    We've been having a chat about this in the staff board. The consensus is that arX isn't racist himself (or not that we've noticed) but we feel his use of "Now there's a nigger." was a bit of a faux pas and should preferably not be repeated.

    The same would apply even if he had used the alternative spelling of "nigga", or any other variants thereof.

    Like Chris Rock says, if you aren't black you shouldn't really be using those terms to describe other people. This may not apply between close friends in real life (sort that out yourselves), but it's a good rule of thumb for online discussion boards and similar situations.

    Note that not being white per se is not the same as being black per se. For the purposes of using the aforementioned terms, anyone who is not actually black becomes an honorary whitefella. Live with it. Tongue

    If you are black and you want to use those terms, use them at your own discretion.

    As an example, the other day Serrated Colon used "niggaz" to refer to some figures in Somalian politics (IIRC). SC is Somalian himself, so I'm not going to take it upon myself to be offended on behalf of all Somalians apart from SC. If any of them want to take it up with him, they can go ahead.

    OTOH, if a black person was genuinely offended and SC (purely hypothetically) decided to keep throwing those terms in their face just to troll them, the staff would do something about it. Not because of the word per se, but because he would be being an asshole.

    Short version: anyone with half a brain should be capable of being fairly sensible, mature and aware about the appropriate uses or otherwise of certain terms. If you cannot understand this, you may find yourself in a sticky situation.

    Well I have nothing against the word "niggaz/nigger". I am also Somali, but then again i understand if African-Americans or other Blacks have something against the word.

    Can we also apply this policy to the word paki? Many Pakistani's find that offensive as well.

    I asked only in this particular case. You can understand the emotional severity of using this word. It is so severe that you wouldn't even use the gold chain word, because someone within their race might find that offensive as well.

    I think the policy should be that if someone who is a decent person is offended at the use of a word and politely requests someone not use it, whether or not the person actually had racist or bigoted intent in using the word, they should be courteous and not use the word here. This should not apply if person using the word does not have ill intent and person requesting word not be used is a total douchebag. For example if I used the term "Paki" in a non-hateful way and allat or Aphrodite requested I not use it, I should not use it, but if muddy requested I not use it I would tell him to kiss my ass.

    I think its a little bit of stretch for that being done. Paki doesnt have the same amount of negativity and historical suffering behind it. I think its so very easy for us to identify if someone uses the word as a slur. It would be "fockin Packy" or "fuck off Paki" or in a sentence where we know there is resentment between the person who made it and the one its directed at like "yeah okay, Paki,...". Calling someone a Paki in a derogatory manner is tantamount to calling them an 'infidel'. It holds the same meaning; someone outside your kin, who is unlike you in a significant way and unworthy because of that.

    Furthermore alot of non-British people have no idea what it means. Equivalent to the usage of the term 'Jap' in the US. And Desis use the word alot between themselves to refer to Pakistanis. And this forum is mostly Desi.

    Well i don't personally get offended by the word Paki but many people living in Pakistan( at least the ones that i talked to) would take that as a racial slur ESPECIALLY if it comes from an Indian. No offense to Indians.
