    Happy as I am you beat Barcelona, Prince, accept that Terry is your weakest link on and off the pitch.

    Would Chelsea have defended with such exemplary discipline had he not been sent of? Unlikely, I'd say.

    No way I'm buying that. He's been Chelsea's best defender this season. There were seasons past when he was by far the worst, but this has been easily his best since his partnership with Riccy Carvalho became fractured, stopping and starting. Alex/Cahill/Ivanovic don't compliment him as well as players like Riccy and Luiz - quick, pressing, ball playing. Even Gallas was a better match. When he was out earlier in the season Chelsea's defence was the worst it's been since the late days of Scolari. One mistake doesn't make him Chelsea's biggest liability. It was stupid - not the atrocity it's been made out to be, he just took 'let him know you're there' too far - but it wasn't typical. He has a calm head, it just happened to roll off his neck at the wrong moment. Whatever goes on off the pitch - and he has been my least favourite Chelsea player for a lot, lot longer than the bandwagon has been rolling -  John Terry the footballer is a gem. It's tiresome to hear about his 'leadership', but I've barely missed a Chelsea game in 14 years and it is definitely *there*. If the task against Barca wasn't so simple, his organisation would have been missed. Rather him in the final than out of it, always.

    I don't think Terry has ever been a great defender. Probably in the Carragher class as far as defenders go, the kind that will make last ditch saves off of the line and be hailed as a hero. The truth is though that the great defenders like Nesta spot the danger and get rid of it before it even gets to the line.

    Not all CBs have to be sweeper-lites. There is a time and place for nicking the ball, and a time and place for holding firm. And frankly, though it's not the strongest part of his game and well below the likes of Carvalho, JT's ability to read situations is under-rated. People take one look at his horrendous lack of pace and assume he's bound to be caught out with balls in behind. But he has excelled in high lines almost as much as he has on edge of the box. Don't get me wrong, Ivanovic and Alex are superior players, Riccy was streets ahead of anyone in the PL at his best, in my not-unbiased opinion. But put JT with a Gallas, a Carvalho, a Luiz, and he will be a perfect foil.

    And I certainly wouldn't class him with Carragher. They may both be very gritty players, but Carra always struck me as needing that extra yard to complete his duties compared with JT. More of a last-ditch player, more of a 'hero' defender, even. Terry isn't about spectaculars as much, he has more discipline than Carra.

    I haven't seen Terry nearly enough as you but every time I think of Terry playing a high line I remember the public humiliation that Germany gave him at the WC last time.

    You should know by now that making judgements based on 3 week high-profile tournaments is usually a very bad idea. Tongue And he was partnered with Upson... there was so little coherence and awareness of each other that it would have made for a disaster against a counter attacking team even *if* either of them could sprint.

    Carragher is more of a tackler than a marker, thats where Terry has advantage over him.

    Yup, definitely. His plan going into that match seemed to be Chelsea style defense, and after the goal conceded the team looked lost.

    Chelsea could still conceivably make 3rd Cheesy 3 teams above them just can't seem to secure the CL spots. Spurs and Arsenal especially have bottled it too often.

    Also, Torres looked like his mother died yesterday. Can't blame him, sitting on the bench at Wembley all game must be hard to stomach.
