    Egypt, its new Islamic government now seen as the Palestinians’ main protector, also said the Israeli “aggression” would end within hours. “The farce of the Israeli aggression will end today, Tuesday, and the efforts to reach a ceasefire between the Palestinians and Israelis will produce positive results within a few hours,” Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi said. Later, a spokesman qualified the president’s optimism, saying that Morsi “hopes there will be a settlement soon.

    Another 22 Palestinians were killed on Tuesday in attacks that also claimed the lives of two cameramen of the Hamas-owned Al-Aqsa TV station.  Netanyahu said that it was now up to Hamas, the Islamist movement which rules Gaza, to choose between peace and further bloodshed.

    “Our hand is outstretched in peace to those of our neighbours who want to make peace with us,” Israel’s rightwing premier said in a statement. “And the other hand is firmly grasping the sword of David.”...

     
    The rocket fired at Jerusalem crashed into an olive grove near Jabba village, in an attack claimed by the armed wing of Hamas, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the second such attempt to hit Jerusalem in five days.  Nobody was hurt but the sirens halted traffic and prompted people to urgently evacuate to bomb shelters.  But another rocket strike on in the Eshkol regional council killed a soldier, bringing the Israeli death toll since Wednesday to four, after three civilians were killed last Thursday.

     Clinton in urgent push for peace

    Netanyahu and his key ministers decided in a closed-door meeting late Monday to place “a temporary hold on a ground incursion to give diplomacy a chance to succeed,” a senior Israeli official told AFP. The move came as UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon travelled from Cairo to Jerusalem and urged both sides to stop their fire “immediately”.

    Hamas is understood to be seeking guarantees that Israel will stop its targeted killings, and end its blockade on the tiny coastal stretch of land, which is home to 1.6 million people.

Israel has launched hundreds of airstrikes, targeting rocket launching sites, weapons caches and homes of Hamas activists, as Palestinians fired hundreds of rockets at Israel. The six were killed on Tuesday afternoon in Gaza City's Sheik Radwan neighborhood.  Witnesses said a van stopped in the intersection, and four masked men pushed the six suspected informers out of the vehicle. Salim Mahmoud, 18, said the gunmen ordered the six to lie face down in the street and then shot them dead. Another witness, 13-year-old Mokhmen al-Gazhali, said the informers were killed one by one, as he mimicked the sound of gunfire. "They should have been killed in a more brutal fashion so others don't even think about working with the occupation (Israel)," said one of the bystanders, 24-year-old Ashraf Maher.

    One body was then tied by a cable to the back of a motorcycle and dragged through the streets. A number of gunmen on motorcycles rode along as the body was pulled past a house of mourning for victims of an Israeli airstrike.
     
    Hamas posted a sign on an electricity pole, naming the six alleged informers.

    In 2007  that  four days of fighting Hamas took control of the main north–south road and the coastal road. The Israeli government closed all check-points on the borders of Gaza in response to the violence. During the four days of intense fighting at least 116 people were killed.

    Those are well known incidents and there are plenty of minor killings around this Hamas/Fatah fighting..  

    Gaza Strip and its politics:

    The Gaza Strip acquired its current boundaries at the cessation of fighting in the 1948 war, confirmed by the Israel-Egypt Armistice Agreement on 24 February 1949.[4] Article V of the Agreement declared that the demarcation line was not to be an international border. The Gaza Strip continued to be occupied by Egypt. At first Gaza Strip was officially administered by the All-Palestine Government, established by the Arab League in September 1948. From the dissolution of the All-Palestine Government in 1959 until 1967, the Gaza Strip was directly administered by an Egyptian military governor.

    Israel captured and occupied the Gaza Strip in the Six-Day War in 1967.  Pursuant to the Oslo Accords signed in 1993, the Palestinian Authority became the administrative body that governed Palestinian population centres.  Israel maintained control of the airspace, territorial waters and border crossings apart from the land border with Egypt.  Israel unilaterally disengaged from Gaza in 2005. The Gaza Strip forms part of the Palestinian territories. Since July 2007, following the 2006 Palestinian legislative election and following the Battle of Gaza, Hamas has functioned as the de facto ruler in the Gaza Strip, forming an alternative Hamas Government in Gaza.

    In the 19th century, Gaza was among six soap-producing cities in Palestine, overshadowed only by Nablus. Its factories purchased qilw from merchants from Nablus and Salt in Jordan.[2] Gaza's port was eclipsed by the ports of Jaffa and Haifa, but it retained its fishing fleet.[3] Although its port was inactive, land commerce thrived because of its strategic location.     Many Gazans worked in the Israeli service industry while the border was open, but in the wake of Israel's 2005 disengagement plan, Gazans could no longer do so. According to OXFAM, Gaza suffered from serious shortages in housing, educational facilities, health facilities, infrastructure, and an inadequate sewage system, contributing to serious hygiene and public health problems.[ Food prices rose during the blockade, with wheat flour going up 34% and rice up 21%. The number of poor Gazans increased sharply, with 80% relying on humanitarian aid in 2008 compared to 63% in 2006. In 2007, households spent an average of 62% of their total income on food, compared to 37% in 2004. In a decade, the number of families depending on UNRWA food aid increased ten-fold.

    In August 2009, Hamas promised workers $100 each for Ramadan. Increasing prosperity has led to the widespread replacement of donkey carts with tuk-tuks.  According to the International Monetary Fund, the unemployment rate is falling. The economy of Gaza grew by 16% in the first half of 2010, almost twice as fast as the economy of the West Bank.[9]

    The European Union paid €420 million in aid to the Palestinian territories in 2001.  This was in addition to contributions by individual member states. This included €55 million form Germany, €67 million from France, and £63.6 million (about €76 million) from Great Britain in 2007 alone.  Donation levels have since increased, with the United States and the European Union giving $7.7 billion in 2008-2010.[10]

    In 2011 Gaza's economy increased by 27% while unemployment fell to 29%, its lowest in a decade. In 2012, Qatar donated 400 million dollars towards construction projects in the Gaza Strip...


    With all those problems.. instead of building schools, educating the kids.. if needed sending them abroad  to other Muslim and non Muslim countries,   for the past 10 years these grown up idiots along with foolish leaders making silly fire crackers and proudly saying Oh MY FIRE CRACKER went all the way to Jerusalem.. Tel Aviv.  Those Israeli blockades had terrible consequences on kids, women  and old folks  ... Before Hamas fought Fatah and took over Power in Gaza at least some people were going in to Israel every day and getting paid for their work. Now there is nothing to do except make babies..And other side of the border Egyptians themselves are on begging bowls.,   Now no  one in  Gaza has any work , anything to do except  wait for donations. On top of all  that, our  Islamic heroes take part of those donations  build some fire crackers  and  Islam in brain with Jihad.. Jihad slogans fire those fire crackers at Israelis..  These fools and their leaders   don't even think for a second, what kind of troubles they are  putting  those ho want to live peacefully  in Gaza..  If you don't have resources to fight and win  STOP FIGHTING YOU FOOLS..    The times of Muslim brothelhood.. Islamic Al-queda  heroes,   telling Saladin stories to children to brain wash them  is over at the end of 20th century.. The dawn of mass communications in 21st century  moves all religions in to dustbins...   No one cares about silly books stupid religions you fools.. Indeed that is effect of BROTHELHOOD..      I think that at this point in time and maybe before. I don't think that Israel didn't 'stole' the land,  I think they out-developed their Palestinian neighbors which is why their population grew out of control, people moved in and they had the need to build more houses. Because I honestly don't know how (unless someone educates me otherwise) that tiny population of Jewish people was allowed to be in 'Palestine' and then suddenly grew out of control. YES America and UN put them there, but their numbers were so small and insignificant that Palestinians didn't even care. When they first moved in the Palestinians could have probably easily kicked them out or beat the shit of them, but they didn't until it was too late. I'm confused.

    And Look Gaza shares a border with Egypt, everyone is acting like the only way in Gaza is through Israel. Then how the hell are they getting all these rockets if they are under this terrible siege being starved. If they can smuggle rockets it means they have the means to get other more useful things into the country. So I think the blockade is bullshit since they've clearly found a way around it. And rockets and rocket material aren't small light weight goods. I'm confused

    And yes AID has been denied by Israel, but only because like I said it's been tightly controlled. Not just anyone or any unauthorized organization can give aid to Gaza. Which is different from saying, NO aid gets through. Aid does get through but it has to be carefully checked and the organization/ country giving it needs go through Israel's security. What should be disputed is how tightly controlled it is. Many other countries also check aid as it goes through to make sure, 1. it is aid 2. it goes to the people and not put on the market.

    Also everyone says Palestine is oppressed, but Israel does not run nor is responsible for Gaza. How come no one is shouting free the 'West Bank' or the West Bank is oppressed. The West bank doesn't seem to be engaging in a war with Israel even though they are a 'territory' of Israel and is mostly Palestinian, and live in horrible conditions as well.

    I also don't get how everyone is crying about this blockade, then supporting the shooting of missiles at the nation you want to have open trade and travel with through their borders. I'm confused by this logic.

    well...they you can't say they didn't try.
    A lot of the 'stealing land' business has to do with the expansion of Israel after winning defensive wars and maintaining buffer zones.
    People point to maps of Israel over the years and highlight that it has grown. That is usually sufficient for many to 'prove' that they stole land.

    The red blobs mark land which the fund has bought.


    I think this is an interesting thing that is never mentioned.

    People point to maps of Israel over the years and highlight that it has grown. That is usually sufficient for many to 'prove' that they stole land.

    They have definitely stolen some land. What's really annoying is that they keep trying to steal more.

    Yes? Because buying land in legal transactions is something that should never be done? Exactly what is interesting about it?

    Incidentally, something that is often forgotten is that Jews didn't just suddenly waltz into the area and start stealing land. They started by buying it in legal sales pre-WW2, which they and anyone else are quite entitled to do.

    Interesting enough listening to the leader of Israel and the leader of Hamas on their commentary about the conflict.

    I have to kind of laugh a little inside because the Hamas leader is insisting that they have won and Israel came out of it with nothing except killing children and damaging buildings and Israel's goal was to break Palestinian's cause and they are forever united.  Hamas fired tons of rockets, and did barely any damage in the name of defending themselves. Which to me seems like a waste of money and resources. Their generals have been killed, and there was one Israeli soldier casualty on the border. Got a rocket as far as Tel Aviv, but little damage. And Israel was unnecessarily ruthless like it has always been in it's military response on Gaza, and Hamas had to plead with Egypt to get Israel to stop completely destroying them. And only because Israel has decided to stop, that they are celebrating. I don't understand what Gaza is celebrating, that their sworn enemy has shown mercy and stopped? There is still is much work to do to ensure safety for the people there against Israel.

    Israel, Hamas agree to Gaza truce

They include an end to Hamas missile fire from Gaza at Israel and an Israeli commitment to stop targeting senior Hamas leaders for assassination.

    The deal also calls for Israel to open the crossings into and out of Gaza - the details of which are to be thrashed out in the next 24 hours.

    Ceasefire agreement
        Israel should stop all hostilities in the Gaza Strip's land, sea and air, including incursions and targeting of individuals.
        All Palestinian factions shall stop all hostilities from the Gaza Strip against Israel, including rocket attacks and all attacks along the border.
        Opening the crossings and facilitating the movements of people and transfer of goods and refraining from restricting residents' free movements and targeting residents in border areas and procedures of implementation shall be dealt with after 24 hours from the start of the ceasefire.
        Other matters as may be requested shall be addressed.

    Implementation mechanisms
        Setting up the zero hour for the ceasefire understanding to enter into effect.
        Egypt shall receive assurances from each party that the party commits to what was agreed upon.
        Each party shall commit itself not to perform any acts that would breach this understanding. In case of any observations Egypt as the sponsor of this understanding shall be informed to follow up.

    TBH the Israelis were being unnecessarily restrictive in what they allowed through. Given the history of the situation, I think Israel is quite entitled to run checks on anything going into or coming out of Gaza, but they should free things up as much as they safely can. .What Israel should do is say they'll open the crossings to all reasonable supplies (ie: not weapons, etc) as long as there are no atttacks on Israeli property or people. If there are any attacks, the deal's off.

    That should make life easier for the average people in Gaza, and gives Hamas a fair chance to show they can be trusted to actually want peace (have my doubts there, of course).

    Yay cease-fire! I agree Israel needs to ease their borders. They are really paranoid (with good reason) as they have had suicide bombings at the border in the past and see every civilian as a potential bomber, children, woman and man. I hope Hamas and the people are careful. Don't give Israel a reason to close the borders again. And good for Israel for showing restraint, they could have easily bomb the shit out of Hamas in 2 weeks and the death-toll would have been way worst. people in Israel are disappointed over the cease-fire and says they should have 'finished the job'. An unpopular decision but the right one.

Someone please explain to me the situation Gazans hate Israel so much and call them their sworn enemy, yet they seem to really desperate to need to have goods move in an out from there, as well as people. Why? What about Egypt? If Gazans hate Israel so much why can't they build their economy through Egypt and trade with their border? I mean they are all brothers under Islam and Egypt says they support Palestinians? But I'm wondering why doesn't Gaza forget the Israel border and rebuild through Egypt? Just like Israel doesn't want anything to do with them, why can't they just leave Israel alone. Israel moved all their settlements out and gave them Gaza, so what's the problem now? Can Gaza live without Israel, or do they need Israel to survive?

    Gaza is not a sovereign country the way, say Australia, is a sovereign country; it's still occupied by Israel, and as such Israel does have something of a responsibility to them. I honestly think Israel should just give them statehood. I doubt Palestine will amount to anything other than an Islamist cesspit or tinpot dictatorship (have they had any elections since 2006?) if it becomes a sovereign state but they will no longer have the Jews to blame their woes on.

    But Gaza is controlled by Hamas even thought it isn't an official state, Israel has already been mostly hands off I imagine with most of the governing so what's the problem. Well that still goes back to my question. Is statehood in the best interest of the people, or do they need Israel? And how is statehood going to benefit them? I don't think unless a less violent government is in place I can see why Israel wouldn't grant them statehood even though they should rightfully have one. Then Israel and Gaza will be like how Pakistan is with India. :/ A new seemingly failed tiny state with corruption and extremist leaking in. Just having a state for the sake of having power of the people, usually religiously motivated.

    Well from what I understand, opinion in Israel is divided. The other night on the news, and IDF soldier was saying he hoped the ground offensive didn't go ahead, because he didn't think it would be the right way to handle the situation. There have also been protests in some Israeli cities against the attacks on Gaza.

    Egypt doesn't trust Hamas and the other Islamist groups in Gaza either. Egypt regards them as as much of a threat to Egpyt as they are to Israel. Consequently, Egypt has had a very tough border policy. Gaza used to rely on exports to Israel for a large part of its economy. Since the border restrictions were tightened, businesses in Gaza have lost a lot of revenue.
