     OP - April 12, 2010, 10:33 PM

This should be interesting.  I just found it now and I'm about to watch it.

I'm interested to see how a discussion with a completely non-practising "Muslim" movie megastar in Shahrukh Khan and a dawah idiot like Zakir Naik goes.

Here's part 1.  The rest is on youtube (7 parts in total).

I'll say even before I watch the video, there will always be problems with "stereotyping" in movies.  It is what happens when you don't have the time to create whole personalties for characters so you have to resort to a type of "shorthand" archetypes.  This creates an opportunity for stereotyping because it isn't possible to show every character in full complexity.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

Rationlizer  - i recommned you watching this interesting video - it shows where influential muslims in the largest muslim country in the world stand.

Its not all doom & gloom, and despite these people being muslims, you will find that they pretty much the same as atheists in their understanding of Islam, its problems & how to solve them.

A very refreshing insight for a change -  thnkyu ShahidR

India is the largest Muslim country in the world? I thought that was Indonesia.

Its kind of funny how India is a majority Hindu nation, a constitutionally secular republic, but it still has more Muslims than most Muslim states, despite being partitioned in the name of religion.

Kabir Khan made the best point so far in the 3rd video (2mins into it) that he wishes religion was something that we could all choose when we're 21 and that we're all merely born into our religions.  yes

btw I'm sorry to say but dispite some of the nice things that Shahrukh is saying about Islam, he also admits that he knows very little about Islam at the same time.  Zakir Naik is probably thinking "astaghfirullah" to everything that Shahrukh is saying, especially in regards to the religious upbringing of his kids.

Shahrukh Khan is simply a God conscience individual.  There is hardly any "Muslim-ness" in him though.

I hope he realises that the only reason why he has become such a big movie megastar is dispite Islam.  He wouldn't have become what he has by reading the Quran every day, avoiding music or singing or dancing, praying namaz 5 times a day, segregating himself from the opposite sex (ie all those Bollywood actresses) etc.

It is all because he is living in a majority non-Muslim country and because he had such an irreligous upbringing (which he is very open about).

My dad always used to tell me it was India.  But yes, you might be right and Indonesia might have taken over.

Finished watching it.  And like I said earlier, its was very refreshing.  The debate they had on there was very similar to what we have over here.  Nice to see how nicely India is set up for the new world, and how open minded they are.  So different from my impression of desi's from my dads generation.

Shows how much they have moved on, everywhere other than the Europe.  Perhaps because they hadnt witnessed their own peer group adapt with the times.

There was one guy on the stage who declared his apostacy, that wouldnt happen here let alone a country with a population of 200 or so million muslims.

What I'd like to see Islame is these kinda discussions happening in Pakistan and I'd like to see someone openly declaring their apostasy in countries like Pakistan without any fear of persecution.

Seeing progress in non-Muslim majority countries means very little to me.  I want to see progress in Muslim majority countries.

btw according to Zakir Naik's website he's gonna do a UK tour from 17-27th June this year.  mysmilie_977
If this tour goes ahead then I'd love to interrogate the twat.

ha, he'll be selling out to packed houses across the land! Good luck with interrogating him, it would be like trying to get sense out of a brick wall. And you'd probably be intimidated, harangued, heckled and hounded by the disciples who had come to see their self esteem affirmed if you tried to actually confront him.

He really is one of the biggest morons on earth.

Bollywood actors are probably the least likely to ever be religious. Most actors come from religiously mixed families. It's not uncommon to see Hindus, Muslims, Christians, and Zoroastrians in the same family. Shahrukh Khan is married to a Hindu woman, Salman Khan's mom and brother-in-law are Hindu, and his stepmother is Christian. There are also a huge number of examples like this among Bollywood actors. In My Name Is Khan, Sonya Jehan has a Pakistani Muslim father and a French(?) Catholic mom and is married to a Hindu, and Zarina Wahab is married to a Hindu.

There is also a community in Rajasthan known as the Cheeta Merats who follow a syncretic blend of Hinduism and Islam and follow both Hindu and Muslim festivals. One Tamil Muslim guy in my history class has a Hindu mother and is pretty open minded to religion in general and he also says that he loves crazy religious people because they're so illogical and hilarious  Smiley.
