     OP - January 31, 2012, 06:27 PM

Ok so I have been a pack a day smoker for the past 26 years. I previously tried quitting in 2009 using a medication called Zyban. Over the past few weeks my superior at work and one of my colleagues tried a new medication called Champix and both my superior and colleague have kicked the habit. I decided to try champix and got my first 2 week supply tonight and start the course tomorrow.

The reason I am writing this is to get encouragement as well as note any side effects as I have heard many strange stories regarding this meds.
    Anyway wish me luck

I know of quite a few long term heavy smokers who have given up successfully so it definitely can be done. Afro

oh wow.. very cool.. the best decision!! and i swear you won't regret it.. its been about 2 months since my last smoke.. this time i used the patch..
i used to smoke a little more than one pack a day , since i was 16 (no need to go into more details  grin12)for about the same amount of time , anyways..
    you can do this..
i tried Zyban before.. it drove me nuts for about 2 weeks with weird nightmares and didn't sleep properly for a few days.. you will get that with champix too.. but champix seems to work a bit better than zyban..
yeah so a few sleepless nights..
    a touch of anxiety..
and vivid dreams..  were what i went through with zyban and a friend of mine with champix..

btw.. zyban has another name "wellbutrin" its the same exact medicine just marketed differently.. comes in handy if you have to pay for your meds.

    yaaay doc!!..  dance

Thank you for all the positive feedback  thnkyu

Started today and my stop smoking date is set for the 10th Feb

@Nessrriinn, with Zyban I stopped for about a week but then the little voices conquered me  whistling2 Hopefully there will be no little voices this time around. I have read up on the side effects for champix and there is a lot, the insomnia and weired dreams according to the champix leaflet occurs quite often, I hope I am not affected because I can sleep anywhere as I suffer from Sleep Apnea.

Once I've quit smoking my next aim would be to lose weight so that I can tackle the sleep apnea.

I want to quit but I don't want to use meds to achieve it.

Instead I've bought an electric cigarette as I know a fair few people who have completely stopped using them.

I've smoked from it a couple of times, you need at most 3 inhalations to get the same nicotine high that your very first smoke of the day would give you.  It really does feel like I am smoking.  Was surprised at how satisfied it made me feel for awhile.

I've tried to patches before, managed 48 hours before cracking.

So yep, I shall be using my electric smoke to see if tat works for me since for me it is very much the relaxing routine of smoking itself, the inhaling, the hand movement, all of that, that makes quitting hard for me.  I need something to do with my hands as I am very fidgety.

Anyway good luck, I really wish you well and hope you manage to kick the habit.   Afro

i've tried the electric cig too.. the one i had was pretty cool.. had the smoke effect and the crackling sound as if it was really lit.. but didn't work.. holding it is part of the whole addiction for me, i had to break the total habit of it or i would be sooooo easily tempted to light up a real one again.. it's either all or nothing when it comes to me and cigs.. there are people i know that can smoke one cig and not touch it for another year.. i can't do that, but right now i'm sooo ok with not smoking, it has to be the best thing i ever did for myself, (cliche i know,)..
the first time i stopped smoking , i was soo worried about the weight gain, that i started back up again..
this time , no worries, no excuses.. it can be done without gaining a pound~!

Dr Z.. yeah the sleep thing only lasts a few days.. even with champix, but you can get past that.. and with champix you will actually start to find the smell and taste of the cig disgusting, it'll be very very easy to put it down..
i'm soo excited for you.. you can do this!!!..  Afro

So it is day 10 of my attempt to stop smoking and today was suppose to be my quit date, however I was advised to change the quit date to the 13th Feb as nobody quits before a weekend Smiley
I am currently down from smoking a pack a day to 3 or 4 max a day now.
I feel confident that I will give up smoking by Monday.
There was a lot of negative erviews about champix regarding the side-effects, after 10 days on the product I am still to encounter a side-effect. So far so good.

Will update again on Monday or Tuesday, lets hope it is positive news

So it is Valentines day and I have not had a cigarette since Sunday evening.
Thank you for all your encouragement.
Not smoking at work is no problem, when I get home that is the problem, last night I was dreaming that I was smoking and cursed myself everytime I lit one up in my dream.
I hope day 2 is better than day 1
Currently on Day 14 of the medication

Trying to think of other things, unfortunately I think of cigs most of the day but the cigs are not going to beat me this time.  dance

Well Dr Z, Take a grip at this stage and when you get those nicotine driven subversive little thoughts do something to distract your mind.
You can take a walk, being very careful not to pass the ciggy shop and you'll be helping your weight loss too and toning up already.  When you really get your wind back you can go for a swim - not too energetic for a start or a good lung-stretcher walk and get back feeling so much better.
You can even read a book to take your mind off the cravings for a while, they only last a couple of minutes.

The side effects people are experiencing whilst on 'meds' are what most people get anyway when they do it without chemical aids. You can get constipated or develop diarrhoea or both. You may cough a lot more because of all the gunge in your lungs and bronchii  sloughing off as your rows of lung  cirri start to revive from the poison induced paralysis and working properly again to keep your airways clear. you may experience unexplained cramps and overheating as your periphery and your blood vessels start to expand to normal again.  Your complexion will lose its dead looking smoker's pallor as blood begins to suffuse those rosy cheeks again. And, yes, you will experience nightmares as your mind learns how to cope without its 20 minute shots of poisons. You'll get your taste and smell back again - ever wondered if lettuce really tasted of anything? Well it does, as you'll discover. Your eyes may seem to water a lot too because if you were one of those smokers who let the smoke drift upwards there's no crap to flush away now and it'll take a while for the duct flow to adjust. The skin in your mouth and on your tongue may also slough off causing soreness for a short time.
There are many other effects but I think that's enough for now. This is all quite normal and is to be welcomed because it's your body coming back to life again; so don't think "I feel awful without my chemical crutch, I'll just have one fag." Ride through the small withdrawal cravings and the brief temporary side effects and 2 weeks later you'll begin to feel the real benefits.
What you really need to consider is how to fill the time you used to spend smoking or spent thinking about your next fag. There will be a vacuum until you address this. Think about what you would like to do and who you would like to be and get into activities that will steer you that way. It doesn't matter how old you are, everybody has large or small ambitions, so go for it.
I won't say 'good luck' - what you need is a small amount of ambition and determination. I'm sure you've got that or you wouldn't be trying to
    beat the dreaded weed.
I gave up in 1992, by the way and it was one of the best, most positive things I ever did. After 6 months I was back to running half marathons again, but then again that was my small ambition: what's yours?

When you realise that there's c. 3000+ really bad chemicals and compounds in tobacco which is suddenly released in a hot, noxious, absorbable gas the wonder of it is that that's all that happens to you.
The bit that sticks in my craw with 'stop smoking' nostrums is that the tobacco companies producing cigarettes also make the 'nicotine replacement patches, gums, etc. They really don't know when to let go do they. It doesn't need replacing, it has to be eliminated. Don't fall for so called 'replacement' anything when you're trying to chuck the muck. Remember, the default position is 'not smoking'.
They know that they can get smokers onto the same kind of sea-saw treadmill that 'dieters' are on with the same kind of press exposure and advertising. It's a venal world we live in.

Thank you sojournerlumus for the advice  Afro Currently nicoteine free for my 3rd successive day. The cravings are bad but I fight it and yes I need to fill my smoking time with something else. Usually when  I got into my car to go to work I'd light up, now I find myself thinking, ok no more cigs, what the hell am I going to do.
I started reading as well, finished A clash of kings and more than halfway through A storm of swords so that helps to keep my mind occupied  Smiley

As I said earlier, I would like to lose weight as I am most probably 30 Kilograms over weight, once I lose weight I want to see if it improves  getting of my OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea) well that is my ambition, not to sleep with a machine and mask every night.

Once again thanks for the advice and support  far away hug

Attaboy! That's the spirit.  Now, calculate how long it used to take you to smoke cigarettes every day. It'll be 10 mins X No. cigs. I know you were probably doing something else for some of that time but the remainder was completely wasted time and is why you put the weight on - that and eating too much.
Now, an hour is not too much to afford  compared to that and can be wasted on an enjoyable walk instead. Start steady and work up to full stride, remember you're lugging a full rucksack's worth of useless flab at the beginning. It takes 10 mins for your body to get warmed through and up to speed and the rest is pure pleasure and accomplishment.
Get a map of your chosen area for figuring out walks and find some really pleasant places to give you visual enjoyment. It could be trees or birds or flowers or people you like watching. Every time you see something that interests, excites or intrigues you, your mind won't be on other things.
Maybe on a nice day you can take a sandwich with you and after 20-30 mins sit down outdoors for 10 mins and watch the world go by as you eat and then walk back the 20-30 mins. I think you'll have covered about 4 miles walking.
Or you might have found a gallery or something else that interests you on your map or when you're driving around and make that your target for the walk, but make it say a mile at least for a start and then explore farther afield as you get fitter and the pounds start to roll off.
After a while you'll enjoy the walks so much you'll miss them if you can't do it one day. That's when you've really cracked it - you've replaced one bad habit for a good one.
It's amazing what new things you notice about the place you live and work when you're on foot.

Several studies have stimulated doubt about the effectiveness of antidepressants. A 2002 study cited that the difference between antidepressants and placebo is close to negligible

what all one needs is good Physical exercise., Good food may be a sleeping tablet.. + active life..
    Quote
Most typical antidepressants have a delayed onset of action (2–6 weeks) and are usually administered for anywhere from months to years. Despite the name, antidepressants are often used to treat other conditions, such as anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, eating disorders, chronic pain, and some hormone-mediated disorders such as dysmenorrhea. Some of these uses are FDA-approved and some are off-label. Alone or together with anticonvulsants (e.g., Tegretol or Depakote), these medications can be used to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and substance abuse by addressing underlying depression. Also, antidepressants have been used sometimes to treat snoring and migraines.

I am so sorry to know your medical problems, but what you said is right .. all these third generation medication based on benzodiazapines  will get effected by nicotine intake by smoking or by patch..

You will be better of  NOT SMOKING., if you can  stop smoking ., what you are taking is this

There are better alternatives for that based on same chemical structure

and that is so-called Olanzapine/ Zyprexa

but it is very expensive medication.. In any case people should never take these things unless it is necessary and it should not be more than 5mgs a day

    Please take care of yourself...

Oops I didn't read that carefully... Al though what I said before is an established fact., but this carving for smoking is simply the side effect of of that drug., For e.g. if you used to love Chocolates., then with these drugs people eat more Chocolates., samething with  food.. people get very hungry for fatty food and they put on weight.,
