    Any believer who comes onto this site feels the darkness and decadence.

    that's not this site, that's the whole world for believers like you - everything is darkness and decadence.

    To the rest of humanity, what you see as darkness, is light.

    That is an amazing poem Jedi

    http://www.patheos.com/blogs/daylightatheism/2008/11/poetry-sunday-xix/

    From The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam
    The bird of life is singing on the bough
    His two eternal notes of “I and Thou”—
    O! hearken well, for soon the song sings through,
    And, would we hear it, we must hear it now.

    The bird of life is singing in the sun,
    Short is his song, nor only just begun,—
    A call, a trill, a rapture, then—so soon!—
    A silence, and the song is done—is done.

    Yea! What is man that deems himself divine?
    Man is a flagon, and his soul the wine;
    Man is a reed, his soul the sound therein;
    Man is a lantern, and his soul the shine.

    Would you be happy! hearken, then, the way:
    Heed not To-morrow, heed not Yesterday;
    The magic words of life are Here and Now—
    O fools, that after some to-morrow stray!

    Were I a Sultan, say what greater bliss
    Were mine to summon to my side than this,—
    Dear gleaming face, far brighter than the moon!
    O Love! and this immortalizing kiss.

    To all of us the thought of heaven is dear—
    Why not be sure of it and make it here?
    No doubt there is a heaven yonder too,
    But ’tis so far away—and you are near.

    Men talk of heaven,—there is no heaven but here;
    Men talk of hell,—there is no hell but here;
    Men of hereafters talk, and future lives,—
    O love, there is no other life—but here.

    Look not above, there is no answer there;
    Pray not, for no one listens to your prayer;
    Near is as near to God as any Far,
    And Here is just the same deceit as There.

    But here are wine and beautiful young girls,
    Be wise and hide your sorrows in their curls,
    Dive as you will in life’s mysterious sea,
    You shall not bring us any better pearls.

    Allah, perchance, the secret word might spell;
    If Allah be, He keeps His secret well;
    What He hath hidden, who shall hope to find?
    Shall God His secret to a maggot tell?

    So since with all my passion and my skill,
    The world’s mysterious meaning mocks me still,
    Shall I not piously believe that I
    Am kept in darkness by the heavenly will?

    The Koran! well, come put me to the test—
    Lovely old book in hideous error drest—
    Believe me, I can quote the Koran too,
    The unbeliever knows his Koran best.

    And do you think that unto such as you,
    A maggot-minded, starved, fanatic crew,
    God gave the Secret, and denied it me?—
    Well, well, what matters it! believe that too.

    Old Khayyám, say you, is a debauchee;
    If only you were half so good as he!
    He sins no sins but gentle drunkenness,
    Great-hearted mirth, and kind adultery.

    But yours the cold heart, and the murderous tongue,
    The wintry soul that hates to hear a song,
    The close-shut fist, the mean and measuring eye,
    And all the little poisoned ways of wrong.

    So I be written in the Book of Love,
    I have no care about that book above;
    Erase my name, or write it, as you please—
    So I be written in the Book of Love.

    On Omar Khayyam

    Quote
    The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam
    Duration: 43 minutes
    First broadcast: Thursday 22 May 2014
    Melvyn Bragg and his guests discuss the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. In 1859 the poet Edward FitzGerald published a long poem based on the verses of the 11th-century Persian scholar Omar Khayyam. Not a single copy was sold in the first few months after the work's publication, but after it came to the notice of members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood it became enormously influential. Although only loosely based on the original, the Rubaiyat made Khayyam the best-known Eastern poet in the English-speaking world. FitzGerald's version is itself one of the most admired works of Victorian literature, praised and imitated by many later writers.

    Reading this I must note the similarity of the OP to a Mills and Boon Happy Ever After story or the classic myth of the white wedding in church, family etc.

    Is there a dearth of fantasy fiction in Islamic countries?

    I think there is. You know, that is a fantastic question. Science fiction would sure be a helpful thing in encouraging creative and critical thinking skills.
    Some time ago I read a publisher's lament that very few books become international, out of the vast number published. For some reason, books tend to stay within the shores they were originally published in.
    When I was in Abu Dhabi the English books were horribly expensive in new shops. You could tell they were there for the tourists. I never saw any in the souk.
    I hope that has changed.

    As controversial as it may seem, the lack of creativity inherent within the Islamic model leads to the stagnation and the retardation of the Muslim mind. One way in which we solve problems is by imagining different/similar scenarios and exploring competing ideas and see which works best. Also, there's nothing wrong with escapism. It is a cathartic exercise and can be healthy. Need I google and produce the volumes of research and journal articles that have been written which prove beyond certainty that all things creative - yes, even video games and movies - stimulate the mind and are essential for developing and maturing of a criitical, well adjusted mind that is able to navigate through the complexities of modern life? There are plenty!

    Islam either prevents or limits all forms of creativity, especially the arts, thus robbing us of our humanity. It claims to have a monopoly on all things by prescribing ancient solutions to (post)modern problems without allowing the people to doubt or challenge its authority. In the Islamic model there is no philosophy for the sake of philosophy, no artistic liscence, no music, no sculptures, no science fiction, no romantic poetry - or any poetry that does not praise the Islamic state - no parodies save for lampooning the infidels, no fashion and certainly no freedom of expression of any sort that would call into question the sovereignty of Allah over all.  Can you conceive of a more pathetic system than this?

    Weight

    Choice of subject, like choice of lover, is an intimate decision.

    Decision, the moment of saying yes, is prompted by something deeper; recognition. I recognise you; I know you again, from a dream or another life, or perhaps even from a chance sighting in a café, years ago.

    These chance sighting, these portents, these returns, begin the unconscious connection with the subject, an unconscious connection that waits for an ordinary moment of daylight to show its face.

    When I was asked to choose a myth to write about, I realised I had chosen already. The story of Atlas holding up the world was in my mind before the telephone call had ended. If the call had not come, perhaps I would never have written the story, but when the call did come, that story was waiting to be written.

    http://www.jeanettewinterson.com/book/weight/

    Mo riding a horse to Jerusalem would seem to be a wonderful example for a fiction writer to reimagine...

    Isn't it almost scifi already?

    The Islamisms we see are made for and by utopians who prefer their utopias as models of order, where joy is to be found in obedience. Such trends, I'm inclined to suspect, were previously largely confined to jurists.

    This brings me to my own hypothesis: if most fervent Islamists do not apparently display anything but a mass failure of imagination, it may well be because, to them, there is probably precious little good left to imagine. There is, however, plenty to fear, which would suggest an obvious outlet for such imaginations; in this context, a lot of fiqh might be read as a historical catalogue of neuroses..

    Disagree. I actually did not find her very polite. Articulate, sure, but that does not a polite person make.

    She's the one who sought us out, who came to us, who decided she was going to talk at us for a minute, say everything she wanted to say and then fuck off at lightning speed so that she didn't have to actually afford us the decency of engaging in conversation like a mature adult would, explaining that we aren't going to be friends and it was worthless to engage with us in the first place.

    I think most of us repaid her rudeness with more than enough kindness, but it's absurd to demand that in her self-imposed absence we should be more generous and keep from pointing out the obvious flaws of the nonsense she wrote lest we be accused of ganging up on the ghost of the OP.

    'Hate'?

    Could you please specify the hate? There are a mixture of voices in CEMB. Many of them are polite (Quod, Yeez, Three, Cornflower and MODs come to mind) whereas some of us adopt a more sarcastic/challenging tone depending upon the subject matter and the tone of the OP. There are of course some voices in between, but no hate at all.

    If anything, the OP outright challenged us and made claims about the reasons why some of us may have left Islam whilst regurgitating the same dawaghanda many of us have been subjected to for many years. Read the OP again please and perhaps that may inform your opinions especially the part in which she decides not to engage in any debate to justify her views. It is, as one member politely put it, 'driveby dawah'.

    Viking women had more power and rights than some Muslim women have today

    Also, before the arrival of Europeans, many aboriginal tribes in the Americas were matrilineal and women had the real power - only women were qulaified to be chiefs - some tribes still are.
