When I went to prom, some people were dirty dancing and I dunno, it seemed so...like.....primitive (no offence to anybody)

Given that it is obviously one of the more primitive parts of our programming and has been around since sexual reproduction was invented sometime before the Cambrian, this is not surprising.

Why is this necessarily a bad thing?

Devious, treacherous, murderous, neanderthal, sub-human of the West. bunny

I don't knowww!!!! Fine, porn isn't necessarily bad. It might be, but if it is, I don't know why.

I still don't like it though.

    Hi everyone!

So this is a thread to discuss porn philosophically. So please keep it clean folks. Thank you! Smiley

K, so I think porn is bad. I don't know why. It's immoral though.

You mean you haven't come to actual reasons why but have a negative feeling towards it? That's understandable though you're going to have to rationalize it as that won't be good enough to anyone in debate.

Anyway, so I figure, most people here think it's okay because of consent, but I was wondering, does anybody know the implications of widespread porn use socially and emotionally? I just find it hard to believe that it doesn't affect a person psychologically and change their mindset. And if it does so negatively, shouldn't it be considered immoral regardless of consent? As in, I don't think consent should determine whether something is immoral or not, eg euthanasia....but I'm not really sure. Tongue

In what ways would it effect someone negatively? Are you speaking about porn in general or a specific hardcore porn? Kinda reminds me of what Ted Bundy use to go on about how pornography had a great deal of effect in he's murders.

If it effects one person negatively but the majority positively or neutral should it be considered immoral in the cost of the rest?

I also don't really know anything about the porn industry, but what motivates people to become porn stars?

And what's everyone here's 'philosophical' view on pornography?

Kay, thanks!!! Smiley Smiley And remember, no matter what you type, I'll be here judging! Tongue Hahaha. j/k

I don't care what consenting adults do but I do have a problem with government rules disallowing porn to be viewed by those under 21. All the while having sex is okay and no real age is put on it. Not that I have a problem with the latter only that it seems bizarre that you can't watch porn but could engage in the act itself.

Yeah, I know, that's why I didn't bother giving reasons. I know they'd all just be rationalising so why bother?

Well again if they are both aware of what's going to occur it's their responsibility. Though I do agree that certain acts are really degrading but yeah they don't seem to mind it.

    Positively? Positively how? :/

Well for example it could help relieve sexual urges a teen or anyone might have. It can even prevent some from acting out some fantasies they may have.

    Wellllllll, Wiki says:

    Quote from: Wiki
Feminists argue that, in most cases, prostitution is not a conscious and calculated choice. They say that most women who become prostitutes do so because they were forced or coerced by a pimp or by human trafficking, or, when it is an independent decision, it is generally the result of extreme poverty and lack of opportunity, or of serious underlying problems, such as drug addiction, past trauma (such as child sexual abuse) and other unfortunate circumstances

    So..yeah.........

Ok, so try breaking it down a bit.

Are you still at the "boys are icky" stage?

Are you just more or less repeating what you have been taught about attitudes to sex?

Do you find the whole idea of sex distasteful, and therefore extend that to "porn is bad"?

Is all porn automatically bad, or only some?

    Etc. Smiley

I do, and I still don't say porn is bad. Tongue

In regards to prostitution, in the 90's there was a divide in feminists on how to view porn and prostitution.  There were some who said that prostitution, by it's very nature, was harmful and there were others who thought that prostitution and pornography can have bad effects, but they can also have good effects as well.

As a more recent apostate I have yet to formulate an unbiased opinion on this topic without the influence of years of cultural and islamic indoctrination - but if I were to pick a side, I guess I would err on the side of freedom of choice. Nevertheless I wonder - as someone suggested earlier - whether this, along with the constant bombardment of how the ideal woman should look like by the media could lead to the promotion of the objectification of women, similar to how the hijab/burka do so in islamic societies?

When large scale excavations of Pompeii were undertaken in the 1860s, much of the erotic art of the Romans came to light, shocking the Victorians who saw themselves as the intellectual heirs of the Roman Empire. They did not know what to do with the frank depictions of sexuality, and endeavored to hide them away from everyone but upper class scholars.

It was not just the Romans, some of the early Muslim Caliphs were also into it. There are frescos of a naked woman from a palace of Caliph Al-Walid I (reigned 705 – 715 AD / 86-96 of the Arabian Era).

The hijab (niquaab and all the other coverings of women laws) takes away the right of woman to do what she wishes with her body.

A lot of Muslim scholars like to compare Muslim women to diamonds that has to be covered because they're so precious. Diamonds are objects, they are possessed by people (and in the case of comparing to women by men). Objectifying women comes in because it places focus on the appearances, focuses on her sexuality, she's a woman and so she will sexually arouse men etc and needs to be covered up.

No, its still focussing on her appearance, just the focus is shifted to covering her appearance up.
