  • Mosque Classes
     OP - October 20, 2008, 09:14 PM

My 7 year-old daughter has a friend from school who is Muslim - I think that's partly why they became friends.

Her friend is older than her and gone to another school now. My daughter really misses her and got in touch. Her friend said they could meet-up at the Mosque after school tomorrow - as she goes to Islamic classes there.

I have agreed to take my daughter along.

    Should be fun grin12

That's cool. I don't see why their should be a problem, unless you start one, or someone recognizes you and decides to start one.

I chose to get circumcised at 17, don't tell me I never believed.

Yup, can't see any reason for drama unless there's an idiot present. Anyway you can always quote their favourite lines about how there is "no compulsion in religion" and "Islam is peace".

Isn't it bloody sad that this should even be a point of discussion. I can only hope that religion doesn't come between two young pals, Hassan. Was the meeting the fun you hoped for?  Neil

We are not here to fight religion. We are here to make religion irrelevant. NM

For a moment I thought you were saying you were planning on taking your daughter to the actual classes, but if it's just meeting up with a friend outside of the clsses then have fun.  Afro

She enjoyed herself - and wants to attend Arabic Classes at the mosque with her friend. If I refuse she will just want it more. The problem is that her mum is a devout Muslim and my daughter says she is a Muslim and wants to go to the Mosque. The more I avoid it and make excuses the more she wants to go and romanticizes about it.

Let her do it. Seriously. For a start there's no harm in learning another language. That's always a useful ability. I imagine this mosque isn't the sort of mosque that Omar Bakri would frequent. You're a good balance for any excesses she may be exposed to and , as you say, if you deny her this she'll automatically rebel anyway.

If you want the freedom to think for yourself when it comes to religion you have to allow your daughter the same thing and trust her ability to make good decisions.

Well that's pretty much my way of thinking about the situation - and why I took her in the first place. I'm not too concerned as I am confident she will grow up with a good head on her shoulders and wont fall for any nonsense.

But I'm not too happy about leaving her at the mosque - (without me being there and seeing what's being taught and who is teaching her) even if it is for Arabic classes. My daughter says her friend teaches the other girls. I am going to have to find out a bit more before I agree to her going.

I agree with Oz, Hassan. With your guidance she could become a thinking muslim and not a blind indoctrinee. She might even influence those around her.

Religion is ignorance giftwrapped in lyricism.

I take your point about wanting to see what is being taught. Perhaps you could sit in on one of the classes.

Oh ffs, they're kids. Do the people who run the mosque automatically assume all men are paedophiles?

They are usually hypersensitive when it comes to the women/girls area in a Mosque - but I'll ask if I can sit in and see what they say.

Honestly?  I wouldn't take my kids, I'm not a muslim and whilst I'm all for letting them be what they want to be when they are older, they can bloomin well do it when they are older.

I also wouldn't take my kid to a church for lessons even if they asked, or to a synagogue even if they asked, religion is something they can learn about when they are older, for now I'll stick to talking to them about things, letting them learn the same as other kids in school and taking them to the natural history museum.

It's you choice of course, but I must admit I can't quite wrap my head around why you would even be considering it.

So basically you are going to deny your kids religious education. Don't cry when they turn out to be Scientology fans.

They get religious education in school on a broad range and they have me to teach them more in depth at home.  Roll Eyes

So tell me Tut, if your kid when you have one comes to you and says "my best friend is going bible lessons at church, I really want to go, I'm a christian can I go" you would let them go because you want them to have religious education?  whistling2

Firstly I don't want to have kids, secondly, (hypothetically speaking) if she did want to go, I would push her more to Islam then Christianity, although I would have taught her good in critical and logical thinking, that she would not fall for either, although I would prefer her for cultrual reasons to follow Islamic ethics and morality, just as I do.

Tut, I'm pretty sure that's Hassan himself as a kid, not 5%er attire either. Anyways, 5%ers are cool.

They don't dress much different than your average Harlemite (or Chicago, or Milwuakee or whatever), than wearing that symbol, and sometimes they wear kufis with a long tassle and a ball at the end of it.

They split from the Nation of Islam, which came from the Moorish Science Temple, which thought Islamic symbols were cool.

Well I'm no expert in psychology, but I reckon if I keep refusing her pleas she will only romantacise and become more keen on going to the mosque.

This way, I hope she will see it is really quite boring. (I hated it when my dad took us to an Egyptian Sunday School for a while - it didn't last long lol)

The thing is this did not come out of the blue, she has been pestering me for ages about the "Islamic" side of things. Her mum is very religious and always goes on about it when they are with her. My daughter herself constantly tells people she is "Muslim" (or Arabic - same thing to her lol). She knows I don't believe and am not a Muslim now. Maybe its her way of challenging me - or perhaps keeping in touch with her mum who is not around (most of the time)

I think if I deny her the chance to explore her own identity a bit - I will only store up trouble for later. At least this way I am there to explain things from my point of view and guide her.

OK, Thanks Awais - good to see you btw Smiley

The the photo was in Tunisia in the early 60s (possibly 1961) when I was about two years old - so the hat may be what the Tunisian flag was back then - dunno really Smiley

Hass if she kept pestering you about smoking would you allow it?  Would you sit down and worry that if you don;t give in to her curiousity to  smoke it will romanticise the whole thing or are you sensible enough to realise that when it comes to certain situations she is the child and you are the parent?

Smoking is addictive though.  Mosque classes are likely to deromanticise Islam for her, and bore her to tears.  After a few weeks she'll be making excuses not to go, i bet.

In all truth I have enough on my plate as it is, my kids can explore all that bullshit in their own time.

Plus (much as I know how people will get all hyper sensitive about it  ( Islam fucking sucks big time, why on earth would I ever consider exposing my child to that craP?

FOR PEOPLE TO LIKE ME?  fuck that

FOR PEOPLE TO RESPECT ME?  Fuck you, you morons.

I just don't get why anyone would throw away their life on such a bullshit ideology and then turn around and let their child be exposed to the same crap too.  Roll Eyes

Arabic lessons are called arabic lessons, but the title cracks me the helll up because in reality arabic lessons are merely quran lessons and an ex muslim who thinks thats totally fine and dandy is a bit far out from what i see as reaoanble behaviour after deconversions.
