    I'm surprised nobody apart from Toor has an opinion on this given that the EU leaders are currently in crunch negotiations about the new EU-UK deal, and that the British are supposed to be voting in a referendum on it in a few months time.  The whole EU debate in the UK also seems very bound up with opinions about immigration, which is a subject many of you have expressed strong opinions about in other threads, so I'm surprised that after two days we've had one opinion about the EU and one off topic post from Yeez.

    Unfortunately the fact appears to be that very few people are well informed enough about European politics to articulate a wroth while opinion. Apathy towards the EU in terms of public interest in the politics and voter turnout is rather high. It'd be interesting to see what the turnout of the EU referendum would be.

    I would opt to remain within the EU based upon economic grounds, tighter regulations of banks and accountability of our government. We are able to take any grievances to the ECHR and hold our 'country' to account. This outweighs any interest I may have regarding the skewed immigration debate.

    We would not come out of the ECHR if we left the EU though as they are completely separate institutions. That is a different matter completely.

    True. A lot of the arguments for remaining with the EU appears to be economic. I suppose once your economy is tied with another country you may begin to take an interest in your human rights record and that of others and seek to appease the other country by reducing/rethinking HR violations. I can't help but think that the two are not mutually exclusive in the game of politics. Take into account that if we exit the EU the caps on working hours p/w are removed (if The Economist is to be believed). Will we have a recourse to appeal this? I hope so.

    Enough about me. What do you think?

    It occurs to me that the Little Englander tendency of the Conservative Party - those guys that didn't fuck off to UKIP, mostly - have been thrown a bone with this, and with the increasingly ridiculous restrictions on legal immigration we've seen over the last few years.

    Still, a shotgun blast to the face will remove any troublesome zits, so..

    Great to be back. I came back after hearing/watching what happened between Maryam and Goldsmiths University.

    Again, I know little about the economic implications of a Brexit' and that is the crux of the matter. I won't be swayed by immigration politics.

    No to a Brexit, I love that this country is part of the EU. Sure there are costs but there are so many benefits for the country and for us as citizens. I have benefited a lot from the free movement of persons legislations and so have many others. The UK is not in the least bit self-sufficient and would suffer without EU economical and trade benefits as well as additional job opportunities. Disadvantages of a Brexit outweigh advantages.

    You get full access to the single market for it, and that currently accounts for approx. 40% of British exports.

    Not to mention massive farming subsidies, which our government has been fighting to keep under the Common Agricultural Policy. Or cuts to your mobile phone tariffs both here and while roaming within the EU. There's also the small matter of EU membership allowing Britain to be a part of a major trading bloc, giving it a degree of clout that it hasn't had since World War I, never mind the trading agreements pre-EU when it came to the Commonwealth.

    Put less temperately - a Brexit is one hell of a price to pay for some Britons to finally accept what more hard-nosed international types have been saying for a while - we're a backwater with some distinctly moth-eaten pretensions to greatness.

    "Told what to do"? You're talking as if Britain (in the abstract) has no input into any of this, but OK, let's run with it.

    If it's rule by bureaucrats that you object to, bear this in mind: David Cameron's promotion of Parliamentary sovereignty goes hand in hand with the departmental expediting of secondary legislation (statutory instruments and the like), rather than Acts of Parliament (primary legislation). You know, stuff that barely, if ever, gets any proper scrutiny, Parliamentary or otherwise. Most legislation is driven by the executive - the government - rather than the legislature (i.e. Parliament), in a way that increasingly suggests that the Parliamentary stage is considered as much of a formality as the Royal Assent.

    What does this have to do with bureaucrats? Well, public policy in government departments doesn't change very much, generally, whoever wins a general election; ministers come and go, but senior civil servants - and those who lobby or otherwise influence them - carry on.

    Really of topic but I can't find that thread in which I think Zeca referenced the book 'Battling the Gods' and the author appears on The Big Questions @ around 41:00 on the issue  'is atheism the rational choice?'. It's available on iPlayer.

    I just want no part of anything that leads to globalization, eventual one-world government and multi-national corporate fascism.  I have no political leaning with any party whether left, right or any other.   However if I had to choose between corporate fascism and socialism I would choose socialism every time.

    BTW yeezevee I'm no fan of the monarchy either, I was just acknowledging that we are, however, supposed to be a sovereign nation.

    I'm having trouble reconciling the first and third sentences here, especially as the choice we're being given re Brexit doesn't involve opting out of globalisation or rule by multinationals.

    I want the UK to stay in the EU, because at least we have a RELATIONSHIP with Europe even if it isn't very good. Not to mention that I'm concerned what it would mean for EU citizens in the UK (and vice versa) if Cameron decides to leave.

    Cameron wants to stay, he's made that quite clear.  Its the Nigel Farages and Boris Johnsons who want to leave.  Ultimately it will be the public who make the decision though.
