     OP - July 28, 2010, 06:44 PM

I know this topic was once discussed. But I want to know what you guys specifically think. Why is the mosque being named "Cordoba"?

Could there be any political motives?

I am a New Yorker. I don't really oppose the building of the Mosque, but I do oppose building of a Mosque named "Cordoba" that is so close to the WTC site.

    Here is a visual Interpretation

A = site of Mosque to be built

    B = Site of WTC

Corduba was the capital city of the Andalusian Caliphate.  You can guess why they chose that name.

    The power of money! vomit
They should have allowed the construction of the mosque at the original site of WTC and made it the tallest building in the world. That would have made it the epitome of American tolerance!

WHO will be drawn to visit it.  And from the sounds of it, a prime platform

I empathize with you J&T. Yes! you need many sites like CEMB in US to at least let people have the complete picture. There are many true life stories that have to be highlighted to counter the nonsense. My impression is that there are quite a few stupid lambs waiting to be devoured by the likes of MRasheed,Abdul Fattah et al.

Maybe it's just me, but I think a lot of people are overreacting. For all you know, this might be a sign of progress. Perhaps some Muslims will realize that America is not the enemy, and that even though 9/11 was caused by Islamic extremists, Muslims are still allowed to practice their rights freely, and America is not waging a war against their religion after all.

Was that ever in doubt? There were mosques prior to 9/11, weren't they? Have you heard the speeches made by the 'founder' of the mosque both in English as well as Arabic? He is a very flexible guy and knows his audience very well!

So was Byzantium if we come to that.  Baghdad was also a center of learning.  Your point is?

Why should they need to build a masjid near a sensitive site to realise that?  Muslims still are allowed to practice freely in spite of 9/11.  The notion of it being built to commemorate the victims is pathetic and a kick in the teeth to the relatives.

with audio clips like "allahu akbar!" wth do you expect, abood?   finmad

Someone here had posted "somewhere" about going to a CAIR symposium
and their "behind the scenes" reaction to  9/11 was mocking/laughing at
non muslim Americans.  (wish i could do a search on threads in here)
Certainly not the public face of sympathy they had portrayed.   finmad

I was a muslim AFTER 9/11, so don't give me any of this "biased" crap
about Islam.  Although, some of the dawagandist TRIED to sell me on the
    "truther" bullshit.

Also abood,  we all know what "opinions" are like, don't we?  You have already
expressed your anti american sentiment openly, so why should I bother even engaging
in debate about what you THINK or dont THINK.

I'm not saying it should be. And it's no use asking why, that's what Muslims think.

With an attitude like this, it's no wonder nothing ever changes between Islam and the West. Each is trying to get the other to understand their viewpoint without having some empathy.

Well let's see, they are allowed to practice their religion freely, they have powerful lobbies sticking up for their rights, they can sue for discrimination, they can apply for jobs and posts that any other American citizen can.  The US stood up for the Bosniacs and Albanians, it gives aid to the Saudis and Pakistan and one of Obama's advisers wears a hijab.  So how is it that they fail to realise that the US is not against them?

Absolute bollocks.  There are limits..  So you are suggesting hurting the relatives of those who died on 9/11 for the sake of appeasing a minority.  Are they privileged?  Would they soon need one in front of the White House as well?  And it somehow negates all that the US did in the past.  It would be as insensitive as building a McDonalds or a Pentecostal church in front of Abu Ghraib.   Why is it that only one side has to make all the effort to tolerate and appease the other?

No one is being physically hurt.

People don't have a constitutional right to build a McDonald's near Abu Ghuraib. Nor do they have a right to build a church there--not that I would have anything against it.

Its not about  the constitution!!  Its about the hundreds of thousands of family
members AFFECTED by the atrocities of 9/11!  Why the hell would they WANT
to build a mosque there?  WHY?  What good does it do?  Its not a memorial,
its a mosque, a koranic shcool, a  cafe, and swimming pool.  How does this
console those (including my BEST FRIEND, whose son was killed in the aftermath)
    who lost so many?  HOW??

So bloody what?  Roll Eyes  I suppose that if I were to go and open a gun shop in front of the Virginia Tech school, no one would be physically hurt either, but I don't think that the relatives of those who died would be pleased.  Especially if I come up with the preposterous idea of doing it to remember the victims.
