hi everyone. just stopping in to say hi.

a bit of background on me btw. I'm a girl, since the username doesn't really make that clear, I'm arab, and I'm an 18 year old in college. also, I'm basically an ex-muslim, though I'm only "out" to a couple of college friends. the situation is complicated by the fact that most of my friends are also my brother's friends, and he is quite firmly muslim. so I'm only out with a few friends I can trust not to let slip to him. so for now, I wear hijab. I also just got back from the RIS convention in toronto, which was just awkward.

so far in the closet (religion wise) that I can see narnia from here.

I've been basically having doubts for a year or two, but just sort of put them out of my mind. until during ramadan one day someone asked me why I was fasting, and I honestly couldn't think of a good answer. thats when I started really doubting. then I got into a fight with my parents over them being controlling and what my major would be, which somehow turned into a fight about how I feel like most of the muslim women we know don't have their own identity. they are someone else's mother, or wife, or daughter, or sister, and I said I didn't want that to be me, and my father's response was something along the lines of "if you want to marry someone who will be submissive to you, don't hold your breath, because I wouldn't allow you to marry someone who isn't going to be in charge. a good husband will discuss decisions with you, but in the end he can decide things without your agreement." and then he tried to support this using islam, which instead of forcing me to agree with him like he intended, just made me give up on islam once and for all.

    First off welcome  parrot

Trust me, you wouldn't be the first or last young lady to want to make her own decisions. There are many famous and powerful women out there who answer to no one and they can do things just as well if not better than some guys :p I don't need some thousand year old book to prove my claim, since it's actually happening. However this whole gender thing is stupid, it simply boils down to one's own abilities. You are your own person, with your own brain, your own independent thinking, and the sky is limit.

    welcome mhk18 !!

what does the "mhk" stand for in your name ?

I know about the RIS conference. Honestly its non-sense. Hyped up "scholars" come and talk about issues they have no idea about. Just because they went to Al-Azhar or some other islamic school the stupid north american muslim community flocks to listen to them. Sharia lovers, homophobes, misogynists they all come to "Revive" the islmaic spirit.

Hello MHK18!! Welcome to the forum and congrats on your apostasy Smiley How did you find the forum? Had you heard of the CEMB whilst you were still a Muslim, and did you have much awareness of ex-Muslims before you realised Islam wasn't true? There seem to be quite a few Canadian Ex-Muslims on this forum.....maybe there's something in the water over there that snaps people out of it Wink

well, I found CEMB through a google search after i left islam. and I'm actually not canadian, I just visit there a couple of times a year with my family. every time I go there I see a lot of really devout looking muslims, so I doubt theres anything in the water unfortunately lol. and I never really met an ex-muslim before I got to college, and even then he isn't really an ex-muslim, his parents are, and their family was never really religious anyway.

Welcome! I hope you enjoy this Forum as much as I have so far. The people here are kind, open-minded, and intelligent (with the exception of a few trolls.) I'm assuming you haven't told your parents yet, wait till your on your own, then let them know of your opinions. The thing I don't like about our Arab culture is that the children and women are always regarded as possessions. Matriarchal Societies are awesome. :/. As a guy I would much rather coexist with my spouse then order them around.

Question: By renouncing your religion, do any of you renounce your culture and heritage as well?

    Welcome Mhk18!

I certainly do not renounce my heritage. I think that is exactly what makes a rational human being rational. He understands the fundamental difference between good or bad ideas, without invoking any emotional attachment to them. And by the way, welcome yourself Wink
