    There's nothing funny about sexism. You think it's funny because you haven't experienced its oppressive force.

    And I should add that saying "mee-yow" to a girl for pointing out a sexist remark is quite sexist.

    This isn't a personal attack, but please be aware of the words you use. I see "bitch" and "whore" and other oppressive terms being thrown around by some guys here like they're meaningless terms, and that can alienate some people. It's unacceptable. One of the purposes of this forum is to be a safe virtual space for people living in oppressive environments. Don't take away from that.

    I have, as a mater of fact. But I really think you're going overboard here, I don't see how the joke was sexist in the slightest. It in no way implied superiority of one sex over another. Males and females alike can be whores. The only thing I suppose you could take issue with is that it implied that promiscuity was something to be looked down upon. But that isn't sexist. At all. I think you guys need to lighten up.

    Whether or not you say it for both men and women is irrelevant. 'Whore' is a term socially used to put women down, to put them in their place in a patriarchy. Men don't get called whores when they dress up. They don't get called catty when they speak up. They don't get called bitches when they fight for their rights.

    Just because that is true in some instances doesn't mean every instance of the word is sexist. It's a word. To jump down someone's throat for merely using a word doesn't help your cause, it only hurts it by giving that word more power. The joke here wasn't sexist.

    Words already have power. When you call someone a whore, you don't know what her experience with the word is. She might have been called a whore her entire life by people who didn't want her to stand up for herself, and by using that word, you'd be reminding her of and perpetuating her past experiences.

    If you want to use a word, make sure the person you use it on doesn't have an oppressive experience with it. And make sure no one listening/reading has either.

    Words only have as much power as you give them. If one is inclined to read so much into such a trivial matter, everything has the power to become incredibly offensive to someone, somewhere.

    Once again: the joke was not sexist, and the intention was not malevolent. This has gone far beyond what it ever should have been: a harmless, perhaps (at the most) slightly misguided remark, with the intention of being humorous.

    Look, words have socially constructed power. You can't go around calling black people niggers, because black people have historically been called niggers to put them in place in a racist society. Saying words have power if you give it to them is bullshit. You don't create the meaning of words, their meaning exists through their use in a society.

    A joke does not have to be intentionally sexist for it to be oppressive. I've already made my point, and now you're repeating yourself.

    Let's not get sidetracked here. I can remove my analogy and just say that words exist in a social context that needs to be taken into account, and a joke can have ramifications beyond its intentions.

    Considering you're never really on there much anymore, I don't think it's wise to make such sweeping generalizations. Chat has really cleaned up in recent months, and I don't think there's any need for anyone to feel uncomfortable or unwelcome there, at least on the front that has been mentioned here.
