I remember being very happy and being very proud of myself. And I was definitely buzzing for a bit. It feels strange to say this, but I remember thinking, 'now I am complete again.'

But, once I got back to the office, feeling of guilt and disappointment kicked in and took over from the buzz. However, now that I’ve had time to reflect, I think I agree with your advice: I’ll continue to fight against the drug, but won’t be too harsh on myself when I occasionally succumb.

That's the best way to be, no use beating yourself up about it.   I've tried and failed so many times myself I find this the best compromise. Good luck.  Afro

Firing up this thread in the hopes I can manage it.  Cheesy

I'm going to try an electric cigarette (sp?) as the way to do it.  Met some woman yesterday who showed me hers and told me it made all the difference to her because its the fiddling with a smoke that she misses the most, but with the electric one she can still pick it up when the urge is there, take a few puffs (it has nicotine) and then put it back down and it switches off until she needs it again.

I think it might help with that "OMG I just need one more smoke" feeling that usually overwhelms me when I have used the patches, or lozenges (I hate gum).

I'm going to buy one on Monday, and start when I feel ready.  I'm thinking a few weeks into uni when I am a bit more relaxed and used to the amount of people etc.

My kids really want me to stop smoking, and the only thing I have really shown them is that I am weak willed at the end of the day.

The nurse I saw yesterday (before the other lady) said that the inhaling and exhaling is also a calming trigger, so she recommended going electric and weaning off that way by reducing the nicotine in the electric fag slowly.

Sounds worth a try to me.

Has anyone here used this method to quit?

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

No,I never did, but its been a week i have stopped smoking cigarrate since i went out of the city. What helped me was that i went to a place where cigarrates arent available.

I still have that urged of smoking one stick but then i think to myself that if i do that,am back to square one.i have been smoking for a year though until last week.

always thought about using the e-cig to quit but haven't got around to getting myself one, as patches and others things arent
    of any worth tbh.

I might just have to try cold turkey again and see if I an actually last this time, if that doesn't work out (probably wont) I shall have to go for the e-cig route

Mmmm... not a bad idea. A friend of mine used an electric cig about a year ago after some 20 years of smoking. After 2 months she quit completely, and she is still smoke-free now, so your chances are not bad  dance

Bummer, all the more reason why i need to stop then before its too late.

One thing i hate about cigarrate is that you dont feel anything unlike Kaya, sure it can make you be calm but ciggarates is very addictive like you stated, there are many times i wake up in the morning and remind myself not to smoke again before i know it, i would see myself lighting a ciggarate in 30mins or hour, it reached to the point that i stopped telling people that i want to stop and remain apathetic to my habits. I heard that its more harmful than Kaya healthwise.

The gum really helped my husband quit the fags. He hasn't smoked now for 10 years, but he's still chewing the gum and has become totally addicted to that instead lol. I suppose at least he's not getting all the other nasty chemicals that are in cigarettes.
Does anybody know if there are any risks associated with chewing the gum long term?

I'd like to ask the smokers a few questions: why did you start, how old were you at the time, and were you aware of the risks? As someone who decided from a very young age that I'd never touch the stuff, I'm genuinely fascinated by how people voluntarily develop such a habit.

shisha is a good alternative since it has less amount of nicotine and the only way u can really get that nicotine if u inhale it all.
and it is real smoke too ! :p

I dont know about that shisha, its not that i dont like it but i only smoke it occasionally.its best that way for me. I used to smoke shisha  regularly and i had a bad reaction to it. Maybe its the wrong flavour or the wood, i dunno or limited flavours that are available over here.

I've heard and read that shisha has 50x the amount of nicotine as a regular smoke, infact its a huge myth that shisha is a better alternative.  http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hookah/AN01265  Plus I can't walk down the road doing shisha without looking stupid.  Grin

I was 14, and no not really, I had heard of the health risks but like most risks in life, it never really means a thing until you have to deal with it, or someone in your family experiences it.  Most smokers fear the health risks, but never really think it will happen to them because there are many people who smoke and reach 80 with no major ill effects.  My grandad in morocco was 83 (I think) when he died and he had smoked since he was a child.

Thats like saying I won't fly because the plane might crash, or have unproctected sex with my loved one (you know cos thats how you have to do it to make babies) because there is a risk of std's entering even a long term relationship via an unfaithful partner, or that I won't drive because so many people die from accidents.

So no, knowing the risks meant nothing, plus I was 14 and my sister gave me one and from there I just sort of did it until it went from just a thing we did to stick our fingers up at Islam and our parents, into an actual addiction.

I dont want my name to be associated with the obvious one like KT, if you search for the word "Cocaine" in this forum.

So you managed to compartmentalise the risk - most of the smokers I've spoken to do the same; I guess it's understandable in a way.

Thats like saying I won't fly because the plane might crash, or have unproctected sex with my loved one (you know cos thats how you have to do it to make babies) because there is a risk of std's entering even a long term relationship via an unfaithful partner, or that I won't drive because so many people die from accidents.

I can't let you get away with that analogy. Driving, flying and sex all have tangible benefits, but can you really argue the same for cigarettes?

So no, knowing the risks meant nothing, plus I was 14 and my sister gave me one and from there I just sort of did it until it went from just a thing we did to stick our fingers up at Islam and our parents, into an actual addiction.

So it was just a desire to rebel? I have to say I'm a little shocked that your sister encouraged you to smoke - how old was she back then? I have an older brother who smokes, and he'd have kicked my ass if he ever caught me with a cigarette.

I can't let you get away with that analogy.

I would say that not only is driving dangerous to us, but to the environment too, same as flying.  The only benefit is the A to B, and with a smoker the benefit is A to my lips, to inhale and exhale something that may or may not kill me in the long run cos I could die some other way.

Has it benefited me in any way?  not really, but I do a lot of things that don't benefit me.  Aside from a feel good factor, for instance charity.  The benefit to me is that i feel good, that is all.  I get the same benefit when I smoke.  It makes me feel good.  Its not just about the nicotine.  There is a calming effect to the inhale and exhale motions, much like meditation and breathing exercises.  (which is why I'm interested in the electric version as a means to an end).

When it comes to sex, the only benefit is an orgasm, or procreation if that is what you desire.  If you were in a committed relationship for instance, you can not guarantee that your partner won't cheat on you, unprotected and bring back a nasty surprise.  Let's say she is using birth control, you guys don't always ride the rubber way.  Why?  there is a risk, so wouldn't it be safer to your health to always use a condom, and when it came time to make a baby, to both get retested and then take the rubber off, or opt for artificial insemination as a cleaner, safer method with no std risk?

Would you go to all of that trouble to make sure you run no risk?  the only benefit is more sensation, but you can still have sex and have pleasure with a rubber.  The only benefit is the level of feel good, which again i get when I smoke.

Don't get me wrong, I understand where you are coming from.  I wouldn't be on a quit thread talking about methods of quitting if I didn't agree somewhat, but you I'm just showing that for me, in my mind, I always felt justified as a smoker.

    Quote

My dad was a smoker, and he was a hypocrite.  Not a hypocrite that his kids couldn't smoke, but he always said WOMEN couldn't smoke.

That was the rebellion (I didn't live at home though), the doing everything my dad said a man could do no matter how stupid, just because I refused to be told being a female meant I couldn't.

Also, my sis was 16, I was 14.  I wouldn't smack my younger siblings for smoking.  My attitude is its their choice, I wouldn't dominate another just because I felt I had the right to make their choices for them.

    My stop smoking plan:

    1. Lose weight

    2. Set date, schedule 3 weeks vacation

    3. Get prescription for Valium and Chantix from my doc

    4. Hike out far, far into woods to secluded cabin.

    5. Pop Valium like candy and detox for 3 weeks

    6. Done

i reaaally regret throwing away that pack right this minute...but the reason i throw away half a pack when i want to stop is because it will stop me spending another few quid for ''just one last pack'' all the time  - it's just my way of making myself feel too guilty to buy another pack. anyway all this talk is making me wanna jump in the car and drive to teh local 24 hour petrol station.  Angry
