    Can we take it easy with insulting God? We should be respectful towards other people's beliefs as we claim to be.
    I'm open for debate (of why we should re-/embrace Islam), but I will no longer participate in this forum. Message me if you need anything. Good luck and may you all find your way... again...

    I'm not pissed!  Tongue I think there are a fair amount of people here who think God doesn't exist, and so to say "don't insult God" to them is rather like saying don't insult the flying purple people-eater. Nothing to insult really because the being in question doesn't exist!

    And as for the respecting of others' beliefs, no one signed an oath to that affect when they joined up here. Respect has a variety of meanings, and few ex-Muslims I imagine can say they respect something they believe to be a outrageous and destructive fraud against humanity. Can I get an amen?

    Having said that, I think we should be cognizant of the fact that Muslims peruse these discussions and wanton attacks are not constructive to allowing them to recognize Islam for what it is. However, we can't confuse critical discussion of things like the sanctioning of rape, murder, torture, stealing, slavery (and the list goes on!) within Islam to disrespecting people's beliefs.

    Respect is a privilege to be earned, not a right to be demanded.  Where reason is abandoned, a belief deserves no respect.

    As for one being "insulted" or "offended" by words, I suggest that one grows a spine and moves on.  Sticks and stones...

    Hence the "move on" i.e. the "insulted" or "offended" party have no right to silence whatever offended them.  In other words, do something more productive than just proclaiming how offended you are and expecting anything useful to follow it.

    I'm new here and without wishes either way. Just 2 cents, if that's all right:
    I can certainly understand luftazure's reasons, the topics are very sensitive and admittedly sometimes degenerate.
    However, luftazure, I'd point out that sensitivities are high on all sides, not only one, and there isn't really a way around that. There just isn't.
    I admit I might not be happy with every single post I read towards others' religious/spiritual beliefs, but on the other hand, some of the effects of institutionalized religion on people is outrageous and I'm not surprised people need to speak up without gloves.

    I don't see a better way to handle it, there is a certain level of moderation from the staff that I can see, and I don't think it can be much more than that.

    newsoul: actually there is an agreement at registration on the forum. Not an "oath" but an agreement nonetheless, which states pretty much something like: there will be passionate discussions, and there will be attacks, though there are limits - repeated personal unwarranted attacks will be moderated. (or so I remember it, not sure I read everything  whistling2)

    just because you dont follow that religion doesnt give you the right to go insulting it

    i dont see why people have to say such harsh words, you dont follow the religion then khalas leave it as that

    I'm happy to respect respectable beliefs. The Abrahamic religions are not one of them.

    What would an insult to a god comprise of anyway, in your opinion?

    Hmm, maybe so. I don't remember seeing that. But we're not talking about personal attacks between members, but on Islam itself.

    The harshness comes from the realization of what Islam has done to each of us and continues to do to millions around the world. Some speak from anger, or bitterness, or simply a crusader spirit when armed with that knowledge. Once the enormity of it sinks in, it is hard to keep quiet or placcidly nod politely in the face of Islam.

    How would one go about insulting Islam? Say the claims of its scripture are wrong - scientifically, historically, morally wrong? Say its holy laws and system of life is full of criminal and hideous human rights abuses? Say its prophet was a warmongering sex fiend? Reject the assertion that Islam should be dominant, that its unworthy of that? How?

    First of all I harbor, to say the least, strong doubts as to whether a god exists. So it is difficult to "insult" a non-existent being. Even if there is some kind of omnipotent creator deity it is clearly not the jealous, murderous, demented psycho who is speaking through the bible and Koran. I personally am not on a mission to insult peoples' religious beliefs - it would be a complete waste of my life for a start. If people want to believe I am going to burn in hell for not sharing their stupid beliefs and even say so verbally or in writing then let them. However, when people start DEMANDING  "respect" for their absurd doctrines WITH MENACES and threaten to and actually KILL people who do not display this "respect"  then the gloves are off as far as I am concerned.     Islam, and aspects of other religions, is a monument to insult. I'm not talking about insulting ones intelligence, though of course there is that. I'm talking about naked, vitriolic demonising and insulting, of non believers, of women, of dissenters, of other belief systems.

    Islam (and other religions) are immensely offensive, judgmental and intemperate, and yet they seek for themselves special priveliges to not be 'insulted' themselves.

    And you know, I'm not generally one to go around saying 'Fuck Allah and Mohammad', because its just a throwaway epithet. But believers get offended just by you criticising even in the most temperate and polite language possible aspects of their religion.

    Hell, Islam is riddled with death taboos and invocations to MURDER those who criticise Mo and those who reject and criticise Islam.

    And yet the onus on not offending rests with us?

    Fuck that.

    I insult Allah, not the Supreme Being. The deity of the Quran sounds like a roaming desert crawler. Do not annoy me by telling me to not insult Allah. Allah's greatness, glory, majesty and excellency crumbles by insults. Let the devil die at last.

    Not necessily otherwise we would never achieve change.  Thats why freedom of speech was such a great idea.

    Does your argument hold with those who believe in Nazism, white supremacy etc  If some interpret Nazism in a peaceful way, does that give Nazism free reign?

    Why should those of us who believe Islam, after reading the Quran, to be a largely imperialistic, tyrannical, chauvenistic, and racist ideology be made to keep quiet?

    I was talking about something similar with a Christian friend the other night. She claimed that I respected her beliefs (I tend not to chew toy this one much) and I said "No. I respect your right to have those beliefs. That's different."

    It does to me since it's my personal expectation that people will not take my post lightly. If we keep that up (the insults), many muslims that visit this sight will turn back before reading any further. It's a bad image. Do I make sense now?
