Time since last cigarette: 21 hours

I feel guilty about coming back to my son after smoking. This is actually the second time I’ve tried to give up this week. The first lasted 15 hours. I then caved in and bought a 10 pack, with the plan of just smoking when I really, really needed it. But once reunited with my beloved cigs, I ended up smoking six in the space of about three hours. Utter fail.

    Anyways, I am dying

Go for it lad . You seem to be approaching the required level of self-disgust to quit successfully.  Don't try not to - you'll crave nicotine even more.  This week smoke and smoke again until you're utterly sick of it. Next week go down a nicotine level and do the same again. See what happens.

You can only stop smoking if you really, really want to.  Wanting to stop because of feeling guilty never works.  wacko

    Good luck, Musivore Afro

I'm at an age now where I must give up or it will either cause a horrible death or seriously cut my life short.

Shame that life sucks so much that I don't really care.

Such negativity! Smoking has been shown to cause a mild (possible) improvement in memory function. A very helpful side effect I'm sure you'll agree; makes it much less likely you'll forget your next chemotherapy session Smiley.

Sometimes it does. My kids were small the first time I gave up for 8 years and they used to leave little notes under my pillow asking me to give it up for their sakes. I felt really, really guilty about it.
I figured that if I could do that I was also teaching them that you can do anything you want if you set your mind to it. Sometimes a little pressure goes a long way, whether internal or external, it's all a means to an end.

Thanks for your advice and support guys. I am really struggling. The hunger in my mind for a cig is spreading so much that there is very little space left in my head for any other thoughts. I am very close to having sexual fantasies about a sexy cig, dressed in an equally sexy bra. It would have to be lit of course. I'm not a pervert, I don't get turned on by unlit cigs...

Maya - I remember you from my first stay at cemb, months ago. It's good to hear from you again... You don't seem as active anymore? Anyways, I think I agree with Mr Lumus. I have lasted 24 hours of hell already because I know that I am passing on dangerous fumes to my gorgeous baby, every time I pick him up. Besides, he's getting to the age where he imitates everything I do, so that is motivation enough for me. I hope so badly that I don't cave in this time.

Quitting cold turkey is a very hard thing to do.
Maybe you should try to allow yourself to smoke, but a limited number of cigarettes.
Convince yourself it tastes better (which it does imo) after eating for example. This way you have something to look forward to and can push yourself to delay smoking when you crave it.

Then, after a few weeks, try to skip smoking after some of the meals and repeat over the next weeks.
    Hope this helps..
I'll have to quit next year once I'll move in with my girlfriend, but that's still some months away so no stress for me for now Tongue

Thanks mate. I don't think I can take much more. It's just a question of getting to a shop now.

I did cut down to three or four per day before trying this. But this last stage is a fucking nightmare. The urge for just one more comes in waves, separated by about an hour of calm. Each wave is more intense than the last. Shouldn't the tide be fackin going out, not coming in by now? Either way, I lose. Again.

During the week whilst at work, I use to smoke 1 every hour, for the past 2 weeks or so, I now smoke one every 2 hours or so, weekends are entirely different though, it is easier to quit when you at work, but you have motivation, which is your son and I take it your wife does not smoke as well - keep going at it, try and start with the first cig in the morning, that is the hardest to give up in my experience and the last one before you go to sleep. Well once again good luck  Afro

Cheers mate. Reading your encouragement makes me want to continue the fight. Where I am going wrong is knowing that the reward for holding out for so long will be a nice juicy pack of cigs..its just a case of when I'm going to give myself that reward. I know I'm losing this fight.

Time since last cigarette: 32 hours

When I created this thread, I was chuckling because I knew I'd post again very soon saying 'time since last cig: 5 mins'. Then I could try to laugh that off, and say that I accept defeat and that nicotine is a bigger man than I am. But to my great surprise, I'm still standing. It's bloody hard, but I've proven to myself that there is some hope of escape.

Now, if only I could find a cig to celebrate the fact that I've had such a good day at quitting.. Mmmmm

Well yes I suppose so if you can count 8 years as "it worked".  You did start again though?  Of course you can do anything you want if you set your mind to it, that's what I mean by you have to really, really want it to work before it will work.

Thanks for your advice and support guys. I am really struggling. The hunger in my mind for a cig is spreading so much that there is very little space left in my head for any other thoughts. Ah musivore, yes indeed I remember who you are now, we conversed about circumcision (your son and my grandson).  Good to hear from you too.  far away hug

I assume your son recovered fully from the dreaded deed, I myself am in much debate with my daughter about it as the time gets nearer for his father wanting it to go ahead imminently.  wacko

I know exactly how you feel about passing on obnoxious fumes to your baby.  I feel the same and whenever my grandson is in the car I never light up, nor when he's in the same room.  I know I don't want to give up the smoking and that they'll probably end up the death of me, but I just figure it's the price I'll have to pay if that happens.

Not smoking around kids, in the car when others are present, on aeroplanes (because it's not allowed), in restaurants (because it's not allowed) or any public buildings is so much easier when I know I can go outdoors and have one, or after the plane lands I can go and have one after the other until I'm "topped up" again, lol, makes it all bearable.  yes

I really do feel that if you want to do it you will do it,  if you're doing it for others it rarely works (note I changed that from "never works" lol).   I say good luck to you if that's what you really want but if it is isn't and you succumb then if you can at least not smoke around your son and others who hate it, just the knowing that you can have one soon, or in a few hours, days or whatever, really will stop you obsessing about wanting one so much.  Afro

Hey Maya, thanks for asking after my son. He's 18 months and is turning out to be a real terror. He's crazy. He's violent. He hates me. He bites me often. He has 100% taken after his dear mother...

Anyways, he has recovered ok. If I'm honest, he cried a fair but in the first day it was done, then just got on with things like normal. Obviously, we had to be careful about bathing and nappying habits for about a week, but circumcision, if done right, is not always the great ordeal that it is often portrayed at. I'm not advocating that it should be done, only that if your grandson does go through with it, try not to worry too much. Btw, if it happens, will it be in the Arab country that I remember your daughter moving to, or will it be in the West?

I really really have no clue about why smoking cessation is such a painfully difficult process. I mean; smoking is just a dirty, unhealthy, drug addiction, and the moment one realizes what smoking really is and does, stopping this should be really easy, right?

One time I (tried to) begin smoking,- just to show people that stopping smoking was really easy. However, the moment I inhaled my first puff I nearly fainted. Spread out over a few days I did manage to smoke a few cigs, but the taste was so terribly bad I still don't understand how people continue poisoning themselves with the new-world addiction.

I shouldn't be here. Really. Shaytan SWT deluded ALL of us. Amen.

    LOL @  nearly fainting....

It's hard to explain the attraction to a non-smoker, or to someone who nearly fainted when trying it. But trust me, the appeal is very strong, the habit of smoking itself is tough enough to break, and nicotine is a very addictive drug...

If you were trying to help me by putting me off cigs, I thank you for your efforts mate. But, I would give my right arm for a cig right now, so believe me, there is definitely something about the habit that grabs you by the balls, squeezes, and refuses to ever let you go.

LOL I'm a lifelong smoker and after a 13 hour non-smoking flight to Bangkok I headed for the first fog-filled small glass box for smokers I could find at the airport and that first ciggie went straight to my head (it was either that or inhaling other stuff that others were smoking) and I nearly passed out myself.  I couldn't walk straight after coming out of that room.  Cheesy  Soon wears off though.  whistling2

I'm glad to hear your son was ok musivore.  Afro  My son-in-law wants it done in Tunisia without any anaesthetic or anything  Cry  finmad  but I'm adamant he will have it done here, privately if necessary. I'm accompanying my daughter over there next week and I don't know or care how but I'll do whatever it takes to prevent it happening that way.  Plus they arrange a damn celebration party affair over there for the event.  wacko

I hope your son-in-law sees sense. I can only vouch for the UK, and the op is nearly always just a formality here. Either way, I wish you and the little one the best of wishes on this.

I don't want any of your statistics; I took your whole batch and lit my pipe with it. I hate your kind of people. You are always ciphering out how much a man's health is injured, and how much his intellect is impaired, and how many pitiful dollars and cents he wastes in the course of ninety-two years' indulgence in the fatal practice of smoking; and in the equally fatal practice of drinking coffee; and in taking a glass of wine at dinner, etc. etc. And you are always figuring out how many women have been burned to death because of the dangerous fashion of wearing burqas, etc. etc. You never see more than one side of the question.

    Quote
You are blind to the fact that most old men in America smoke and drink coffee although according to your theory, they ought to have died young; and that ripe old Englishmen drink wine and survive it, and portly old Dutchmen both drink and smoke freely, and yet grow older and fatter all the time.

And you never try to find out how much solid comfort, relaxation, and enjoyment a man derives from smoking in the course of a lifetime (which is worth ten times the money he would save by letting it alone), nor the appalling aggregate of happiness lost in a lifetime by your kind of people from not smoking. Of course you can save money by denying yourself all those little vicious enjoyments for fifty years; but then what can you do with it? What use can you put it to?

Money can't save your microscopic soul. All the use that money can be put to is to purchase comfort and enjoyment in this life; therefore, as you are an enemy to comfort and enjoyment where is the use of accumulating cash?

It won't do for you to say that you can use it to better purpose in furnishing a good table, and in charities, and in supporting fitness clubs, because you know yourself that you people who have no petty vices are never known to give away a cent, and that you stint yourselves in the matter of food that you are always feeble and hungry.

    Quote
And you never dare to laugh in the daytime for fear some poor wretch, seeing you in a good humor, will try to borrow a dollar of you; and in the mosque you are always down on your knees, with your ears buried in the ground when the contribution-box comes around; and you never give the revenue officers a full statement of your income.

Now you know all these things yourself, don't you? Very well then, what is the use of your stringing out your miserable lives to a lean and withered old age? What is the use of your saving money that is so utterly worthless to you? In a word, why don't you go off somewhere and die, and not be always trying to seduce people into becoming as ornery and unlovable as you are yourselves, by your tiresome "moral statistics"?

Now, I don't approve of dissipation and I don't indulge in it either; but I haven't a particle of confidence in a man who has no redeeming petty vices. And so I don't want to hear from you any more. I think you are the very same man who read me a long lecture last week about the degrading vice of smoking cigars, and then came back, in my absence, with your reprehensible fire-proof gloves on, and carried off my beautiful parlor stove.

Taste has nothing to do with the addiction, it's the nicotine.
Besides, only the first ones taste bad. After a while, it tastes actually pretty good, especially after beers or greasy food (heaven).

Time since last cigarette: 3 full fuking days

I give up. Straight after I post this, I am going to take a walk to the shop. I am going to buy a pack and I am going to stand outside the shop, and I am going to experience a piece of fucking heaven. I am going to orgasm at the instance when the flame touches the cig, and the smoke simultaneously touches the back of my throat from the deep breath that I will take. I will then look up to the sky, exhale, and praise Allah for putting me on this beautiful Earth. I will then finally understand what the Mullah’s have been telling me all along, about the fact that Allah put me on this Earth for the sole purpose of praising him. At that particular moment, Allah will indeed be worthy of all the praise that I will be exhaling in his direction,

I can’t believe I took the time out to type this. I should be sprinting instead to the shop right now.
