The phrase "I'm going on a diet" can mean that you're going to eat relatively healthy for a month or two, which will result in you losing some weight, but then after your "diet" you go back to your old eating ways and guess what?  The weight will pile back on.

If you want to be slim and stay slim, instead of "going on a diet" you need to develop healthy eating habits which you adhere to by default day in day out for the long term, as if it's second nature.

drink 8 glasses of water a day, stay away from carbs, go for a very low carb diet, its hard but its prolly the fastest way to lose weight that's also healthy

also, u should invest in supplements, green tea or multi-vitamin tablets for example. And eat lots of proteins (lean meats) and veggies

    good luck Tongue

Cheesy I would never do that.

Anyway, I would help, but I don't really gain weight much (hard as I try). I'm trying to eat more healthily though, so gonna keep an eye on this thread.

I'm going to keep an eye on this thread too since I need the motivation as well. My weight has fluctuated over the years, and like you say, each time it piles back on some more. I've never believed in crash diets but when I'm depressed, I stop eating completely or binge, which doesn't help.

I've started eating smaller portions and less carbs. I usually try to stay away from crisps and sweeties, but sometimes I can't help myself. I absolutely hate exercising... I used to go for salsa classes every week, but I can't find any non-pervy men to go with any more :(
I walk as much as possible these days and I'm planning on doing some strenuous walks around the hills here. Although after seeing stardust's sexy tummy, I feel like running flat out on the treadmill so I can fit into my figure hugging clothes again Grin

I calorie count everything, absolutely everything.

But I have insane limitations for myself.

Yesterday I ate 3 slices of toast, a very very small bowl of homemade chips and a packet of dates for the whole day.

Because I ate the dates, which was high in calorie content, I refused to eat anything else.

This is so ingrained in to me now that even fruit and salad is counted.  I am convinced that the food I ate yesterday made me fat because the dates took me over my severe calorie limitations.  :(

I think its better not to get into the habit of calorie counting, but rather change your food habits without considering the calories.  You will lose weight if you cut out junk food, processed food, and snacking on chocolate bars and tubs of ice cream.

But don't calorie count because it can get stupid.

You know if I eat a packet of nuts I panic because nuts are high in calories.

Imagine being so retarded that you eat toast for breakfast, 98 calories per slice, add some butter and spread and say 150 per slice, 2 = 300 for breakfast.  But because you are like me, you have a 500 calorie per day limit on a bad day, and you eat a packet of nuts that have about 400 calories in them, and then I will simple not eat at all until the next day because even though the nut packet wasn't even the size of a packet of crisps, I am still convinced that the high calorie content = fat.

Apparantly I am wrong, but I'm not sure how.  I wanted to ask somebody yesterday but I was too embarrassed to be back here on 500 calories a day.

But how can a packet of nuts that match a McD's in calorie content not be fattening?

So yeah, unless you are rational and able to understand calories, good ones, bad ones, fatty ones etc, I would steer clear before you start to see food through the eyes I do.

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

^ that's because calorie content isnt the answer to all of dieting problems. Its not the calorie content that matters but really the type of fats you're consuming. Some fats are healthy, others aren't.  That of course is a very simplified answer.

I need to stop calorie counting, and I need to willingly aim higher than 500, say 1000.  But I cry on 1000 calorie days.

    Fucking stupid dieting.

Its a mugs game CD.  I have seen pictures of you, you look fantastic, you also have a stunning face.

I seriously think just change your eating habits.  Don't control calories, just how healthy your food is.

Grill don't fry, avoid processed foods like the plague.  Eat like a cave man, if you can't hunt it, or pick it, or fish it, you shouldn't eat it.

What kind of things did you eat, when you ate little and often?

I have tried a few changes.  Like I had rice pudding made with brown rice and coconut milk and stevia.  Also spinach and egg omelette, which didn't make me feel as bloated as I thought it would.

I need to eat in a way that doesn't make me feel full, since that full feeling is usually followed by self punishment.

So I need to cut wheats, dairy, and processed foods.

No.  :(  Much as I want my booty back, I don't see how to get it without sacrificing everything else.

I feel at my best when I manage to get motivated enough to go to the gym twice a week and eat healthily. For me this means plenty of vegetables and fruit, with only a little bit of meat, brown everything (rice, pasta, bread) no alcohol, no cakes and sweeties and no junk food. I love eating like this; I find I can eat as much as I want and not get fat and I have loads more energy.

A lot of the time it is easy for me to eat like this because the family are all away for work, college and uni, but when they are all at home I cook differently and I bake and make desserts. Then the temptation is too great and I start to tuck in to stuff that puts on weight and in the long run just makes me lethargic and blobby. Come September I am determined to get back into a good routine and shed the extra pounds.

One thing I don't think I will be ever be able to reverse now though are the very definite effects of middle age spread; somehow your waist just thickens no matter how hard you try to avoid it and this has even happened to my super skinny sister which I suppose is some consolation.

I have been trying to get back into healthy eating for a while now, I tried all kind of plans the only one that worked well with me in the past and I managed to maintain a weight within the lower end of my healthy weight range according to the BMI, this was when I followed a caveman diet, mainly meat and fat.

During my travel I lost a couple of Kilos because I was moving all day long, I also had one big meal at breakfast and that included Japanese type miso soup (no rice) and a Malaysian curry (no rice just the chicken in coconut curry sauce).  I was full the rest of the day, so didn’t bother with food, had some drinks though, like natural coconut water drink (out of a coconut shell, they sell those on the streets) and sometimes soya milk with gelatin in it (heh, these are popular drinks in the far east, gelatin has a lot of health benefits I hear)  Anyway, I was also moving and walking all day long.

Since I got back I have been trying to do the same thing, have my big breakfast,  so I prepare a big meaty breakfast the night before (or  just dump chicken/joint in the slow cooker overnight) and try not to have anything major the rest of the day, I really do feel a lot more energised having a big breakfast.  My only problem now is that I am sitting at a desk all day, so I think I gained back some of the weight I lost.  I try to go to the gym, but its not enough, I must do more, like running etc.  I also made the mistake of buying some mennah& salwa desert, and haven’t been able to resist them now and again.  But really I must put them away or give them to someone else.

I really want to start again to be healthy, I need a lot of motivation… should I make dua’ so that Allah helps me to be determined lol, this is what helped me in the past believe it or not.

I personally don’t believe in calories too much, I think if one eats the right food they should equalise their weight to a healthy range,  not over weight and not underweight.

To expand on what's already been said and add my own points:

    - Don't count calories. If you're eating junk food all day, I guarantee that you're way over your calorie limit. Just reduce the amount of crap you put into your body and from there see if you lose weight or not. Adjust accordingly. Personally I check calorie content, but just to have a general idea of what I'm putting into my body. There's never a reason for a 1,000 calorie deli sandwich.

    - Cut carbs. Contrary to popular belief, fats aren't the biggest problem with most people's diets; it's carbs. That doesn't mean you should pig out on fats, it means a lot of people tend to cut fats and forget about the carbs. There are a lot of wasted carbs in our regular diets: bread, rice, etc. Most cuisine staples are just a waste of calories. Go for alternatives. The Incas called quinoa "the mother of all grains", it's one of the healthiest things you can put in your body. Imagine something that acts like rice with way less carbs and more protein and fibre, and you need less of it to fill you up.

    - Make sure you're eating enough fruits and veggies. They're way healthier fillers than carbs.

    - Drink a shitload of water. I always have a glass of water next to me when I'm at home and drink it unthinkingly. Your body needs water to metabolize food. Not enough water means your body isn't breaking down the energy, which means your food is being stored as fat. Also, sometimes you think you're hungry when in fact you're thirsty. Drinking water will make sure you don't eat when you're not even hungry.

    - Salads aren't what they're made out to be. Sure, there are some healthy salads, but don't be surprised if a salad is 900+ calories. Many people equate 'salad' with 'healthy'. Not the case. Make sure you know what's in your salad.

    - Watch what you're drinking. A lot of people gain weight because they drink a lot. Some drinks are full of calories.

    - Eat a small meal/snack every two or three hours instead of a big meal every four or five. Eating in small proportions stabilizes your metabolism. Eating big meals when your metabolism slows down means you're giving your body more than it can break down fast enough.

    - Try to limit eating out. Restaurants tend to have huge portions, and you have no idea what they put in there.

    - Snack healthily. Eating the occasional chocolate bar is fine, eating one everyday is not. There are a lot of healthy snacks, and they don't have to taste like shit. What I do is I buy healthy stuff when I go grocery shopping so that I need to go out of my way if I'm craving chocolate, candy, etc and it's not readily available for me to just grab out of the cabinet.

    - You don't have to sacrifice taste for a healthier diet. If your diet is bland and tasteless it's not going to last long.

    - Don't convince yourself you've become a health freak overnight, that's not going to happen, your diet will last a few weeks before you snap and go back to where you were. Do things slowly and make permanent changes. Don't just ask yourself if this thing is healthy/unhealthy, ask yourself if you're willing to add it into / take it out of your diet permanently. If you diet for a week then decide you need a break then you're doing it wrong. It's much better to do things in moderation throughout than to be overly strict for a few days then take breaks. Thinking that you need a break means you're viewing your diet as something bad that you need to escape from every once in a while. Approach your diet with a positive attitude. Healthy food is delicious and being healthy will make you happy.
