  • Getting dirty looks from muslims for not dressing modestly...
     OP - June 22, 2011, 05:23 PM

Since getting my freedom, I dress however I like. Usually it's not very modest and I prefer it that way. Also I can do whatever I like with my hair and have dyed it a pinky red colour. Due to these reasons I can get some odd looks from other Asians who are not afforded the same freedoms as I am.

Sometimes I get dirty looks from other Asians. Other times old (Asian) women just nod they're heads as they walk past me. It doesn't happen very often as I don't live in a very Asian area but enough to be noticeable. It doesn't bother me much, I find it quite amusing usually. Makes me feel like a rebel! Punk Asians around my area are usually from backwards Pakistani backgrounds, so I can understand how they may find me 'unusual'. Though quite a few have probably labelled me as a slut as I like wearing revealing clothes, plus I have freedom so must be a slut (and I probably am by their standards).

I was wondering how you guys get treated for dressing differently? And those ex-muslim here from a non-Pakistani background, what are your roots and how do they treat you if you dress like a Westerner? Is it as bad as how Pakistanis are?

This is the women's subforum, but if any men have similar experiences they feel free to share. I know men generally get it easier when it comes to clothing.

A few weeks ago I was perving on watching a girl who for some reason really intrigued me. It took me a while to realise that it was because it was probably the first time I'd seen a Desi girl showing her legs off outside in Bradford. She was duly howled at by a couple of teenage Desi boys, because obviously dressing like that means she's free meat. Roll Eyes

Being heavy chested meant no matter what I wore it was unacceptable by my parents, and well I had to always leave the house with a big black blanket sized scarf around my lovely boobs. Which I would obviously take off as soon as I was out of sight. rofl

But that was when I was an apologetic muslim, since i've left the suffocating ropes of religion, I wear what I want, although this is still limited due to my parents unacceptable standards, that include anything that outlines the shape of my body banghead yes I'm serious they're that strict, it's just their bad luck that we (me and my sister) don't follow each and every laughable rule they have, past down from my granparents.

If we were still to be living under my grandparents ideals, I probably wouldn't even be alive, or here typing on a notebook; as my gran forbids haircuts, eyebrow making, make up, hairstyles, western clothes, speaking english in the household, watching english programmes,  making friends, having mobiles, having money, talking on the phone, bringing friends home .. I think you get the vastness of madness i've spent my childhood in. She always hated the way I dressed, as i'm a girl of dresses and leggings, or skinny jeans and fitted tops (how unnatural eh?) wacko So yeah she always frowned upon my clothes, and well now she's just tired of telling me to wear more modest and decent clothes, although now it's pretty futile seeing as I ain't even a fucking muslim. yay

I wore a lovely grey netted strappy summer dress with tinted tights today. Afro

My mum contained her anger very well! Insert evil laugh

Yes. It doesn't even have to be anything super immodest. It can just be slightly tight jeans and an off-shoulder shirt... but the point is that the clothes look "too western" or something. Like my style is not Arab enough for them or something stupid and undefinable like that.  Roll Eyes

I think they might be jealous they don't allow themselves the same freedoms.

I think they just don't like me and my attitude and think I'm too "American."

    I think I don't give a fuck.

Rather be forgotten than remembered for giving in.

2 things I have noticed about Indian girls that show legs/wear minishorts.

    1) they either expect me to look at them (and when I do - in my head I'm like "oh what the hell, alright what do you want?" - they smile and feel very satisfied with themselves, you know that shy "uh he looked at me" smile and they do it with their eyes turned away usually downwards while brushing hair behind the ear or a smile that just signals "I like you and I am pleased with you liking me too")

    2) if they are pretty and they know it, and they feel good about their prettyness in otherwords stuck up, they will keep glancing towards me to see if I am looking at them. If I did then the reaction would be

#1- no reaction (these are the ones who think they are of high standards and are often looked at by guys and have guys advancing towards them, and may want me to play hard to get them, or they have no interest in me, I think the former because I consider myself good looking for South Asian standards - I have Desi girls hitting on me all the time and I'm not bragging here, it in no way helps me with my confidence or self-esteem whatsoever, I'm saying this for conversation's sakes and also I don't really care and most importantly I'm not an asshole. If I'm an asshole at times, its simply because I'm just being an asshole, nothing to do what I think about myself. And that can be changed. You have to pardon my assholeness because I tend to be unaware of my assholeness when I'm being an asshole. It's natural. Just like gay guys can be queens and bitchy, masculine heterosexual men such as myself tend to be assholes at times without even knowing it. That's what testosterone does. You can't exactly blame me for that. There's also a difference between being a jerk and an asshole. I know that I'm a good guy, I am very loyal to good people and my friends.)

if I didn't look back at such girls, they would get upset or curious

#2- pretend like as if it didn't matter that I looked at them by immediately looking away or doing something like as if they had intended to it

#3- do the "flip the hair sideways" thing and turn head sideways or look upwards. this is a reaction that affirms that they aware of you looking at them and that they registered it yet it is negative. These are simply bitches. they have a problem, not me, and its their attitude. They are good looking and they know it, and they feed off men looking at them, way too many men have looked at them. this reaction can happen while the girl's expectation can be the same as that of #1 (that is she may want me to make advances)

this is not to be confused with the "flip hair sideways and make a 'hmpf' face" thing that women with low confidence make when you simply happen to meet eyes with them or try to speak to them very casually/normally.

There are many reasons why a girl, especially a desi girl may wear minishorts/skirts/revealing clothing in public. It can be to gain attention. And by this it can either be that she wants to be a little more flaunting or even sultry. It can be that she thinks she's unattractive and therefore by showing skin appear more attractive. It can be that it doesn't matter and that its a norm in the culture, such as America.

I wish to recount an incident. I was waiting for the train, and I happened to catch this tall, athletic, lean, tanned and very pretty Indian-Chinese mixed girl. And, by the way that she looked at me, I could tell that she was attracted towards me.

After the train arrived and we boarded it. We sat facing each other but quite far apart and not right opposite. The train was crowded. As she was wearing track shorts, her legs were showing off well, I thought I could get away with ogling at her legs like a piece of meat, as there were people standing infront of me blocking me from her sight. Then afterwhile, she stood up and moved away, got all the way inside to another train compartment, so far that she was completely hidden from sight, and this was a crowded train mind you, so its not easy walking inside it. Which means that she caught me being rather creepy. And this really opened me to the psychology of women. That women might like you but if you even strongly show them that you want to get into the sex-mode with them, it totally puts them off. Needless to say, I felt ashamed and like a dick. I just felt sunken to my seat and kept hitting myself in the head all through the ride.

My sister is rather heavy-chested for her skinny size. She has to try her hardest to find thin bras that don't show it off too much, lucky cow! I do my best to try and find bras that do the exact opposite! Cleavage for the win! Of course if I was in her position I'd feel a bit cursed too (living with the family I mean). Mum always made us cover our chests with a flipping scarf. I hate the bloody things!! She wont event let me tie it up around me so I can stop it falling off everytime I lean over. Jesus she had some insane rules!!

Moroccan background and its the same.

Perfect example is my carnival story.

Day 1 - Outfit = white vest, white long gypsy skirt - so not really slutty, I can do worse trust me.

Finish the outfit off with my morccan flag whistle and head down to notting hill carnival.  From the moment I stepped off the train moroccan men would walk past and say things like "Slut", or "prostitue" in moroccan.  My friend who was with me had always believed I was exaggerating about the double standards or how bad moroccan men could be until this fucking day, because she saw and heard it all with her own eyes.

I ended up taking off the whistle to spare myself the grief.

Day 2 - Outfit = Mini skirt and different white vest (Yeah I like vests, whatever) = way more slutty than day 1.

    Whistle flag = BRAZIL.

And guess what the reaction was then?

"Ooo lala miss brazil"........"ey mammi you look fine".....etc etc   Cheesy Cheesy

Finished the night off drunkenly kissing some south american dude for ages outside of dominos pizza.

Its amazing what a simple whistle change can do for your sex appeal.   Roll Eyes

But anyway that is just one example of how moroccan gusy react when they see a moroccan female without her leash on.

Befoe I got married I was the girl in morocco in mini skirts and a tattoo, smoking a spliff in plain sight and giving the finger to all the moroccan guys who made pathetic statements like that.  But you learn the hard way really.

Sadly, you can be as rebellious as you like, stick as many fingers up at them as you like, when one of them decides to punish you and show you what happens to girls who dress like you, there isn't much you can do in a country like that.

This stupid belief they have that how you dress = modesty makes me sick.  It means that all they see is meat and not a person.  The judgements are further added to and justified because their parents, mums, sisters, muslim extended family all fucking make the same judgements too.

Its not just about how they look at you, or what they say, in the right situation you will get taught a lesson.  Its fucked up.

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

Dude, it's definitely turning into a phobia! I had a particularly embarrassing conversation just a few weeks ago with an indian guy at the checkout, and his attempts to 'chat me up' were so lame and rubbish. It was even more horrible because there were other customers standing behind me waiting their turn and he just wouldn't stop talking!!
