  • Meditation anyone?
     OP - August 26, 2011, 09:11 PM

I am a regular meditator. I have been doing it for a number of years.

    Anyone else into meditation?

    Little Fly, Thy summer's play
My thoughtless hand has brushed away.

I too dance and drink, and sing,
Till some blind hand shall brush my wing.

Therefore I am a happy fly,
If I live or if I die.

Yep yes I meditate at least 3 or 4 times a week, but try and do it everyday. Like physical exercise in its own right, there's nothing else like meditation for the mind.

How do you meditate exactly?  What do you do?  Do you sit on the floor cross legged and say... "Ommmmmmm!"?

or sometimes lie down.. Focus thoughts, clear my mind,
    and concentrate of relaxing.

Actually, I've found that humming a sonorous, protracted Aum really does help. It stops your mind from wandering so much and has an almost hypnotic calming effect to it.

There are various ways. One way is to say a mantra in your mind. Transcendental Meditation is learnt by instruction with a teacher, so there are techniques which you only get the most out of if you are taught by a mentor.

There are other little things you can try. A simple way to begin is to focus on breathing. Make yourself comfortable so you are physically relaxed, close your eyes, and concentrate on your breathing, visualise each breath, focus on the air as it is inhaled and exhaled gently, going down into your lungs and out again. Your breathing will slow down, and you will 'feel' yourself slowing down with it. This is a simple way to meditate and focus. Each techniques are enhancements of a basic process, but the main thing is, you start to focus in such a way that you begin to have a mind consciousness that happens in a way that isn't there when you are focussed on the outward world and on reflex action and thought.

Meditation is all about inwardness, heightened awareness in stillness, and consciousness of mind state.

I like to listen to certain music which can help put me into a trance frame of mind.

Another good way to get you in a medatative state, is to lie down,
start with your feet.. flex... hold... relax.. do that 10 to 20 times.
Then to your calf muscles.  same, and on up till you get to your
head.  Breathe in through your nose deeply and slowly, then exhale
a constant gentle release from your mouth.

when you have gone to your head in this exercise, start your
meditation, however you feel comfortable doing so.  Its okay
    if you fall asleep  Wink

I meditate for a few days in a row then stop. Usually when I have exams or something. It is amazingly calming, esp. with a cup of green tea.

    What I usually do is:
    - Sit in a comfortable position, uncrossed legs, arms.
    - Make sure there are no interruptions, noises etc. for at least 10-15 minutes.
    - Close my eyes.
    - Focus my attention on my breath.
    - Usually thoughts pop up, my sense of hearing gets enhanced right away, but I keep bringing my attention back to my breathing.
    - Breathe deliberately; deep inhalation into both the stomach and the chest. Hold the breath for a couple of seconds, then slowly exhale.
    - Repeat above at least 5 times deliberately (no need to count, just keep doing it).
    - As I breathe deliberately, I start to notice where there is any tension, pain or soreness in my body.
    - Try and relax muscles in my face, jaw, neck, shoulders, stomach, legs, feet. With every breath, deliberately relax muscles more.
    - As my mind wanders, I notice it, and bring my attention back to the breathing.
    - Eventually, my whole body is very relaxed.
    - I keep breathing deeply and slowly.
    - When thoughts arise again, I don't berate myself for having them, but just notice them like they are bubbles floating up and away. Then bring my attention back to my breathing.
    - Mostly I just meditate to relax my mind and get in touch with my body on a deep level.
    - Sometimes, if I have a particular issue I want to focus on, it is then when I am most relaxed and breathing deeply that I will deliberately bring it up in my mind.
    - Since my mind is clearer then, I can look at the issue from a more relaxed perspective. Sometimes, I get an answer as to what I should do about the issue. Other times, I realize that the issue is not what I thought it was, but something else entirely. In all cases, when I do this deliberately, I gain insights.
    - I've also worked with affirmations or messages to my unconscious, as I refer to them. That's not something I've done in a while, but it does help when I do that. Focusing the mind and allowing your attention to remain on your breath lets you see how much you control your own thoughts.
    - The deepest kind of meditation, in my experience, is to try and get in touch with the part of "you" that is doing the thinking, that is focusing the attention, etc. Your raw consciousness.

You'll know when you are ready to return to your everyday world. And if you meditate regularly, it will change how you experience, perceive and process the stimuli of that world.

Music, mantras, and all that can be very useful too. I have used them, and still do at times. I agree that Om is a pretty good one, but you can use any word or sound. Ultimately, the point is to completely relax your body, clarify your mind of the thought machine it constantly is, and learn to be in control of your thoughts, and thus, your feelings, not superficially, but really, deeply. Also, meditation allows you to confront your own subjectivity, and gain compassion for others since everyone is always operating out of their subjectivity, and most people are unaware of their own and other people's subjectivity.

I've attempted to meditate many times but it never works because I can't get my thoughts to just stop for over a few minutes. I'm always thinking about something. The way ^ puts it, I might have to try again with a bit more dedication since I'd love to see those kind of results. I think the occasional quiet and reflective moment has worked for me but I'd love to branch out with chanting and more intense meditation. Something tells me that it might help with OBEs and lucid dreaming as well.

Your ego. IOW, your sense of being something you are not.

Exactly. My wording was "your sense" of being something you are not. I did not say you are something you are not.

In which sense do you mean "ego"?

All the labels, characteristics, qualities, expectations, limitations etc. that you define as "you".

But really, try it a few times. Give it a good few chances yourself. Language is limited. There are experiences like breathing, the noticing of thoughts, the controlling of your mind's attention, the confrontation of your subjectivity, etc. that can only be articulated limitedly, they have to actually be experienced to be understood.

Guided visualization is also a great way to meditate.

heres an example (theres very many different ways, and this particular
one talks about a "guide"... i dont believe that, but you get the gist of
    guided visualization and meditation)

I both understand and don't understand what you say. I'll go practice more.

Btw, has anyone heard of meditating while jogging? I hear it's the new thing and would like to learn it if it's any good. (As soon as I quit smoking.)

Nice to see some people are meditating Smiley

I fell into meditation via learning relaxation techniques.

I started with body relaxation - letting go of tention in various muscles.

My mind was full of chatter. It was in a cheaos of thoughts.

When i started the 'breathing meditation' i realised how chaotic it was!

I couldn't focus my thoughts just for a minute!

But i kept at it. It took some two years to develop a regular routine and bring the chaotic mind to rest.

There are many techniques for meditation. You need to find the one that works for you or combination of them. I use a combination of relaxation, breathing and a TM based technique. It works for me really well.

For those that have restless thoughts you definately need meditation! Smiley

Other thing is that meditation is a technique initself and is nothing to do with religion Smiley
