     OP - August 22, 2015, 07:24 PM

So, like, whether or not you agree that the release of people's private information from a hack as happened with Ashley Madison, and whether or not you think it's a good idea for there to exist a site where people can seek extra-marital relations....I think we can all agree that the fallout is hilarious.

Two big people I've seen named so far:
Josh Duggar--Former (or soon to be former) head of the anti-gay hate group Family Research Council's non-profit political action arm (FRC listing by the Southern Poverty Law Center, who monitor hate groups in America: https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/group/family-research-council ). Josh Duggar is also notable for having confessed to molesting children when he was a teenager, including his own sisters; he was not punished because his parents covered it up.

Hamza Tzortzis -- An old favorite, the Muslim Ray Comfort basically, only slightly more people conscious. Anyway, here's his statement on it: https://www.facebook.com/HamzaAndreasTzortzis/posts/1041944892482611

Highlights: "The first transaction took place last October after my trip to Hajj (pilgrimage). There have been subsequent transactions every month, not under the named site but a discrete label, which I believe is normal for such websites. I don't check my bank statements because I have paperless statements, and it is something I haven't made into a habit...I have not pursued such immoral acts that the site promotes (this includes permissible acts, for instance the endeavour to find another wife [a non-Muslim] who wanted to be with a married man, which is allowed in Islam)." --Sounds like you're setting up your defense there, Hamza, for when it is found that you are responsible and it's not fraud like you're claiming.

That was a fantastic statement. What a round about way to say, it wasn't me, and I don't know anything about it, and I could have charged it back but don't read my bank info.
    I guess he is flush!
    I don't buy it.

I'm disappointed he couldn't lie in this instance without looking like a buffoon. Or has this always been the case?

I've never heard of Hamza Tzortzis, but he sure made it to Ri's book of idiots. What an absolute nutjob!
You know when you're writing an essay for school and it's just bullshit after bullshit? That's how I feel when reading his statement.

Not noticing £15 out your bank every month? That £15 can buy me a cute dress.
Although, I don't really look thoroughly when I see my statement because I know I'm not a heavy spender, but I do skim through it at the very least.

If someone wanted to ruin his image, they could have did it publicly with all that information they supposedly held.

    And this guy...  Cheesy

Hmm. So not only does the fraudster know hamza's personal info, he also knows the details of his banking account, enough to make the site charge him for nine months. And he's been receiving emails from the site for the nine months, but didn't notice them since they went into junk. And the guy made the first transaction in australia at the time hamza was in australia as well.

Hamza has edited his statement. Fortunately, you can see the edit history! So I'm going to post the full version, before and after edit, because I have a feeling he's going to realize soon that everyone can see the edits.

The first statement was Saturday, August 22, 2015 at 10:05 AM (converted to my local time, PST). The second one was Saturday, August 22, 2015 at 10:35 AM (also converted to my local time). I did a strikethru of the line he removed during the edit:

Important announcement: It has come to my attention that my details are on the Ashley Madison data leak. This includes my name, address, and bank card details.

This is an obvious case of fraud. My email address (this website doesn't verify emails, and all the relevant emails went to junk) can be found online and so can my address, as it is linked to my business account, which is registered online. My date of birth is known from either previous lectures or Facebook. These types of online attacks are not uncommon, for example in the past year there have been multiple attempts to access my emails.

The first transaction took place last October after my trip to Hajj (pilgrimage). There have been subsequent transactions every month, not under the named site but a discrete label, which I believe is normal for such websites. I don't check my bank statements because I have paperless statements, and it is something I haven't made into a habit.

This is a serious matter of fraud or malice for which the bank and police have been informed. They will now pursue the matter further as a formal crime. I am not ruling anything out at the moment, including the possibility of my phone being illegally hacked. Retrospectively speaking, it has shown signs of being hacked.

It seems that the first transaction was made in Australia when I was there for lectures and courses. It could have been someone who knows me, someone who hates me, or a malicious person who found out who I was. It could be one person or two, they could be working locally, from abroad or both. At the moment I have no idea. But it is clear that they probably didn't complete what they intended to do, as the data so far indicates that there was not much activity and/or dialogue that would have led to a meeting (although I'm getting a few people to go through the data, they haven't given me the full details yet, so this is speculative).

My whereabouts and activities, both private and public are traceable and recorded, and there is without any doubt that I have not pursued such immoral acts that the site promotes (this includes permissible acts, for instance the endeavour to find another wife [a non-Muslim] who wanted to be with a married man, which is allowed in Islam). My face is recorded when I enter and leave work, and the gym (the main places I go to). My social and professional meetings are public, and with people that can honestly confirm my presence.

I'm trying to find answers to why someone would do this, and what they intended, as they seemed to have profiled me well and attempted to not be explicit about my identity. This was done maybe to expose me in the future by showing signs that I was deliberate discrete, who knows. Additionally, they obviously did not predict the leak.

Unfortunately, some people will have a field day. This is not my concern at all, there's already a lot of slander and hate online about me. I have my suspicions and unanswered questions too. However, and most importantly, my concern is now with my family and their privacy. I would appreciate that you all respect that.

Thank you. May God bless you all and shower you all with His guidance, mercy and love.

So Hamza, you are claiming that some guy knew all of your private information and wanted to screw with you so he created a fake account on Ashley Madison. This guy then paid hundreds of dollars to maintain the account for 9 months. This account was then used to make transactions at locations where you were also present at the time. Then the ultimate plan was to hack the Ashley Madison database and release 40 million users so you could be exposed. Am I getting this right?

I just posted this on Hamza's Facebook Page:

I'm so sorry this fraud has been done to you Hamza - I hope the person/people responsible can be caught and exposed for this crime. Identity fraud is amongst the most hateful and distressing forms of crimes and God knows why some people do it. There are all sorts of whackos on the internet. I have myself been the target of hacks of one sort or another and became deeply upset. It causes so much anguish to the person and their loved ones. There is something so horribly unsettling about someone stealing your identity and acting as you. Unfortunately it's one of the dangers of putting oneself out there on the internet. Sometimes I think it's such a horrible world with people who would do such dishonest and deeply hurtful things.

Thing is, it is possible someone stole his bank account information (he doesn't deny that it really was his card being used). It is possible that someone used his personal computer or phone to enter that information on Ashley Madison. It is possible someone went to a lot of work to track his movements and travel with him, to send messages from those locations. It's possible that someone did all that. But it's not likely. And every message he posts about it digs the pit he's in a little deeper.

Actually, I don't think that's necessary. The possibility of remote surveillance and control of compromised machines makes this scenario a lot simpler. If you put most of your important personal data in one basket - a laptop that travels with you, say - you make it very easy.

Hamza Tzortzis is a vile individual. He knew  very well that he was putting Professor Hoodbhoy and his family in danger by spouting that the Professor hates the muslim world. Irony of it all is that the Professor has his livelihood and residence in the muslim world, while Tzortzis does not.

Sure, that's possible. But consider these lines from his statement:

"My email address [later redacted: (this website doesn't verify emails, and all the relevant emails went to junk)--did he or did he not see the emails?] can be found online"

"The first transaction took place last October after my trip to Hajj (pilgrimage). There have been subsequent transactions every month, not under the named site but a discrete label, which I believe is normal for such websites. I don't check my bank statements because I have paperless statements, and it is something I haven't made into a habit." -- He gets paperless statements (which means that, for example, his wife won't find them in the mailbox), which isn't itself suspicious; he says he doesn't check them, which again, isn't itself suspicious. He later claims that there are no other odd charges on his account. It is possible that someone did sign him up for just this one thing, for no personal gain of their own, on an account that he doesn't check the statements for and doesn't get statements sent to his house for, sure. But who are the people who are going to have this information, plenty of time on their hands, and no motive other than "some day maybe a hack will release this information and he'll be embarrassed"?

In regards to the messages that had been sent from that account to solicit meetings with the purpose of sex to other users of the website, he said:

"It seems that the first transaction was made in Australia when I was there for lectures and courses. But it is clear that they probably didn't complete what they intended to do, as the data so far indicates that there was not much activity and/or dialogue that would have led to a meeting."

Then there's this: "I have not pursued such immoral acts that the site promotes (this includes permissible acts, for instance the endeavour to find another wife [a non-Muslim] who wanted to be with a married man, which is allowed in Islam)" -- This is pretty much the "If I Did It" statement--if I did it, it wasn't for sex, it was for a new wife!

"they seemed to have profiled me well and attempted to not be explicit about my identity. This was done maybe to expose me in the future by showing signs that I was deliberate discrete, who knows. Additionally, they obviously did not predict the leak." -- They profiled him well? In what way, in terms of his sexual preferences (part of the leak), his location and activities (probably in the messages), his relationships and family? Why would they be careful not reveal his identity, if the goal was to eventually expose him, what sense would it make to make it LOOK like you were trying to be discrete, while simultaneously framing you for being sex craved? If whoever it was didn't predict the leak--then why did they do it? Did they not want there to be a leak in the future? If they didn't intend for it to be eventually leaked, what was their motive? I mean, even the American government has never done something this batshit, they haven't dedicated this much time and effort to a plot, and they've tried all sorts of sex-related blackmail.

"my concern is now with my family and their privacy. I would appreciate that you all respect that." -- I do respect his family, and I'm not dragging them into this. It's HIM I don't respect. It's HIS words/actions that call into question how seriously HE takes their relationships. Not mine.

Flip the coin for a second, and it's hardly inconceivable that someone - especially someone prone to logorrhea - experiencing an embarassing identity theft will editorialise, and perhaps do so poorly. Of course, it's not also inconceivable that this is bluster. Either way, too much circumstantial and too little hard evidence for me.

(Not that I'd care to imagine the latter, but that's for another thread.)

Is it likely that someone decided to use Hamza's information to--what, shame him on the off-chance the site gets hacked and his info leaked somewhere down the line? Eh. Is it possible? Yeah, why not.

But more importantly, I think a lot of people in the public eye, especially those who made a name for themselves being holier-than-thou in one way or another, need to be aware of what they're setting themselves up for. When you're a crusader against very human vices and you're in the public eye, how much sympathy are you going to get when you're caught indulging in one, or how much sympathy and trust will you have if someone, say, steals your information and sets you up? I'm sure Hamza and likely his family are feeling a bit distressed or ashamed right about now. It's not very fun to be the target of judgment and shaming, and maybe there's a live and let live lesson in there somewhere for a more reflective and empathetic Hamza.

Other side of the coin: if we want sympathy or understanding or people respecting our privacy if the tides ever turn on one of us (and it appears easier every day to earn the public ire) perhaps there's a lesson for us, here, too. Check if your spouse's email is in there if you must, because that is your business, and then maybe the rest should be left alone.

Yes, there's something deeply vindicating about these ironic cases, especially when the person exposed spent a lot of time causing others grief, but we ought to be better than that. We don't have to buy the excuses hook, line, and sinker, but we should be ready to say, "It's none of our business--now wouldn't you agree?"

Mr Tzortzis has made his twitter time line private, only confirmed followers have access to his tweets now. True or not (and I don't really care either way, do have sympathy for his spouse and family though), Tzortzis has held quite a high-profile, and his despicable views on several issues are a known fact for many, so people are really sticking it to him.
