Looks like no coalition this time..   suprised by the result, labour probably lost most of their scottish and english working class voters to snp and ukip.

There's no such thing as a perfect party or half-perfect party. You go with the lesser fo two evils.

Anyway, it seems like the Conservatives can thank the SNP for their (possible) victory atm.  finmad

It shows you just how stupid the nationalism movement is when a 20 year old student gets voted in over a veteran.

    '
Even with SNP seats, Labour would still loose.

But yeah, Douglas Alexander was Shadow Foreign Secretary, while she is a... politics student yet to finish Uni.

I'm no expert on UK politics, but it seems to me that the Lib Dems were an experiment for the people who voted for them, a risk they were willing to take and see how things go. They don't have a solid support base the way the Tories (and Labour) do. And given the way Clegg quickly turned into Cameron's lapdog, it's not a surprise that the people who voted for them realized they might've made a mistake.

^ and poor Ed miliband, especially after all the personal hate campaigns he has had to deal with.  Anyway, if it wasn't for the emergence of SNP in Scotland, Labour would probably have had the majority vote, as most of Scotland used to vote labour.

Me too - I thought they did a fairly good job during the last 4 years. But it seems they have taken most of the blame - plus of course breaking their promise not to raise tuition fees I think is still bitterly remembered.

I also feel sorry for Ed Miliband as he has been ruthlessly vilified by the Murdoch press - we really should do something about that disgusting man, it's outrageous  that he is allowed to get away with such dirty games.

At the end of the day I don't really have a problem with Cameron - I feel he's done a decent job over the last five years.

My only concern is for the NHS - I hope he stops breaking it up.

Cameron has probably broken the United Kingdom by trotting out the dangers of an SNP backed Labour party. As an election winning tactic it was a master-stroke but if I was a Scottish person that had voted against Scottish independence I would now be regretting my vote.

Cameron has had an easy ride with a nicely compliant Liberal party backing him. He now has a tiny majority and the game has changed. I predict a hard time for him from the Conservative right just like John Major.

It's the first past the post system. Sometimes the Liberals do well because people vote for them in order to keep one of Tories/Labour out of government in their constituency "tactical voting". Sometimes they get squeezed because someone else gets the protest vote (UKIP?). In this election people were afraid of a Labour minority government backed by the Scottish National Party so they went with conservative. The leader of the Labour party (Miliband) is entirely lacking in charisma and has a risible personality. If Labour had a competent leader they would have won easily (a lot of people that were afraid of the SNP would have been pretty happy with a Labour majority government).

I'm actually sad to see milliband go, even though he didn't have leadership qualities, he's only lost because SNP wiped out almost every labour seat in Scotland, wasn't exactly a fair vote in the end.

Yep, and that's gonna be the big change now for the future.

Labour has generally been the number two party - now without Scotland they are going to struggle to ever get a majority in the future.

I've got no sympathy at all for Clegg and his mates . They sold their souls for the trappings of power and helped the tories carry on destroying what's left of the NHS and welfare state and turning UK into a zero hours franchise.
Even the likes of the highly regarded Vince Cable have disgraced themselves. The reason the electorate have punished them more than tories is we all know what they stand for - the LDs are supposed to be different. They were desperate for a seat at the table but they were there as waiters and dish washers , not equals and none of them cared enough to walk away
The only one I feel for is Charlie Kennedy , who does actually seem to have principles and has had to watch the party he helped build up traded away for ministerial salaries and hollow prestige
There is also the issue of them changing the law to ensure 5 year terms , strange from a party which has always claimed a more representative parliament as one of their main goals
I do feel sorry for Ed Milliband  There are a lot of problems with the Labour Party but he's a decent type and it's depressing that so many people still seem to prefer a self interested smoothie with an eton education to someone with principles.  I'm afraid this will send the Labour Party running back to Mandelson et al
Oh , and Yeezeevee  - Mr Galloway isn't a cat anymore. He's a LION. Don't go upsetting him , his lawyers know where you live

          Charisma ?
      Hitler had charisma
      Putin has charisma.
       Idi Amin had charisma
Boris Johnson has charisma  ( god help us , he's obviously going to be in charge soon)
Charisma might be a good criteria for choosing TV presenters , but it shouldn't be the main qualification for government. And personally I think Milliband's much more likeable than Cameron , Clegg and Osborne

Yeez, you're pretty vocal about how much in favour of democracy you are. How democratic does this look...
Conservative (36.7% of votes cast) = 326 seats.
Labour (30.5% of votes cast) = 231 seats.
Liberal Democrats (7.8% of votes cast) = 8 seats
UK Independence Party (12.7% of votes cast) = 1 seat
Scottish National Party (4.8% of votes cast) = 56 seats
Green Party (3.8% of votes cast) = 1 seat
Plaid Cymru - Wales Independence Party (0.6% of votes cast) = 3 seats
"Others" - Sinn Fein, DUP, etc (2.5% of votes cast) = 19 seats

I'm am so depressed and gutted right now.

For anyone who doesn't get UK politics, we have just elected cu&ts to run the country, who were born with silver spoons up their bottoms, who went to the best public schools, who feel they have a divine right to rule over the rest of us, and who are gleeful at the extended opportunity to fuck the public sector completely, to pander to the rich even more, to completely fuck the disabled and the disadvantaged, and to enforce more unnecessary austerity that will stifle our growth and actually make our debt worse. Things couldn't get any better really. Great day.

In truth, the election was lost to the (partial) left, the moment an insecure, awkward and previously bullied individual took the opportunity to stab his brother in the back five years ago. Let's hope we rebuild with more thought.

    I'm so grieving.

Your list is selective, you could have included Aneurin Bevan, Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt in it as well. Like it or not, weirdness and likeability don't win elections. Pretty much everyone disliked Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair as I recall. All the people you list above led their countries, charisma is a pre-requisite. Cameron has very little and Miliband has negative charisma.

First off thank you because I had absolutely no idea what anyone was talking about or what happened.

Secondly, my condolences. I'm old enough to remember Bush's reelection so I feel your pain.

Cameron has already said he won't be leader of the party at the next election. The seat is being kept warm for Boris. British politics however, has a way of not letting people achieve what they might. The person most expected to win party leadership often doesn't manage it.
