Eratosthenes was a Greek mathematician and geographer from Alexandria in Egypt (276-195 BC). He used measurements of the angle of the sun at two different places in Egypt to estimate the circumference of the Earth to be 39,690 kilometers (an error of less than 2%).

Scientists transcribed the words of the song 'Its A Small World After All' into the DNA of bacteria that is resistant to radioactivity, so that if there were a nuclear catastrophe, the message can be passed on to future intelligent life.

Just been checking out the BBC2 site, as their Origins of Us series has just started over here.

    Nifty factlets:

    - Your bones are as strong as granite in supporting weight. A block the size of a matchbox can support 9 tonnes.

    - An adult has fewer bones than a baby. We start life with 350, but they fuse together as we grow and we end up with only 206.

    - The brain of a newborn baby is only 1/4 of its full size, while those of other Great Apes are already half grown at birth.

    - Because of this, the 22 bones of your skull were not fused at birth and overlapped each other to fit through the birth canal.

    - You use 200 muscles with each step, but only 12 of these are in the leg.

ETA: Oh yeah, another interesting factlet. Even the first episode of this series, which only deals with the skeletal features, is enough to totally trash the idea that our ancestors evolved as vegetarians. Cheesy

I think the idea that our ancestors were vegetarians is the stupidest and most irrelevant argument pushed in support of ethical vegetarianism.

Me too. Always have thought that, but I've run into quite a few people who use it as one of their points.

However, it's not just ethical vegetarianism. Some people argue purely on the basis of supposed health benefits, and they claim that we should be vegetarians because we evolved as vegetarians. I've long though that was bullshit too, and the science is pretty conclusive now.

I think the whole our ancestors were vegetarian idea, come from the Garden of Eden, as I've heard some seventh day adventists state that humans weren't allowed to eat meat until after the whole Noah and his sons got off the ark thing.
  • Re: Did you know...

Not just that. Some people claimed that the anthropological/fossil evidence supported it. It was plausible at one stage, but not any more.

A lot of people think that vegetarianism will automatically make them healthy, so they stop eating meat and eat all sorts of junk food instead, then wonder why they've gained so much weight and become fatigued so easily.

The problem with being a vegetarian is that most cultures have meat as the main source of protein, so if you don't want to consume meat, you need to consciously search for alternatives. Just dropping meat isn't going to suddenly make you healthy.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

Paleoconservatives are a dying bread anyways.  We call them racists now.  The fact that once meat is removed you have to do some searching in order to find all the proteins you need to be healthy should be a pretty big indicator for vegetarians that something needed to supplement their diet.  It's not like cavemen could order from Whole Foods.

Did you know a person cannot taste food unless it is mixed with saliva. For example, if strong-tasting substance like salt is placed on a dry tongue, the taste buds will not be able to taste it. As soon as a drop of saliva is added and the salt is dissolved, however, a definite taste sensation results. This is true for all foods. Try it!

We can say this in different ways

"Evil triumphs when good people do nothing."

"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."

"When good men do nothing, they get nothing good done"
