What family values are you guys referring to?

SD, I think there's an assumption among some people that the likes of you and I don't have family values.

Those for whom family/clan are paramount find it hard to believe that you can love your family without living in their pocket.
  • Re: Are you racist?
     Reply #95 - September 06, 2011, 12:08 AM

I've heard the above before from Asian/muslim friends who were trying to justify that behaviour (sometimes their behaviour), I don't personally find it convincing. What family values are you guys referring to?

Of course I've met some Asian muslims who didn't care what colour any muslim was and treated everyone the same, or married outside of their race.

    1. I guess they are referring to the values that can only be held by some races.

    2. How would those people feel knowing that you stereotype them?

More in detail on both points now. First point is sarcastic of course. You may be right that most of those cases were identified correctly by you as manifestations of racism. I never denied that racism exists. However I am sure you will admit that at least some of those instances are indeed about some silly cultural beliefs, such as "people from my part of the world have the same family values".  The percentage here I believe is irrelevant if you claim that everyone should be judged as an individual. Even if it's 0.00001% or just one person in the world. On that one percent you projected if not your racist judgement then at least an incorrect judgement influenced by racism. Is it fair? Do you want to be treated that way? Is that a "defense mechanism" that Saffire was talking about? Do we need such a defense mechanism when we attribute qualities to people based on other peoples actions? If you met 10 people in your life and 9 of them were tall and also deceived you, while the one short person was nice and honest with you, do you really want to treat a new tall person you meet differently because of that instead of a short person? Where does it get you, or anyone? Why is racism not any more silly than attributing general traits of honesty to tall people vs short people? Does anyone think that racism is more justified? Why do you want to keep playing this game? Do you think you have no role in perpetuating it if you do?

    ^ good points

In response, yes- in my opinion you would be inclined to judge the tall person based on previous experience. However, I think this is where we seperate nature, the animalistic unthinking part of us that is diminishing as we evolve, and mind, the thinking part containing reason and logic.

If you meet some nasty tall people then the next tall person, you may automatically prejudge. You may be on your guard. However, mind will inform you you're being stupid. That the nasty tall people have no bearing on this new tall person, that the specimen of sample was not large enough to arbitrarily judge all tall people.

This goes further than racism. When I meet a person I have an instant like/dislike. Not a deep rooted feeling that is fact, just a sense. This is always to do with memory/association. I feel awkward with people who don't speak english for example- not cos I'm an elitist 'westerner', but because I feel embarrassed that we can't communicate. I met a girl today who I instantly liked, later realising it's cos she smells like my aunty (a sweet fragrant scent mingled with light hint of cigarette smoke) and I love my aunt. If I meet a dog first time ever and it bites me, I won't reserve judgement for fear of being 'prejudiced' next time I meet a dog.

Basically, all I'm saying is that we judge people all the time instantly, intinctively. Not just by race, by many many factors that are often not even realised by us. We don't just have a 'sense' that people are good (6th sense?), it's based on memory and experience (I think)

    Saffire,

Nothing at all in your post that I want to disagree with. Does any of it imply that we even need words for races, or  to use them in our daily lives or to stereotype the so called races as in example "asians are more racist (in general of course <-i.e. I am not saying anything bad about anyone, no I'm too smart for that)"?

The word racist is not nevessary imo since, like I said, race is not the only factor we base judgement on, and for some it's not a factor at all. Seems to me the apt word is predudism- to prejudge- doesn't imply race at all but could relate to a numer of factors.

No, I'm sorry but I don't believe that all sorts of prejudices are the main topic of this thread. I would have to ask SD to confirm, but I believe he wanted to talk specifically about the problems related to racism.

Prejudging that you talk about is based on personal experience and will rarely result in genocides or books written about inferior redheaded people who smoke and wear yellow shoes.

Today I yelled at a desi dad who was trying to butt into line at the food court with his ENTIRE FAMILY OF FOUR in front of me. He was obviously a total FOB, he looks at me and smiles... that "hey i'm a brown, ur a brown" smile that every immigrant gives and thinks since he's an "uncle" he can get ahead of me. He doesn't even bother asking nicely.. he just smiles and butts right in thinking it's all dandy. So i unloaded on the poor sucker, I'm normally not that mean.. but dammit I was hungry, it was Koryo Korean BBQ and I love that shit. And then he played like he was dumb "oh i thought this is where line start.. haha". Another classic desi ploy. Dammit Desis!

I've heard the above before from Asian/muslim friends who were trying to justify that behaviour (sometimes their behaviour), I don't personally find it convincing. What family values are you guys referring to?

There is no justification for open, outright racism but you're being very naive & idealistic if you think that most people are not prejudiced, in some way, when choosing a life partner. Many factors play a part in that decision & that can & will include racial or cultural background of a prospective partner for many. It can also include physical characteristics and/or wealth. If you're saying that for white people racial/cultural origin does not play as much of a part in that decision then I disagree.
The family/cultural values I was referring to was that fact that many asians/muslims still live in close knit/extended families & so for many acceptance within the family is a factor for them. This is changing though as more & more asian muslims adopt the nuclear family unit.

I've heard many stories of the ethnocentric/racist behaviour rife in the English muslim community - and personally witnessed too much - for me to believe the 'family values' justification/excuse is legit.

Yes & I've experienced much prejudice & racism from white people in the UK. Does it make me tar them all with the same brush- NO. Does it make me hate them- NO. As Billy says most human beings are complex & flawed creatures that don't always do what is logical & what is ideal.
Also, I'm not trying to justify racism here. Merely explain inherent cultural differences which will have an impact on a choice of partner/marriage decision for anyone (regardless of race) & for you to single out the Asian community as inherently more racist is a) unfair and b) Prejudicial (even racist itself)

I'll reiterate. It's a problem in the British muslim community, in London where they have large Somalian and Arab muslim communities I'm told that the exact same problems exists that I've witnessed in the Asian muslim community.

I personally think that racism and ethnocentric behaviour is a deep problem in the UK muslim community that isn't addressed or accepted by most muslims - apart from converts.

The largest ethnic muslim group - to my knowledge - in the UK are Asians, so most of my personal experience, and most other converts experience is with the Asian muslim community. Sorry if seems I'm singling them out.

Like I wrote before I believe based on experiences, and the experiences of others that the majority of Asian muslims are racist, or extremely ethnocentric to the point of exclusion. I've heard racist remarks during my time as a muslim from the most 'moderate/welcoming' muslim dudes in the community.

It's not something that I'm not open to challenge, but around Britain you'll see 'imported' imams, predominantly one ethnicity catered for in the mosques, and if you speak to the majority of converts they'll relay stories of direct racism or exclusion due to the ethnocentric nature of the community. That has been my consistent experience.

In light of what I witnessed - and still witness - I simply believe that the majority are racist. I might be wrong but I would have to witness a radical change in the structure of the Asian muslim community to believe otherwise.

I've experienced racism from white people throughout my life too, however I've experienced much more indifference to my race and inclusion from white people than during my time in the Asian muslim community.

To be fair so that it doesn't seem like I'm focusing on Asian racism - most of the parents/guardians of white girls I used to date were racist, and I did at one time contemplate not dating white women again because it began to piss me off.

Also like I wrote I do have racist inclinations. Even my wife (who I explained is half black, half asian) has an aversion to Asian people due to her experiences - even her fucking (Asian) dad has made racist remarks.

We'll have to agree to disagree regarding my belief that the majority of Asian muslim are racist.

That's cool SD. Marriage & dating aside, I have to admit though, I'm quite surprised that you & other converts have experienced direct racism & exclusion on the basis of your race but then again I haven't gone into a mosque for prayer or anything related to islamic activity for a long time because I hate the places.
Your point though just reveals how hypocritical muslims can be coz the muslim ummah & principle of brotherhood should be blind to racial prejudice of any sort. That's the official sales pitch anyway which appears to be another bit of bullshit from the world of Islam which seems to be out of touch with reality.

In my experience black converts are barely noticed, unless they are cool hip hop type males who the browns guys (usually with a severe identity crisis) can imitate and parrot. Black female converts are treated with general indifference and or avoidance.. especially by the muslim males. White converts are adored and loved, especially white females who all the "brothers" orbit around like flies to shit. Assuming they aren't ugly of course.

I'm racist/sexist towards desi women and white men. It's more of a fear, really - I'm uncomfortable around them, especially if there's some physical contact. I've managed to get over it somewhat, though, because you can't really get away from hugging all those aunties at weddings.

    Desi women - bad experiences'n'stuff.
White men - slightly less bad experiences that triggered flashbacks to the bad experiences with desi women.
Yes, I do realise I'm generalising pretty much everyone as some sort of monster, but knowing that not all of them are monsters doesn't necessarily mean I believe it. >.<

    I'm assuming you're female?

I'm quite instinctly racist towards desi women too. I didn't realise how uncomfortable I am around them until 2 months ago when my gf (white) introduced me to a close friend of hers who was a pakistani muslim girl.. and goddam did shit get awkward. It's hard to explain, but I always feel weird around them. Too many bad memories, and then there's the whole racial issue of being with a white girl and desi girls give you nasty looks. I just feel judged and hated around them.

This general ignorance from the ordinary masses may go some way to explain Anjem's looney toons having so many converts in their ranks... They know they will be ignored at best by the majority, so as the only ones that will pay them attention,  can easier lure them to the dark side

You are the strangest dude I've ever seen, SD. You quote my post and then not only you don't answer my questions but you also talk about stuff that I never denied.

So it may well be that people you endearingly call "asians" have more racist beliefs or attitudes than others in Britain. So what? Wouldn't you agree that peoples beliefs are mostly geographical? For example in Iran most believe in shia' nonsense. In Greece most are orthodox christians, etc etc. So the people you're stereotyping have a common geographical background. That's what their prevailing racist attitudes  are about, right? Unless you insist that some races, ethnicities are naturally more islamic and others pagan?

Please notice that I never denied racism within muslim community. I just think it should be addressed as such with no need for racial breakdown of which race is more racist, because I think it does more damage than good.
