    I think it's a valid point. As an adult who has looked into religious teachings, looked into the arguments for and against, familiarised myself with centuries of teachings and traditions and interpretations, weighted things up, I can honestly say I'm an atheist. No child comes out the womb with an encyclopedic knowledge of a particular faith or philosophy and thinks "Yeah. That makes sense. I'll go with that."

    It's the profession of Islamic faith and the very core of Islamic creed. By saying those words you are formally announcing that you have become a Muslim(if you already aren't)

    The meaning is: "I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is his Messenger"

    I meant without me having to ask what it means. That's one of the things I always found odd with dawah people, they'd throw in all these Arabic sentences when they know full well I don't have a clue what they're on about. Sounds like gibberish.

    And I knew what it meant, by the way. Google is your friend. This is, after all, a site dedicated to ex-Muslims.

    That's because it is gibberish - even, perhaps especially, when it's been translated.

    I was always told it was "No god except Allah", not "No other deity worthy of worship.." But I am not fluent in Classical Arabi, either.

    Could you provide an academic source for this?
    No free mixing of the sexes is permitted on these forums or via PM or the various chat groups that are operating.

    Women must write modestly and all men must lower their case.

    It's actually "there is no one worthy of worship except Allah"...not deity.

    I was quoting Seeker from post #404. I was surprised to see it in that particular form too, hence my question. I had always heard it translated as "... there is no god but Allah ...".

    maybe the difference is semantical. No deity/No other God/No one....all alludes to the same thing.

    Ultimately Kodanishi is correct:

    Laillaha Illalah, 'There is none worthy of worship, except for Allah' or 'There is no God but Allah.'

    The concept of Tawhid remains intact with either words beings used. However, the former wording does not just refer to 'deities' but human subjects of worship too, thus reinforcing the concept of sovereignty remaing with Allah alone.

    Either way, saying deities/no one/God is a non argument.

    It is. It is either "there is noone worthy of worship except Allah" or "there is no god except Allah". The first translation is not a literal translation, like many other translations in arabic.
