Yep same.
I actually had to stop reading the Quran because it weakened my faith. The verses of graphic torture of my fellow human beings too were completely incongruent with the notion of Allah being merciful.
I remember reading the incredibly bizarre and petty trick that the prophet Joseph played on his brothers, I just shook my head at the passive aggressive behavior of this so called 'prophet of God'.
Researching into the life of Muhammad was shocking. Muslims (and so did I) will try to assign virtuous motives for behavior and proclamations that would earn any other human being the label of a narcissistic megalomaniac.
Slavery, and the sex slave trade (the law in no way prevents - and didn't prevent - muslims from buying and selling women as sex slaves), turned my stomach.
But finding out that the majority position was that Muhammad groomed and abused a child was the first time I experienced serious doubt about Islam. I remember having a panic attack, but consoled myself in 'alternative' interpretations of her age.
The proof lies in the Hadith-collection! I couldnt keep on believing after reading what is considered to be "sahih" (authentic) hadith. Islam became more and more the product of a power-hungry warlord.
Both of these and :
All my life I was told how great Muhammad was, how great Islam is and how nobody left it [ you can be as bad a Muslim as you want, but you will never leave], how 911 was an inside job, etc. I was somebody who justified Muhammad marrying Aisha [ it was part of the times], justified his many wives, justified why women were told to wear a hijab, yada yada yada. Then I joined the student room forum and it has so many intelligent people. I went in fighting for Islam, left an Agnostic. At the same time - the one event that really shattered my faith - I came across an article about sex slaves, concubines and female war prisoners on AskImam and that article made my jaws drop and blew up my mind. The author tried to justify the cruelty but in my mind nothing he said could justify it. I showed it to my mother [the one who told me to read up on Askimam because I had questions] and she then said that you should try some other sources because Askimam might not be authentic. She told me to go to a mullana and then denied the fact that this article was authentic.
So yeah ever since then I started reading up more about Islam and at the same time Evolution [thanks to TSR, I was introduced to this], and stopped believing because of creationism and the stupid/cruel stuff in the Quran.
What really severed the thread though - like completely, were the atheist memes on facebook. They are soo true and they really get you thinking. Plus as a bonus they are funny !
Here is the article, for those who want to take a look:
