Is killing an aboriginal still a tradition on Australia day? Is there any more land left to steal?

Should people really be celebrating a genocide?

    Shame on you.

Heaps of Aboriginals celebrate Australia Day.

Besides, do you realize how much crime they commit? They have the 'We're Sorry' day for them...don't generalize. They get heaps of benefits that come straight out of taxpayers money, and you know what they (and by they I mean the vast majority of them in Western Australia) spend it on? You got it, booze. I had the same views as you before I actually LIVED here, and yes, my view has vastly changed since dealing with aboriginals. My boyfriend used to work as a postman, and he met very few nice aboriginal families on his whole post round.

The land didn't belong to anyone originally, it's just that the Aboriginals were 'there first'. Brits are the ones that should be blamed if anything, for kicking those 'bloody convicts' out instead of dealing with them.

I'm against genocide and all that, but come on, it was a day where everybody could get together and there was a feeling of unity. You can't blame Australians nowadays for what happened years ago.

I am against nationalist Australians/Brits/Americans, etc but why say 'shame on you' to us for just wanting to spend a nice day out with our family and friends and watch the fireworks.

Nothing that I have said condones racism. I'm not racist, I'm fighting against racism. You have to realize though that Australia Day does not equate to racism since Aboriginals were there themselves, celebrating it.

People talk about racism towards Aboriginals, Pakistanis, Indians, etc, but what about calling someone a 'bloody pom'...that offends a LOT of my English friends, so yeah, it goes both ways.

I apologize for not being POLITICALLY CORRECT and for posting this thread. Roll Eyes

Animation Guy, there are people who question celebrating Australia Day and perhaps changing it to a less exclusive day. However there is an incredible amount of racism directed, as is more than apparent, against Aboriginal people. They're still pigeon-holed as criminals, perpetrators of welfare fraud, drunkards etc. The same racist stereotypes can be directed against anyone really - Roma people in Europe for example.

HeartBomb, can I recommend a few bands to play at your gig in WA? I reckon No Remorse would be good, Skrewdriver if they're still around.

There is a lot of racism against Aboriginal people, but they are no different against white Australians, I can assure you. There are many white Australians that do respect Aboriginals, just as there are many Aboriginals that are fine with white Australians.

But why should I feel bad for celebrating a day that displays a beautiful display of fireworks...just like July 4th, or St George's Day.

From what I've heard, Skrewdriver is a skin head neo-Nazi band.... wacko Same with No Remorse. Are you being sarcastic? Because if you were, it wasn't very funny.

I suggest, to satisfy everyone who wants to be PC, banning 4th of July, St Georges Day, Independance day in Pakistan/India, Bangladesh, etc...because the independence of those countries was also due to British Colonialism.

Last post before I disappear, insha Allah forever: Australia Day has nothing to do with Independence. It commemorates the ARRIVAL of the First Fleet thereby commencing, for the Aboriginals at least, a disastrous 2 centuries.

I am not an advocate of changing the Day to something more inclusive - I couldn't give a fuck. However, I did object to your disgusting post about Aboriginals being drunks, criminals and welfare recipients. It's got fuck all to do with being "PC" - this is pure and simple racism. I find it even more reprehensible your suggestion that you "know" these things because you now live here. I have lived in Australia for 29 years and I have met and known innumerable Aboriginal people, studied Aboriginal culture at University and I can tell you that you assertions are racist CRAP not dissimilar to the drivel levelled at Muslims en masse.

    Adios!

I did not generalise, I said a lot of the aboriginals I know, that I have dealt with are - I spoke merely from experience. I've also met some nice aboriginal people and I've stated that.

Many people here KNOW I'm not racist and I'm completely hurt that you would suggest that. I had no intent of hurting or disgusting anyone, but I'm annoyed that people have the nerve to tell me to be ashamed just because I made a post saying happy australia day.

    My fricking fault, sorry.

I never said I know everything about Australia now that I live here, but I have known people that do.

I apologise if I offended, that was not my intent. I don't condone racism, I've already said that.

The arrival of the first fleet was the spread of British colonialism, which is also implicated by the independence of India/Pakistan.

Aboriginals are NOT the minority, so stop treating them like they are. If you want to treat them equally, stop giving them sympathy, treat them like any other Australians.

Also, if you are leaving CEMB because of what I said, that's pretty pathetic. Other people here don't have to deal with the consequences of a leaving member because of what I said.

Well she didn't say all Aborigines were like that. I assume she knows they aren't. On the other hand if we're going to be honest the rates of all those things are higher among Aboriginal people. This is largely a side effect of having their culture destroyed earlier and some of them are still picking up the pieces.

Well they are a minority but if you mean they aren't oppressed like they used to be then you're basically correct. Although some people still harbour racist attiudes towards them such attitudes aren't officially condoned and haven't been for ages.

Who said I have sympathy? Is sympathy a bad thing? Anyway I'm sorry. I'm sure you're right. By not having sympathy with these welfare cheating criminal drunkards their life expectancy will increase 20 years to be on par with the national average and the cops will stop beating and killing them.

This really should be national policy. Oh wait, it already is.

Maybe I should bold the part that you seemed to have overlooked. In case you missed it, that means I believe Aboriginals are just as Australian as a white Australian and should be treated like that. It's called equality.

Jesus H Christ x2, I have a part Aboriginal friend who takes less offence to what I said than you do.

Absolutely I'm all for equality - equality of opportunity - because some people are severely disadvantaged while others have a headstart. Anyway I'm not interested in this debate. I don't want to rain on your parade. Happy Australia Day. Don't get me wrong - I love Australia. I love the freedoms, I love the people - white, black and every shade in between. I love the landscape - the Australian bush is unmatched in its beauty. It doesn't mean that I won't call it like I see it. You see it differently. That's cool too.

I can't be bothered to fish for your approval on my opinions and therefore I cannot be bothered to continue this discussion.

If you think I'm racist for my views (which I have openly told to my Aboriginal friend) then so be it. Like I said I'm not fishing for your approval.
