I've got Elphaba! The "Wicked" Witch of the West from the Land of Oz! Hello!

    Hmm, I'm not convinced J&T.
I think she's stretching the definition of critter rather.  Wink

New weekly theme! You have a choice!

Animals from Oz (Australia or Land of Oz)
    or
    Baby Pandas!
    Grin

Ok Elphaba is not an "animal" (although evolutionarily, we all are Tongue) She was an Animal-lover (read the book "Wicked" by Gregory Maguire, they are awsum).

oh! I know!  Have to share the origin, and factoids/history  about
the avitar you are presenting for the week. That way, we will all
learn a bit about each one.

I did take some liberty with my current one Wink But I figured, it's still related to the "Land of Oz"

Elphaba is the main character from Gregory Maguire's series that began with the novel "Wicked".

    Quote
Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, is a parallel novel published in 1995 written by Gregory Maguire and illustrated by Douglas Smith. It is a revisionist look at the land and characters of Oz from L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, its sequels, and the 1939 film adaption The Wizard of Oz. Unlike the popular 1939 movie and Baum's writings, this novel is not directed at children, and contains adult language and content including violent imagery and sexual situations.

It is the first in the Wicked Years series followed by Son of a Witch, published in Autumn of 2005, and A Lion Among Men, published in October 2008. A fourth (and possibly final) novel in the series, Out of Oz, is to be released November 1, 2011.

The novel is a political, social, and ethical commentary on the nature of good and evil and takes place in The Land of Oz, in the years leading to Dorothy's arrival. The story centers on Elphaba, the misunderstood green-skinned girl who grows up to become the notorious Wicked Witch of the West. Gregory Maguire fashioned the name of Elphaba (pronounced /ˈɛlfəbə/) from the initials of Lyman Frank Baum, L-F-B. The story is divided into five different sections based on the plot location.

    My current Avitar:

    Quote
The Echidna (or Spiny Ant-eater) and the Platypus share the distinction of being the only two surviving monotremes, a primitive link between the reptiles and the other more advanced mammals. Like the Platypus, the Echidna lays eggs.

Echidnas are widely distributed throughout Australia, and New Guinea. In Australia they live in a variety of habitats, from dry deserts to humid rainforests or in the Australian Alps.

Currently, my avatar, a desert fox....

The fennec fox (Vulpes zerda) is a small nocturnal fox found in the Sahara of North Africa. Its most distinctive feature is unusually large ears. The name "fennec" comes from the Arabic word for fox, and the species name zerda has a Greek origin that refers to its habitat. The fennec is the smallest species of canid in the world; coat, ears and kidney functions have adapted to a high-temperature, low-water, desert environment. In addition, its hearing is sensitive enough to hear prey moving underground.

Though if it wasn't for the SFW thing, I would have used this to go along with the desserts thing instead:
