Why is it that when a substance gets cold its shape and molecular build changes and yet when it gets hot not only do these changes happen but a totally new entity of fire appears?
    What is fire?

Hmmm this is interesting as my friends and I were just talking about fire, what it is, how it's the only substance of its kind... just the other day when we went to the beach at night and found a well lit firewood log just randomly waiting for us. Good times were had dance

Almost every ancient and not-so-ancient human society worshiped fire at some point. Remnants of fire-worship can be found in modern day practices, religions and languages too.

I've asked myself this question before too. Most definitions of fire state that it is an action or process that is happening to another object. But it looks to me like fire is an object itself...

A "scientific" explanation is most welcome, as are all others.

And yes allat, I also had this thought while around a campfire -  fire is fascinating to watch.

I think you are right James: fire is, I believe, just an accelerated transfer of energy and yet, our experience of it seems to create an entity in-itself, strange indeed.

But it's not a gas, is it? It's usually described as the oxidization of any object capable of reacting with oxygen, I'm guessing.

So it's a reaction that is happening. But to me it looks more like "oxidization" is the reaction and "fire" is a by-product of a reaction, and by-products are objects, and objects are substances, and substances have atoms. Two conflicting beliefs.

It is an oxidation reaction, but the visible flame is gas. Depending on how much oxygen is available and what substance is being burned, you can get a variety of gases. Fire is made of atoms too, and free radicals.

"The flame is the visible portion of the fire and consists of glowing hot gases. If hot enough, the gases may become ionized to produce plasma.[2] Depending on the substances alight, and any impurities outside, the color of the flame and the fire's intensity might vary."

Fire is just the result of heat and oxidisation, nothing mysterious about it.

We know what it is a result of. What we were wondering is what it was. Apparently it actually is a gas or mixture of gasses in itself, very hot gasses.

Why don't you guys read   aunt Wiki.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire

But that is def for chemical fire.,   You also have nuclear fire .. The fire of Sun., or dynamite detonator caps that are often made with metal azides. They don't need O2 to explode.

Shape may change a bit but Molecular build up will not change when you drop something in to liquid helium Z10. Interesting question is this temperature scales. Why is it hotter side we go to millions or more degrees where as colder side we locked up at -273.15 C or 0 kelvin...

I think both Cheetah's and Yeezevee's replies are the typical descriptions of fire that we are educated with at school, but I think the typical description is more like an explanation of when fire occurs, rather than what fire is. That diagram above doesn't tell us anything about what fire is, just what it's a result of.

It does NOT tell us "what fire is"......

interesting point J4m3z.,   words sounds like   "Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle"

HUP  states  that "precise inequalities that certain pairs of physical properties, such as  position and momentum, cannot simultaneously be known to arbitrary precision"

Any way talking about these 'Actions and detection"., in all these things detector is extremely important and one of the best detectors is Brain.  That smart guy Christopher Eppig and his colleagues  pubed a paper in  the Proceedings of the Royal Society. It says
    Quote
The human brain requires a prodigious amount of energy relative to its weight and size. A newborn baby uses 87 per cent of its metabolic energy for the development of its brain; this figure comes down to 44 per cent in a five-year old child. According to the Economist, an adult uses 25 per cent of his metabolic energy on his brain, even though this organ accounts for only two per cent of total body weight.

Log disability-adjusted life years owing to infectious disease and average national IQ correlate. Image credit: Proceedings of the Royal Society B,  Researchers in the US have noted areas of the world with the lowest average intelligence quotient (IQ) also tend to have the highest rates of infectious diseases, and suggest the energy required to fight off the diseases may hinder brain development in children because both are metabolically costly processes.

What a power in that small amount of matter.  Without it., we see neither fire nor its effects..
