A little bit. I hate most Pakis that I've met.

Demba, please read this and reflect on it:

We've been having a chat about this in the staff board. The consensus is that arX isn't racist himself (or not that we've noticed) but we feel his use of "Now there's a nigger." was a bit of a faux pas and should preferably not be repeated.

The same would apply even if he had used the alternative spelling of "nigga", or any other variants thereof.

Like Chris Rock says, if you aren't black you shouldn't really be using those terms to describe other people. This may not apply between close friends in real life (sort that out yourselves), but it's a good rule of thumb for online discussion boards and similar situations.

Note that not being white per se is not the same as being black per se. For the purposes of using the aforementioned terms, anyone who is not actually black becomes an honorary whitefella. Live with it. Tongue

If you are black and you want to use those terms, use them at your own discretion.

As an example, the other day Serrated Colon used "niggaz" to refer to some figures in Somalian politics (IIRC). SC is Somalian himself, so I'm not going to take it upon myself to be offended on behalf of all Somalians apart from SC. If any of them want to take it up with him, they can go ahead.

OTOH, if a black person was genuinely offended and SC (purely hypothetically) decided to keep throwing those terms in their face just to troll them, the staff would do something about it. Not because of the word per se, but because he would be being an asshole.

Short version: anyone with half a brain should be capable of being fairly sensible, mature and aware about the appropriate uses or otherwise of certain terms. If you cannot understand this, you may find yourself in a sticky situation.

'Paki' is a word with racist connotations and when used in conjunction with an expression of hatred it is pretty clear that it is highly offensive.

Community-immunity might apply to Pakistanis who use it, but we need to understand the boundaries here.

    Common sense and all that.

Racism is as I understand it a formal term from marxism, sociology and the law.  The term racialism used to be used.

But it is not the only form of discrimination.  Arguably disablism is more important, as we are talking about weaker groups and indirect unconscious discrimination - someone designing somewhere with steps unnecessarily arguably is being discriminatory.

Language is fascinating - the disabled, people with disabilities, disabled people?  The self referential terms are of note - gimp, wheelie, stickie.

Religion is the latest one.  I basically think if you are treating beliefs respectfully you must include worshippers of the fsm, trekkies, etc.

There is often a marxist ideology behind these discussions - that white young fit males are the worst and everyone else is more class conscious and somehow nearer to heaven.

When I first read your post automatically I wondered if it was somethign to do with the level of racism towards pakistanis in the UK, but then I remembered that Iblis/jesus christ, is from the US and he has an equal amount of hatred towards them.

I've seen far more racism towards pakistanis and indians who are all painted with the same brush, than I have seen towards black people in the UK.  I guess because it is the south asians who make up the largest foreign population in the UK it's probably more visible.

In Birmingham Paki's hate the Jamaicans and vice-versa. I don't know if you can call that racism, Somali's hate the Jamaicans too but they get along with Pakis alot more and infact have a united front against the Jamaicans on the streets. Untied by faith? Somali's are crazy twats, Jamaicans are shit scared of them.

My ex, of Nigerian origin, used to be called "oreo" amongst her community because she's a rational sceptic that criticised the flawed trends she saw and in part because she was outspoken about her atheism.

Considering the underlying dynamics of power is it possible for a 'person of colour' to be racist? Can a woman be sexist? Serious question btw.

Depends on how you define "racism." If you define it simply as racial prejudice then yes, without a doubt it's not just possible, but common. If you define it as systemic, institutionalized racial prejudice then it becomes more difficult, but not impossible.

For instance consider a man like Clarence Thomas or Colin Powell, or a woman like Condoleeza Rice, both of whom are in (or have been in) high ranking positions of power and have perpetuated systemic racism against both members of their own race and those of other races (e.g. Arabs and other pesky brown folks from the curry and falafel eating areas of the world), one could even make the argument for Obama, so I'd say, yes, even in countries where people of color are the minority it is still possible for a person of color to wield power in a way that reinforces racism, thus making them "racist" in that sense of the word.

Then one must also consider countries where people of color are the majority and thus part of the power structure within those nations-- is there any doubt, for example, that people of color in Sri Lanka have engaged in racism, or at least systemic bigotry against the Tamil people? How about Mugabe? Or the discrimination against the Bushmen in many Southern African nations? Or Idi Amin's pogroms against South Asians? And can it be denied that the massacre in Rwanda was fueled by a very clear ideology of Hutu ethnic supremacism? There are tons of examples of people in positions of power in Black and Brown nations discriminating against their own ethnic, racial, religious, and national minorities.

    fuck you

Looks like a typical conservative witch-hunt to expose "Black racism" amongst left-wingers. See that shit all the time in this country. She should not have made the comment but she apologized for it and seemed to recognize why it was wrong, so end of fuckin story as far as I'm concerned, but of course the British Right won't let it be the end of the story, cause, like I said, seems like a right-wing witch-hunt to me.

Yes to me it seems like a racist comment. Why should it be acceptable to generalise white people like that? As if all white people have this hidden dirty agenda?

Yeah, I completely agree with all your points. Those are exactly the sort of arguments I usually use when confronted with argument that <racism = prejudice + power thus only 'whites' can be racists>.

Not sure if she really apologised, at least not in a sense that she understands why her comments were a simplistic generalization.

She claimed that her tweet was a reference to 19th century 'European' colonialism. However in her tweet she clearly used present tense - "White people love playing "divide & rule" We should not play their game."
On top of that saying that there was such a thing as European colonialism (which implies universality) is a simplistic generalization in itself. Only a few of the most powerful European nations engaged in colonialism.

She has quite a history of making 'interesting' comments though. Among other things she told a black studies conference in Philadelphia that ‘the British invented racism’ and attacked her local hospital for employing 'blonde, blue-eyed Finnish girls'. Apparently they were unsuitable as nurses because they had 'never met a black person before'.

She's an MP. Has she ever promulgated or supported any policies or legislation which discriminated against Whites or other non-Black folk? Cause if she hasn't then I'm much more willing to forgive whatever dumb or racist comments she's made. When it comes to political figures I'm much more interested in what they DO then what they SAY-- politicians talk all kinds of bullshit, doesn't necessarily mean anything.

Anyone who harbours any such feelings is on notice about expressing their bigotry here now in light of this thread.

She's stuck in the identity-politics mindset and battles of the 1980's. She tweeted that comment in a discussion with a black lady who was objecting to the idea that black people needed unelected 'community leaders' supposedly speaking on behalf of all black people in the media.

Diane Abbot is most disliked for her stance over private schools - opposing and speaking out against them as an MP for the Labour party, whilst sending her child to a very expensive private school because she can afford it.

What ails her most is that like so many politicians, she is on some issues, viewed by the general public as a brazen hypocrite.
