I'm straight but even I would rather marry a guy, because they're not as naggy and demanding.

Singapore is a corrupt city state where rich people go to flee taxes and justice, and where people are brutally punished for harmless behavior.  Why would anyone want to emulate that?

You are right about singapore. It has 1.2 trillion debt too. But it hides it's disasters.

And it's a one party autocratic state ruled by kleptocrats that beats the shit out of you for minor offenses...

Think of it like a more right-wing version of China.

It's legal in at least one country in every populated continent and it's spreading fast:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:World_marriage-equality_laws.svg

Even in once bulwarks of social conservatism like Latin America are day by day legalizing it (places like Argentina and Uruguay are becoming more socially progressive than the United States Tongue).  It's simply a generational issue where the youth of the world are more and more accepting of it.

I know why it is illegal here in BD. A gay couple once tried to get married. To do that one of them disguised and tried to pass off as a woman. But they got caught and were given a good beating. One of the friends of my FB friend who had posted this commented that they were the cancer of the society and should be killed by being thrown off a high roof! Shameless devil finmad! After that which government would want to be the cause of "cancer" and be eradicated in the aforementioned manner?

I think I actually heard about that.

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

It used to be very tolerant to other religions like Hinduism. There is a saying in Bangla that there are thirteen festivals in the twelve months of the year. All these are Hindu festivals. But that doesn't mean that the Muslims weren't devout. They were and they also celebrated Hindu festivals. But sadly after the rise of the Islamic terrorists, even the mass of ordinary people had changed:(. That's just my observation.

No I understand that and I wasn't offended. Well the Bangladeshi became more fanatic about their religion and intolerant towards non-Muslims. The death of the liberal minded university professor Dr. Azad,, the destruction of Buddhist pagodas and harassment of the people of the faith, murder of the atheist bloggers and the list goes on. My personal life was also affected. Previously I used to wear Western dresses but didn't face much criticisms. But all that changed after the terrorists' rise. One of them includes that Dr. Naik. I am not exaggerating when I say that in my last semester of the university, 98% of the girls in my class became hijabis. Even girls like me rarely come out during the day in dresses other than the traditional or Islamic ones. Whenever I go out without a stole, the women stare at me as if I am a stinky cow dung! And they occasionally ask me to cover my bosom on the roads. I call it 'the Naik Effect'.

Now I really dislike the guy, and his likes, even more. I'm sorry that you have to go through that Rubaya!

I have great sympathy for poor countries and of course wish to free them from exploitation, but that being said, countries like Bangladesh have a problem with religious fundamentalism and social conservatism in their internal culture.  Whats the best way to alleviate this, in your opinion?

It's OK Cornflower. Everything will change when I will go to my dreamland USA in the future. I just hope that it doesn't change. @EzraJT, I really don't have any idea. Our education is secular, but people just doesn't want to change their minds. We are progressing but we are just fossilised about our religion. I remember that maybe last year, our prime minister wanted to establish a law that gave equal shares of inheritance to all children, regardless of their sex. But she had to draw back not only because of the fundamentalists but also for the intelligentsias! People commit adultery, fornication, drink and partake in interests; but when it comes to religious tolerance we are lagging behind. All religious festivals in our country are being kept under tight security, especially the non-Muslim ones.

The USA isn't a dreamland, in fact it's quite harsh compared to Canada or Western Europe.  Very hard to get into compared to Canada as well.

Does Bangladesh need more education and economic opportunities you think?

Oh Yeezevee Cheesy! Compared to my country it is. I don't tell anyone but I consider it as my own. I am it's harshest critic because of this. Well the more the opportunities the better. But currently we have a lot compared to the past. But if people doesn't want to accept religious tolerance, all the secular education will go down the drain.

I guess its a symptom of the general rise in Islamic fundamentalism around the Middle East and South Asia.

Rubaya, I think this Islamic trend is universal, worldwide. For every progressive mosque that goes up in Western countries, I estimate triple that in traditional or Salafi masjids get built.
I wish it were limited to one country, but it is not.

Makes sense.  Both Saudi Arabia and the US spent billions promoting Islamic fundamentalism in the 70s and 80s.

I have read a small of Nasrin's 'Ko'. It was written there that her dad used to ask her not to wear jewelleries because men didn't do that. The author also complained that in BD the doctors stitch the skin of an unmarried female patient, in a manner that doesn't leave any scars, so that it doesn't stand in the way of marriage! There's a doctor in my country who had first brought breast lifting surgery here. Even that modern guy says that I shouldn't do liposuction because I still haven't married and that I am a woman Roll Eyes.
