    Right. A good doctor will prescribe the medication along with a contingency plan to help the person deal with their problems in their lives so that eventually they won't need the medicine anymore or as much.

    Im not here to say that they shouldnt use them, but it's just not the best way to deal with it.

    I never met a doctor that good. Decades ago, I worked for a veterinarian who was trying to keep his patients on the drugs, and prescribe more, because of the kickbacks he was getting. Stereos, TVs, etc.
    I know there is supposed to be more control for humans, but I am suspicious. No doctor ever tried to get me off an antidepressant, they just added more.
    I haven't had any for years, I don't need them.

    You never know. You might be the best. If not you, who? If you can't pinpoint who is, then you might have a claim going. That's my theory. Maybe whoever is the best has to rotate their title each hour. It might be your hour. Give it a chance.

    The good thing about living in a country with universal health care is that doctors don't need to bleed sick people dry. Ahh, universal health care, where you're not charged for getting cancer or hit by a car. Resist it at all costs. Like atheism, it is of the devil.

    They don't like the idea of healthcare not being a business anymore. I can talk out of my ass about all the reasons why that is, but it's been far too long since I've worked in the field to conjure up a legitimate argument that is still relevant today.  Universal healthcare and universal higher education seems to be comparable to contracting HIV to people in the USA.

    I am sure it is much more efficient to make money off the sick than to cure them. I mean, if they get well, how can you get any more cash out of them?

    We should just stay sick and uneducated. I don't mind being uneducated. I don't know what I am missing, right? Oh wait. Maybe I am missing out on being a productive member of society with increased cash flow that would "trickle down" and improve the economy. Look at that. A Republican concept, isn't it? Like Reagan?

    Well over here it's paid by taxes. And doctors make a shitload. Wish I was on 100000+ a year like some of them.

    I have known car salesmen who make more than doctors. In fact, I knew a car salesman who, upon being told the doctor he was selling a car to made more than him, whipped out his paycheck (total for the year is on the stub), flashed it at the doctor, and told the doctor to move along and buy a car from someone who cares how much more he makes than the rest of us.

    So I've been put on escitalopram now — the health services would refuse to see me if I didn't consent to medical treatment. I thought I was going back on it on Monday, but apparently they prescribed me a sufficient amount of tablets until I next see them in a few weeks time.

    It's only been a couple of days but I'm struggling to enjoy music. It just feels like meaningless noise.

    I'm honestly tempted to pick the herb back up again, negative side effects notwithstanding. if I can't feel anything from music then i struggle to see how I will enjoy anything in life.

    I have been told that there is an initial adjustment period, of two to four weeks. Could it be that this side effect will lessen after this first few weeks?

    I doubt it. Music is so inextricably tied to darkness for me that it actually makes sense that I wouldn't be able to enjoy it if the meds are curtailing dark thoughts.

    schizo- I am so sorry that you're having such a difficult time. If you don't mind a stranger's small advice:

    As others have said, keep seeking extra opinions from your provider, or, if you can, seek secondary opinions from other physicians, especially if this one isn't doing it for you. My eldest sister was clinically depressed for many years to an extreme degree, and in order to get her to a better place, it took years of trying one prescription or combination or the other, and a whole collection of physicians. But, today, she is doing so well that it kind of makes the rest of us feel bad in comparison.

    Don't force it if something you used to enjoy feels meaningless. Try to find something new that speaks to you in the moment. And, if you haven't stopped already, though, my best advice: stop debating Islam! That's going into the abyss; that depressed me even as a Muslim. Nowadays, if I'm going to get in a real deep debate about religion, it's like going to the town hall to do paperwork: I have to brace myself, prepare for my soul to be sucked out, be ready to be stuck there for hours, say some encouraging words in the mirror and then shuffle grimly into battle. It may not fix your problems to remove yourself from those encounters, but it should definitely provide a relief and help you heal faster.
