  • MPAC Muslimahs on Tesco and Israeli goods...
     OP - November 29, 2010, 11:50 PM

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMAJHZARtlI

So supermarkets sell Israeli goods.  This is nothing new.

How many people object to this?  Did the Muslimahs choose the correct method to protest against this, or did they unnecessarily piss off normal shoppers who are just buying their weekly shopping?

They certainly got a reaction out of one woman (who told them to piss off back to their own country).

According to MPAC's website this idea of supermarket stores getting "MPAC'ed" is about to branch out and they could target a Tesco near you very soon.

Btw, do they have permission to use Rob Dougan - Clubbed To Death in their amateur video? wacko

What does it not being new have to do with anything?

Not me. I don't have a problem with non-violent political activism, protests, and boycotts, especially if I agree with the aims, and I do agree with the aims of the Israeli divestment campaign.  The current Israeli divestment campaign is attempting to emulate the divestment campaign which eventually succeeding ending Apartheid in South Africa.

Any cost-benefit analysis we do solely from the info presented in the video would be purely speculative, so I'm not gonna venture an opinion as to whether this will be tactically effective or not. I will say this however-- a successful boycott will include an active component of protest and inconveniencing those either selling or buying the product under boycott, purely passive refusals to purchase goods are very rarely successful in achieving their aims.

I'd love to question these girls as to who, what, when, where and why Israel is the problem in detail and to explain the logic of their decision, whilst most likely purchasing foods from Coalition countries, some of which fund Israel and even founded it.

In general, I'd like to hear what's wrong with a protest that non-violently applies very little economic pressure to Israel in order to encourage them to reach a settlement with the Palestinians and finally end the damn occupation? A lot of folks here seem to find it objectionable.

I'd love to question these girls as to who, what, when, where and why Israel is the problem in detail and to explain the logic of their decision, whilst most likely purchasing foods from Coalition countries, some of which fund Israel and even founded it.

Whatever, I support the boycott. One can't enforce a boycott on most of the developed world, but a successful boycott of Israel would bring more pressure to bear on Israel to come to a fair settlement-- not much I'll grant ya, but it's better than nothing and it's non-violent.

Non-violent protest of a 40 year foreign military occupation by Israel is stupid to you, and you don't understand how boycotts actually work, organizationally-speaking-- gotcha.  Afro

Because in reality the MPAC types are not interested in seeing the two negotiating a settlement, many of them probably couldn't even point out Israel on the map.  If a Palestinian politician were to come to an agreement, he would be labeled as an apostate for surrendering Islamic land.   As much as fucks like Galloway want peace, what would they prattle about if those two made peace?

I think she actually said that a Palestinian child gets killed every minute  Huh?

Anyway, nice touch at the end when they pass judgment on the store manager who could be Muslim, more or less branding him an Uncle Tom because he asked them to move on.

And why does it matter what this group's particular motives for participating in an international divestment campaign that includes a wide array of groups, including secular organizations, certain progressive synagogues, and even mainline Christian churches in the US and UK are?

To report it to his superiors, and if enough complaints go into corporate about it, it might have an effect on Tesco's purchasing.

    I don't doubt it,
but I do doubt that there was any critical thought process that went into this stunt.
It's absurd to claim that any purchase from Israel indirectly funds the Israeli military, by that standard, anything purchased from a neighboring country indirectly funds Hezbollah.

It's even more absurd to focus on anti-israeli purchases, but not coalition, supporter or founding countries.

It's even more absurd to talk into a random tesco's and complain at a random checkout for 8 minutes...lol

With an absolute lack of thought process like that, I have even less expectancy that they actually KNOW what they're really protesting.

Would have been hilarious if someone at Tesco's actually demonstrated and interest and asked them about their ideal goals in the matter...blank faces all around I imagine.

Because the enemy of your enemy is not necessarily your friend.   There are those who genuinely wish to see peace and stability in the region and there are those who pretend to stand up for one side when in reality they only wish to project their interests on their cause and their motivation comes from an even greater hatred of the other side..

I suppose groups like the SSNP for one truly have the interests of the Palestinians at heart when they take part in demonstrations.  The fact that they wish to incorporate their land in their vision of a Greater Syria and the fact that they also killed Palestinians in the past was not mentioned when they were greeting the participants of the flotilla charade

This won't do anything, its just a publicity stunt which failed miserably. Why did they not write to the manager to complain or stand outside of the shop saying what they wanted to say to everyone with examples of the food that was Israeli. Boycotting means not buying the goods really.

Whatever-- when I see a protest or picket line or a boycott I don't think of what every single person there is thinking of, I concentrate on what the goals of the action are. I support the goals of this protest, and this is only one group among many (including secularists, Christians and Jews) performing one action among many in the broader Israeli divestment campaign. The tactical effectiveness of this particular protest is debatable, but it doesn't immediately strike me as stupid as it seems to for you and others here.

What I see is a bunch of people needlessly getting their panties in a bunch over a video of a few hijabis non-violently protesting Israel.
