  • Does poetry exist in eminem's lyrics?

No, Bounty Killa should not be banned as it is not immediate incitement to violence, and, in any event, especially wide latitude should be given to art/music. Eminem has some very violent, misogynistic and homophobic lyrics, but banning him would have resulted in losing an incredibly talented artist.

    Eminem is incredibly talented? What?

I think he is, some of the lyrics he writes are really deep if you pay attention to them, it's just awesome poetry sometimes.

Other times not so much but he definately has talent.

Agreed, I hate rap music but some of his lyrics are surprisingly decent. It's a shame his a rap artist though Tongue

Yeah I'm not really a rap fan either lol but it would be silly to not recognise the art in the genre either.

Some rap artists have really moving and powerful lyrics, and some are just typical run of the mill vile women/gay/authority hating lyrics.

Rap music isn't my cup of tea, and I don't think Eminem has any musical talent whatsoever. I can imagine that there are some exceptional rappers, but I don't think Eminem fits into that niche.

An excerpt from his alleged poetry?

I mean I LOVE this one, not into rap but this one has made me cry many times:

    Quote
    "Mockingbird"

    Yeah
I know sometimes things may not always make sense to you right now
But hey, what daddy always tell you?
    Straighten up little soldier
    Stiffen up that upper lip
    What you crying about?
    You got me

Hailie I know you miss your mom and I know you miss your dad
Well I'm gone but I'm trying to give you the life that I never had
I can see you're sad, even when you smile, even when you laugh
I can see it in your eyes, deep inside you want to cry
    Cause you're scared, I ain't there?
Daddy's with you in your prayers
No more crying, wipe them tears
    Daddy's here, no more nightmares
We gon' pull together through it, we gon' do it
    Laney uncles crazy, ain't he?
Yeah but he loves you girl and you better know it
We're all we got in this world
When it spins, when it swirls
When it whirls, when it twirls
    Two little beautiful girls
    Lookin' puzzled, in a daze
    I know it's confusing you
Daddy's always on the move, mamma's always on the news
I try to keep you sheltered from it but somehow it seems
The harder that I try to do that, the more it backfires on me
All the things growing up his daddy that he had to see
Daddy don't want you to see but you see just as much as he did
We did not plan it to be this way, your mother and me
But things have gotten so bad between us
I don't see us ever being together ever again
Like we used to be when we was teenagers
But then of course everything always happens for a reason
I guess it was never meant to be
But it's just something we have no control over and that's what destiny is
But no more worries, rest your head and go to sleep
Maybe one day we'll wake up and this will all just be a dream

    [Chorus]
Now hush little baby, don't you cry
    Everything's gonna be alright
Stiffen that upper lip up little lady, I told ya
Daddy's here to hold ya through the night
I know mommy's not here right now and we don't know why
We feel how we feel inside
It may seem a little crazy, pretty baby
But I promise momma's gon' be alright

    It's funny
I remember back one year when daddy had no money
Mommy wrapped the Christmas presents up
And stuck 'em under the tree and said some of 'em were from me
    Cause daddy couldn't buy 'em
I'll never forget that Christmas I sat up the whole night crying
Cause daddy felt like a bum, see daddy had a job
But his job was to keep the food on the table for you and mom
And at the time every house that we lived in
Either kept getting broken into and robbed
Or shot up on the block and your mom was saving money for you in a jar
Tryna start a piggy bank for you so you could go to college
Almost had a thousand dollars till someone broke in and stole it
And I know it hurt so bad it broke your momma's heart
And it seemed like everything was just startin' to fall apart
Mom and dad was arguin' a lot so momma moved back
On the Chalmers in the flat one bedroom apartment
And dad moved back to the other side of 8 Mile on Novara
And that's when daddy went to California with his CD and met Dr. Dre
And flew you and momma out to see me
But daddy had to work, you and momma had to leave me
Then you started seeing daddy on the T.V. and momma didn't like it
And you and Laney were to young to understand it
Papa was a rollin' stone, momma developed a habit
And it all happened too fast for either one of us to grab it
I'm just sorry you were there and had to witness it first hand
Cause all I ever wanted to do was just make you proud
Now I'm sitting in this empty house, just reminiscing
Lookin' at your baby pictures, it just trips me out
To see how much you both have grown, it's almost like you're sisters now
Wow, guess you pretty much are and daddy's still here
Laney I'm talkin' to you too, daddy's still here
I like the sound of that, yeah
It's got a ring to it don't it?
Shh, momma's only gone for the moment

    [Chorus]

And if you ask me too
Daddy's gonna buy you a mockingbird
    I'mma give you the world
I'mma buy a diamond ring for you
    I'mma sing for you
I'll do anything for you to see you smile
And if that mockingbird don't sing and that ring don't shine
    I'mma break that birdies neck
I'll go back to the jeweler who sold it to ya
And make him eat every carat don't fuck with dad (haha)

Also don't forget that poetry is a broad area, to me this is poetic.

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

    Quote
    "Hailie's Song"

    [Intro - Spoken]
    Yo, I can't sing it
    I feel like singin'
    I wanna fuckin' sing
    Cuz I'm happy
    Yeah, I'm happy
    Ha Ha
    I got my baby back
    Yo, check it out

    [Verse 1 - Sung]
Some days I sit, starin' out the window
Watchin' this world pass me by
Sometimes I think theres nothin' to live for
I almost break down and cry

    Somtimes I think I'm crazy
    I'm crazy, oh so crazy
Why am I here, am I just wasting my time?

But then I see my baby
    Suddenly I'm not crazy
It all makes sense when I look into her eyes

    [Chorus]
Somtimes it feels like the world's on my shoulders
    Everyone's leanin' on me
Cuz sometimes it feels like the world's almost over
But then she comes back to me

    [Verse 2 - Sung]
My baby girl [Hailie laughs] keeps gettin' older
I watch her grow up with pride
People make jokes, cuz they don't understand me
They just don't see my real side

I act like shit don't phase me,
    Inside it drives me crazy
My insecurities could eat me alive

But then I see my baby
    Suddenly I'm not crazy
It all makes sense when I look into her eyes

    [Chorus]

    [Verse 3 - Rapped]
Man, if I could sing, I'd keep singing this song to my daughter
If I could hit the notes, I'd blow something as long as my father
To show her how I feel about her, how proud I am that I got her
God, I'm a daddy, I'm so glad that her mum didn't abort
Now you probly get this picture from my public persona
That I'm a pistol-packing drug-addict who bags on his momma,
But I wanna just take this time out to be perfectly honest
Cuz there's a lot of shit I keep bottled that hurts deep inside o' my soul,
And just know that I grow colder the older I grow
This boulder on my shoulder gets heavy and harder to hold
And this load is like the weight of the world
And I think my neck is breaking should I just give up,
Or try to live up to these expectations?

Now look, I love my daughter more than life in itself,
But I got a wife that's determined to make my life livin'hell
But I handle it well, given the circumstances I'm dealt
So many chances, man, it's too bad, coulda had someone else
But the years that I've wasted are nothing to the tears that I've tasted
    So here's what I'm facin':
3 felonies, 6 years of probation
I've went to jail for this woman, I've been to bat for this woman
I've taken bats to peoples backs, bent over backwards for this woman
Man, I shoulda seen it comin', why'd I stick my penis up in?
Woulda ripped the pre-nup up if I'd seen what she was fuckin'
But fuck it, it's over, there's no more reason to cry no more
I got my baby, baby the only lady that I adore, Hailie
So sayonara, try tomorra, nice to know ya
My baby's travelled back to the arms of her rightful owner
And suddenly it seems that my shoulder blades have just shifted
It's like the greatest gift you can get
    The weight has been lifted

Now it don't feel like the world's on my shoulders
    Everyone's leanin' on me
Cuz my baby know's that her daddy's a soldier
Nothin' can take her from me

    [Outro - Spoken]
    Woo!
    I told you I can't sing.
    Oh well, I tried
    Hailie, 'member when I said
If you ever need anything, daddy will be right there?
    Well guess what?
    Daddy's here.
    And I ain't goin'nowhere baby
    I love you! (kiss)

I can't remember saying that I hadn't seen better, this thread is only a response to the way you dismissed him as being capable of poetry.

I've seen worse that is considered the height of good poetry, I guess it really is just a matter of taste.

IMO, Eminem is incredibly talented. When I first started listening to him I reckoned there was no need for the profanities, however, now I think about it I think his usage of swearing is not misplaced. Much of his material conveys raw emotions and in such a context, the swearing simply enhances his lines.

Yeah, swearing isn't just used in rap either to convey the same emotions, I have to admit I love rock songs that have a few swear words peppered in them at the right moment, because then when I'm screaming along to the song, letting my emotions ride out with the song, I can also use the word to release pent up anger.

Its not surprising that people who are not into rap music like eminem! I don't see anything intellectual or artistic in his lyrics. He has a handful of subjects that all his songs are about; his daughter hayley, his wife kim, and female celebrities!

If you want to listen to a rapper who is a true poet, look no further than Roots Manuva.

Here is a verse from the track "Too Cold" about money.

    Quote
    I spoke with my money
    This ain't a joke money
    Banana boat money
    Banana vote money
    Food on a plate money
    Real or fake money
    Lose or take money
    At times I hate money
It's money that makes money makes people act funny
Civilized men start to act gunny gunny
Take your life in a second with the right kind of money
Life in the west we obsessed by money
Mind how you worship, you can't be blessed by money
I do the best with all my money
    Progress with my money
    Invest with my money
    Touch breasts with my money
    Get sex with my money
    Get vexxed with my money
Respect for my money means I feed my tummy
Blessed be my pound, get my food down dummy

Aw man, Slick Rick is one of my favorites. And he really paved the way for "narrative" rap, like Eminem uses.
