    And apparently this is where the madness started. So anyone know the veracity of this story, or do muslims believe otherwise?
    I had not heard of this until recently.

    Is this blessing then only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? We say that faith was counted to Abraham as righteousness.

    Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said "The Prophet) Abraham circumcised himself after he had passed the age of eighty years and he circumcised himself with an adze."
     

    Abu Hurayra said,

    "Ibrahim, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was circumcised when he was 120 years old. Then he lived eighty years after that."

    so  the story of adze goes like this....

    Ibrahim (originally Abraham, original name Avram, not sure how the Quran butchered this name the way it did--many theories about this one) almost certainly never existed. The vast majority opinion of biblical scholarship is that the Torah (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, & Deuteronomy) was written by reactionary Jewish priests/scholars living in the Babylonian exile period and thus more than 2000 years removed from the events the claim to describe. Abraham was a pious legend whose antiquity could not be much more than 1000 years before the exile (judging from how the story talks of camels domesticated in Egypt, which were not around in the 3000's). We can say with 99.9% certainly that no such figure ever existed. The Quran and Hadith stories are of course based on this same mythical character but 4000 years after the fact, so even less reliable. All of the midrashic Jewish, Christian, and Islamic material about him, such as this charming story, are only bunk built upon bunk.

    Preach on CJ.  It goes to show how depressingly uncritical the field of religious studies is that Abraham was taken as a historical figure by so many scholars for so long.

    And don't even get me started on Abu Lahab and Abu Jahl.  A six year old would see through that one.  Yet to this day most scholars seem to think he was historical.  It's flat-out astonishing.

    it really is, especially since in Arabic jokes if you want to say "oh he's got such a big beard" you'll call someone "abu al-la7iya" id est "father of the beard." It's not any big secret that this is a common convention in Arabic.

    But I guess I phrased my question wrong. What I meant to ask was whether muslims believe in this story or not. Because the story in itself is quite crazy. 80 year old senile person butchers himself with a stone axe, and people are doing the same (thankfully not using axes) to their children, in this day and age.

    On a similar note, was Muhammad himself circumcised, whats the story on that one? Some claim there is no proof of that.

    It's hard to say whether or not he was. His movement appears to have been some type of "Arian" (id est low-christological and/or non-trinitarian) Christian movement, but at the same time it was highly judaeic or judaeizing. So as to the penis of the prophet, I could see the argument being made either way.

    As to mainstream Muslim belief, I have never heard of this before. I don't doubt there's a Hadith somewhere or other for this, as there are tons of those crazy bits floating around, but as to whether or not mainstream Sunni Islam accepts this as true (or whether it's just 1 or more particular madhaahib that accept it) you would be better served sending an email to ask the mufti lol.

    Makes you wonder how freakish his penis was that he could circumcise himself with an axe. I'm picturing something the length and look of an empty sleeve.
