    So my head hertz now from looking at pages of pages of television specs, pretending I know what they mean. But there are so many televisions that I have seen in store which if I had just read the specs of it online, I would have thought it was a brilliant tv, but the picture quality in store is horrible. I've read internet articles about just how deceitful specs can be and also not to trust incomplete specs, but I've never come across specs yet that are complete.

    So should I just go to a store and pick out the one that looks the best? But I've been told that is never a good idea because all televisions in a store are fed the same signal so what you would actually be doing is just comparing the signal quality of different stores. Is that right?

    So then I figure, maybe I should just look at online reviews. Again, I've been told that they are unreliable too, because what one person thinks is a good tv, I might think is horrible.

    It's like every single possible way of comparing tv's is unreliable. Can't exactly talk to a sales person because, well they're a sales person!

    So we need some help choosing a tv because it's got to the point where I dunno which to get. If I don't get help here then we either won't buy a tv or when we do buy a tv it will just be a stab in the dark...

    sorry should have really said what we're looking for:

    32 inch
    LCD
    Built-in freeview if possible
    I want that smooth video quality but don't really know what makes video quality smooth. Is it a 100Hz picture frequency? Or is it a 1080p resolution? I've read that neither of those are necessarily what makes video quality smooth. I've read somewhere that it is "anti-judder" that makes it smooth. But I haven't seen "anti-judder" anywhere :s

    All for around £350 if that's possible?

    Full HD is just another way of saying HD Ready 1080p right? It doesn't actually mean that it is HD, I've heard. You still need to buy the cables for it (not sure how expensive they are though). We're mostly going to be using it to watch TV (which is all in SD anyway) and standard DVD's (no blu-ray or anything like that). So I don't think HD is something we especially want.

    The thng is, you will be watching only sd, and most HDTV is broadcast at 720p, but there is no point getting anything less than 1080p, because it is more futureproof, and they are quite cheap now anyway because of led tv. Go to richersounds.com

    So how much are the cables needed to make a HD ready tv start receiving HD signal? Is it just a HDMI cable that's needed?

    Yeah you need hdmi cables, but don't just get the cheapest ones. Decent cables will set you back a few quid as well.

    OK, and what is the difference between response time (measured in milliseconds) and refresh rate (measured in hertz)? I would have thought that they correlated, but I've seen one tv with an 8 millisecond response time and 100Hz refresh rate, yet another tv had 5 millisecond response time and 50Hz refresh rate...

    and does response time and refresh time really matter that much? Just go watch the screens at the store and if it looks nice that should be enough.

    My advice is don't get one. You'll save yourself hours of time wasted in front of the tube.  Smiley

    Fuck that! I got a HDTV and I have zero regrets. Have you shot up Liberty city in all HD 40" of glory and full volume? Didn't think so.

    Well you could try getting a cheap guitar from a pawn shop or something similar? Second hand guitars won't be the best quality obviously but sometimes you can get yourself a bargain.

    I grew up without a TV and was better for it. But we watch movies/regular shows on the PC so it'll just enhance the experience not waste more time. I can't stand sitting infront of the tv for long periods of time Smiley

    Btw, I really hate "tv". As in cable. I only use my tv to play Xbox and watch movies and selected shows. I have no cable or satellite subscription. Waste of time and money.
