There's only one purpose for guns, to kill.

Correct. So why should some people have them and others not?

Because then some people (not saying everybody) would go around being irresponsible with guns?

Uh no, I don't hate cops. But I know they generally spend the majority of their day on trivial crap, and are hamstrung by politics.

They really have a thankless job. I've heard many stories from officers I know, where the person that called them in the first place suddenly changes their mind. And then tries to claim that the police were harassing and abusing them.

Crap like that happens much more often than a cop actually abusing someone for no reason. Plus, for the bullshit and scum they have to wade through, and associate with, they get paid very little.

    I agree with you Biaxident.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that there are cops in the US who I know generally fit the stereotype of lazy, complacent cops who spend their time on trivial stuff. However, I've met some cops that take no shit when it comes to crime...and are actually very good at what they do, and love serving the community.

There have been cops that I know of who stop random people in shopping centres (happened recently to a friend of a friend) and search their bags. Then demand to search their cars which are parked in the parking lot...which is ridiculous.

I'm not defending cops, I'm just saying that the type of stereotypes many people on this forum try to argue against are exactly the same as the stereotypes they have about other groups.

Not all cops are irresponsible with guns and out to get you, just like not all Muslims are violent, hateful people. Having said that, different countries that have police should be judged differently. Like for example, police in Pakistan and India are known to be very corrupt in general whereas compared to them, the Metropolitan Police in the UK is way more reliable.

Stereotypes are wrong more often than not. Unfortunately, our brains seem to be wired to do it automatically.

Smart people learn to ignore knee-jerk responses, and judge others as individuals.

Learning to read peoples intentions and body language are good ways to help you make decisions.

Sure, everybody hates cops until they need one.

And when you need one and they're not there and you're unarmed, what then?

Besides, my point was not "all cops suck" as you seem to think it was, although I do generally have a much less favorable opinion of them than Biaxident. My point was that official organs of the government like the police and military have proven themselves to be just as capable of misusing their weapons as private citizens-- sure you can make the argument that's a minority of cops, but then again, gun crime is definitely carried out by a minority of private gun owners. And when we're talking about gun bans, what we're really talking about is saying ordinary, law-abiding citizens don't get them-- criminals will still find a way if they're determined to, and the state's guns will still be around, being used for both good and ill (just like private citizens' guns).

I just don't see the justification for saying only the state can legally possess small-arms-- that is officially giving the state (and unofficially criminals) a monopoly on force, and putting the government above the people it is supposed to serve. You live in a crown commonwealth nation, so I guess the justification is easier there, but I'm supposed to be living in a democratic republic of limited government. Now I think the days of limited government are long gone here, but I'm opposed to further encroachments on the traditional freedoms of our people-- and like it or not, in America that has always included private gun ownership.

Plus there has been a consistently racist and classist element to gun control in this country. Gun control here has always been about people control by the state. The state has enough power as it is. They don't need a monopoly on small-arms on top of the excessive power they already have.

That being said, we live in different countries, so you can have the last word on this if you like. You're not in the position of voting to take away my rights, so, while I've enjoyed our conversation, I don't feel compelled to convince you of my position.

This is sort of why I never bother arguing about gun control with Americans.  I totally approve of the gun control in my own country - which is even stricter than that of the UK or Australia - but if I suddenly became POTUS, and even it was a popular move, I would definitely not tinker with the 2nd Amendment.

There are already too many guns in US society for it to work.  You would be disarming the law abiding population, while criminals still have guns, which means the only defense they would have against an armed mugger/intruder would be a police officer.  Which means you need to leave the police armed.

I think basically, unless you live in a society where the police can be disarmed, there's little point in disarming the law abiding.

The United States has had a hell of a lot of massacres. Criminals have got a hold of guns, I agree they can if they are determined to do so.

You are right, Q-Man, about the fact that I live in a Commonwealth country so it's a little different to the United States. UK and Australia have strict gun laws, but when was the last time there was a massacre here? In Australia, you can only have a gun if you have a farm, and even then it has to be kept in a safe (since the 1993 Tasmanian massacre). Amongst that, you have to have a firearms license.

Gun crime in correlation with gun control has little to do with the availability of the guns and more to do with a) availability of ammo (because let's face it, without ammo, the gun is useless) and b) the society (which varies from country to country).

Look at the States, where ammo is (was?) readily available to BUY in stores like K-Mart. It's handed out to people, thousands of rounds, without checking their license, as long as they are 18 or 21 - although this varies from state to state. In Australia, it is easier to get drugs than to get ammo, and you need to show your gun license.

I'm enjoying the debate with you Q-Man. I'm not trying to change your mind, this debate is opening up my mind to, so would love it if you did continue with me. I'm not too knowledgeable about gun culture in the US and this is a learning experience for me.

In this country it wouldn't work. We have the FOP and even small-town police departments lobbying for things like Armored Personnel Carriers, full body armor and M4s in the trunk of every patrol car. Sad thing is, often they get it. The police also train with the military in the US. The Drug War has so militarized our police departments they can no longer be considered a regular constabulary or peace officers. We also have, by far, the highest incarceration rate in the world. The US Border Patrol has arguably unconstitutional checkpoints set up several miles within our own borders. The Supreme Court has watered down the 4th Amendment so much to where it's now acceptable for cops to just stop people in the street and pat them down because they "look suspicious". My city's mayor has banned outdoor gatherings on street-corners and sidewalks. In many cities in the US, certain neighborhoods are subject to adult curfews.

In other words, although it's not like we've become a dictatorship, the militarization of our police forces and our extremely high incarceration rate means that the US has taken on some elements of a police state. And even if we were to get 80% of semi-auto rifles and handguns that are currently privately possessed out of circulation (a feat, in this country, that would take several decades), I don't see our police ever giving up their firearms.

The only way you could effectively and fairly reduce the amount of weapons in this country is through a combination of a voluntary national buy-back program and regulation at the point of production (limiting the amount of arms that manufacturers can sell both to private citizens AND to the government), but short of the establishment of a minarchist/libertarian socialist society in this country, I don't see the latter ever happening. Any regulation at the point of consumption will necessarily be discriminatory and unjust.

Yes, but it also has a hell of a lot of unjustified police shootings of unarmed people-- the difference being that the police involved often get off without jail time and even if I'm carrying legally and I empty my magazine into a person because I thought they had a gun, but they didn't, you can be sure I'm gonna be locked away for a long time. But nobody's talking seriously about gun control for the police (or the military for that matter-- we spend so much money on the military, even before 9/11, it's fuckin insane-- the US accounts for nearly 50% of ALL military spending in the world combined).

Sure, but b) is the one I'd like to work on. Until very recently (when Switzerland caved under pressure from the EU and due to international treaties), most Swiss males had a full-auto assault rifle at home with ammo (in the US it is very, very difficult for most people to privately own a full-auto assault rifle, and many states even ban semi-auto ones), yet they have consistently had a MUCH lower murder rate than us. Why? Cause I guess their society ain't all fucked up. Israel also has a very high gun ownership rate and a very low murder rate in comparison to the US (even when you include terrorist attacks). Same with Finland. In the reverse, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico have very restrictive gun control and even higher murder rates than the US.

I'd like to see our country attacking the much more difficult issue of what drives so many people to violence, rather than offering the simple band-aid "solution" of "let's just ban the most dangerous tools of violence". I'd like to see a similar approach to our failed and draconian drug policy as well.

As I said, politics has screwed things up worse than ever.

And any country that doesn't have every inch of it's borders constantly watched by an actual human, will continue to have weapons and contraband of all sorts available for the black market.

Frankly, I am all for legalizing marijuana and possibly other soft drugs. Hell, it will give the governments extra revenue through taxes, and through not spending money on 'The War On Drugs'.  And it might even cut down on drug related violence.

The shape is different on the scimitar so gonna have to get used to that. I was also thinking a single edged rapier, they're soooo slick and a military style hanger to go with it. I was browsing and saw this knife called a Stiletto...Im fucking having myself one of those.
