     OP - July 14, 2011, 11:27 AM

Ramadan 2011 is almost here. I thought I start a thread where we can write about our thoughts and experiences.

I'm just glad I'm not living with my parents and have to pretend I'm fasting this year. I'll be enjoying haram food and alcohol with my girlfriend this year. However, I will be thinking about one of my parent will be fasting despite being diabetic and in bad health and my nieces and nephews will be encouraged who are 11 and 13 years old.

    When does it start?

I kept a few last year to show some empathy for the crap that my wife puts herself through each year. First ones I’d kept since I was about 14: they were fucking tough. It’s not so much the food that I struggled with, it’s the tea and cigs that I really missed. Plus I hate doing it because I know it causes bad breath and you’re not allowed to chew gum or anything like that in order to alleviate that.

You should tell (force) your parent to get a doctor’s opinion about whether they are allowed to fast. It may help them see sense, if a doctor were to advise against fasting?

^^^ I've looked for scientific papers on the effect of Ramadan on the human body, but found both positive and negative papers. Even if you criticize in some way, I'm sure they'll find some argument to make it look healthy. It doesn't have longterm negative effects, so I don't think a doctor would advise not to fast.

EDIT: just read we're talking diabetics, yeah you should get a doctor's opinion.

    <dust>: i love tea!!!
    <dust>: milky tea
<three>: soooo gentle for my neck (from the inside)
    <dust>: mm
<three>: it's definitely not called neck
    <dust>: lol
    <three>: what's the word i'm looking for
    <dust>: throat

Agree. Fasting with type II diabetes is possible sometimes, but you need a doctor to advise about medication and eating patterns.

Luckily I'm leaving away from home this Ramadan so I won't have to partake in the farce (fast). But again, my father is in poor health and gets peer pressured by my mum not only to fast but to go to Tarweeh. Basically it's not a very happy month in my household.

One thing I will miss is the awesome food at Iftar... mmm... dahi barray!  Tongue

    *Drools*

My dad is diabetic (II), and sometimes he fasts when he feels well, and he consults his doctor as well. He is also the most religious in our house, so maybe you guys should try talking to your individual parents directly.

I  will be living at home so I have to pretend-fast. 's cool though, I already came out to my mom, so she'll only require that I pretend. dance

Er don't think so. But depending on which mosque it's at I could probably just sneak out ninja-style when everyone goes down for sajda, and come back in the last raka'at... I quite like walking around at night anyway.

How 'bout two hours in a room about half the size of my bedroom with about thirty women - including old auntyjis who just love to give you a lecture 'cause you forgot to take off your eyeliner - wailing children and claustrophobia? *traumatised*

I don't think I'll mind Ramadan too much this year, actually. I need to lose weight.

^Fasting seems to me like it would be counter-productive ... but it works for some people I'm told, so good luck... personally I struggle to go half an hour without eating anything...

Wow, so your parents force you to do Taraweeh? I'm glad that my parents don't do that to me. I did Taraweeh during one Ramadan and I know how hard and tiring it is. Only entertainment is when grown up men start crying thinking they will get more Sawaab. Remember to take water bottles with you and good luck!

It's bearable, so I don't complain too much (to my parents). And our imam is pretty talented, it's quite nice to listen to, actually.

The crying only tends to happen on the 27th night, but that's also the night they hand out rasmalai so it's not all bad. dance

My logic is that if I can not-eat for most of the day... I can not-eat for the rest of the day! (Assuming the first happens, which it won't, but shh.)

    NO!!!!!!!!!!!!  finmad

I HATE RAMADAN. I hate what it does to my family even though I eat behind their backs:
    - makes them tired
    - makes them forgetful/unproductive/emotionally drained
    - physically causes them hunger pain
    - ruins their sleep cycle
    - doesn't allow kids to concentrate studying
    - makes them thirsty - 80% OF YOUR BODY IS WATER

I find it nothing but mass group self-harm SHIELDED by the false virtue of being a FAITH.

I'd love to suggest some things to MPs but they'll just not get it. Thing I'd like to see:
    - fasting for more than 5 hours a day should not be forced to those under the age of 16
    - Islam should at least redefine Ramadan to accept water
    - Islam should cap a 12 hour max fast ... in the UK over the next several years we will be getting to 15 hour daylight days ... during SCHOOL TERM TIME ....

    Sorry for ranting.

    lol.

Anyway I'm gonna go out and study (stuff my face) on the weekdays, and maybe the saturday, stock up food in my room for the weekend.

From my experience a lot of people get really angry while they're fasting because they haven't eaten their food. There is no point in fasting for these types of people. Also people who cuss, and act rude shouldn't be fasting but they still do.  Cheesy

Last year on the night of Lailat-ul-qadr (27th fast) I sneaked out of the mosque and went to a club.  That felt good. Smiley

OMG last ramadan was hell for me, I had to go for taraweeh every night, and couldn't even sneak any food in. It was so fucking annoying and long. Hopefully this year I won't have to fake it, one because I am on medication and I can't not have it, so bingo grin12 and two, my family knows I ain't a muslim so I won't be faking it for them as a favor. Although I am going to take this as a chance to shed some extra pounds that this fucking medication has made me gain. finmad

Still going to have to put up with family's unstable mood swings, and shit. My grandad's an old tyrant, and has a really short temper, so no

My heart goes out to all those who are going to have to fake it. It's going to a long one this year too. hugs

I hate ramadan, good thing i will be in school during the weekdays yet i will change a restaurant for breakfast(which i dont joke with). But i will be at home during weekends, so i have to sneak some food into my room at night or if everyone has gone out(which it often happens grin12). Lastly there is no way in hell im going to do taraweeh, im getting the fuck out of the house or lock myself in the room until they are done.

Nice idea, but Islam will NEVER be redefined to accept water during fasting, though that would be rather nice. Also, MPs are not going to touch Ramadan with a barge pole, parents will just remove their kids from school.

Bloody hell, I forgot about summer time fasting. I am so glad our generation missed out on that - I think we are going to have a population explosion of ex-Muslims around this time...  dance
