  • My uncle is an ex-Muslim too !!
     OP - April 21, 2010, 06:45 PM

Yup it turned out he is.  great

I think I have talked about him before. He's been here in the UK since the 70s when he was in his  late teens. He's married to an English lady and his children don't speak a word of Arabic.
Everybody in the family knows he's pretty liberal, drinks and gambles, and doesn't pray or fast. He doesn't give a fuck about religion and he's always been straightforward in his views. But still t I thought he considered himself a Muslim.
His wife is a Christian and believes in God but she doesn't go to church and they didn't baptize their kids.
They're the only ones in my family who know I drink and eat pork. They also know I don't believe in God although I hadn't gone into much details before.

He invited me over for dinner yesterday. He made some lovely chicken and lamb kebabs and his wife made a beautiful prawn salad.

After dinner we started talking about the election then politics in general then Muslims in the UK. His wife was trying her best to be politically correct but after some rum and coke and multiple beers we all got tipsy  grin12 so we started telling it like it is.
We talked about arranged marriages in the UK. My uncle mentioned an 37-year old Arab guy he knows who married an 18-year old girl last year.

So we all slagged him off a bit. Then I couldn't hold it anymore and said "well Mohammed married a 6 year old and consummated the marriage when she was 9 and he's supposed to be best man who ever lived. So we can't blame Muslims if they followed his Sunnah". My remark was followed by 5 seconds of awkward silence which made me regret saying it!
Then my uncle laughed out loudly and said "that's why my friends and I always called him Mohammed the paedo" !!  grin12
I was surprised to be honest. So was his wife. He then when on to say "I don't really think of myself as a Muslim" and his daughter responded "why haven't said this before?"  Cheesy

It was a great moment. It turned out he, his daughter, and his son are all atheists/agnostics but have never told each other about it.  Grin His wife said she believes in a god but that's just about it.

Not only that but he also told me that his circle of friends (which consists of Arab kebab shop owners in their 40s and 50s) are almost all non-believers. Really shocking !! And encouraging of course.

I felt so comfortable and told them about my experience and my beliefs and this forum. I told them that I told my parents and that they were OK with it but that I still think they expect me to marry a Muslim girl at least culturally.....etc

Then we watched Inter destroy Barca until I got so drunk that he had to drive me home in my car while his son followed in his car  Embarrassed

All in all, it was a great dinner. And I just felt like sharing the story with you guys !!

Congratulations, it must be so relaxing for you and for the members of your uncle's family to have it all out now, and know that you are all on the same page!

    2 points to make .

1, great story, Afro I wonder how many more folks could just get over that awkward 5 secs and get to the honesty, there must be thousands who feel like you and your uncle but who dont dare say so yet if they did they may get a few friends and family confiding that they too think its a pile of pooh.

    2. Inter did not destroy Barca, the referee was a cheating bastard  finmad
    thank you

According to the polls only 1.6 % of Americans are athiests. So what gives you the right to call the other 80% morons?'

Yeah I though the same thing too. My cousin commented that it took someone from outside the family to make them comfortable telling each other they're atheists  grin12

It shows you that many people are only religious in name but don't have the confidence to tell exactly how they feel.

I wonder if I have other family members who are closeted non-believers. After last night, I'm inclined to think I do.

Nice story IA, made me go warm inside.  Thats why I think the best position to be is open about who you are, sometimes it does not pay off, but on the whole it works out.  It certainly has for me so far, despite many difficulties.

That is encouraging but what is discouraging is that many of their children in their 20s and 30s are going back to Islam and becoming much more religious than their parents or grandparents ever were.

Awesome story. Nice to hear you have people in your family who share your thoughts.

On a side note, how come they never knew of each other? I mean seriously how could everybody be a freakin infidels and everyone thinks the rest are (I assume cultural) Muslims?

Exactly. Like Hassan previously said these men are from a different generation that seems to have become extinct. They didn't give a fuck about religion and just wanted to enjoy themselves. They valued their culture, career, and family more than religion.

Well my understanding is that he and his wife agreed that they would not raise their kids religiously. They didn't baptize them nor did they circumcise their boy.
I imagine my cousins must have grew up kinda confused. Their mother is a non-practicing Christian and their father is a Muslim in name only.
I don't think they ever considered themselves Muslim to begin with.

    Excellent Story  Afro Afro

Its funny I know a few ex muslims in my family too. They either get too defensive when i raise the Islam issue or just cant find the place and time to talk to them alone.

I've always thought that once a trickle of people "come out", it will become easier and easier in time to do so for other people... Albeit, still no easy thing to do though.  Afro Great news!
