    I quite like watching movies based around the problems of the orthodox culture (in particular east asian cultures) and also religion. If anybody knows of any good ones then feel free to post them. I'll recommend a few to start with-

    East is East
    Provoked (I haven't seen this yet but will hopefully do so this weekend)
    Stoning of Soraya M. (just came out today, thanks to awais for letting me know about it).

    Submission, the one that's on Youtube made by that guy that got murked for it?

    Khuda Kay Liye was the last thing I saw on topic. It was okay, kinda lame, long (3 hours :'(), terrible acting, bad teeth; but the "sufi/moderate" mullah had some interesting arguments in the end against the "orthodox/extremeist" mullah. 'Watched' most of it with my finger on fast forward Grin.

    Oh yeah, I tried to watch Under The Moonlight, but the subtitles were translated bad, and I didn't get a satisfying understanding of it. Grin

    Has anyone seen a TV-Movie called "Yasmin" with Archie Panjabi in the title role? It is basically about a Muslim woman who has had an arranged marriage with a bloke from back home who she did not want to get married to, and it is all about her struggling to find an identity.


    I know you are Pakistani Peruvian, and is that what you liked East is East? I'm just asking because I absolutely loved that film, and the reason for that is I could totally relate to it. I could understand every single character and I have seen every (serious) character in that film in real life. I know some people who have said that they didn't like it because it just stereotyped Pakistanis into a violent, patriarchal culture but I don't consider it stereotyping because that aspect does exist within Pakistani culture.

    "Trembling before G-D" is really good. "Jihad for Love" was OK, but didn't live up to the TBG, if you ask me. I spent more time getting aggrivated and rolling my eyes during "Jihad" than I did contemplating. "Sabah" is a really good film as well.

    I'm not big on propaganda/agenda films, whether they be pro or anti religion/ethnicity/east/west, so I don't bother with those.

    Yep. It's quite biased though but I think it's good to luck at it from a religious influenced cultural aspect.

    Yes, that is part of the reason why I like it. I can relate to the kids in the family and how difficult it is to live in conflicting cultures. I have never met any one like the father though, I don't know anyone who has a polygamous marriage or who beats their wife. I might just be oblivious to the whole beating the wife thing though, parts of my family are quite traditional so I wouldn't be surprised if any men like that exist amongst my relatives.

    I don't think it stereotypes pakistanis either. Muslims only say that because it shows the side of Pakistan they hate and would prefer to ignore. My dad has banned us from watching this movie Roll Eyes We watch it anyway though Tongue All the kids in my family love it as we can relate to it.

    The Kite Runner? I forgot that's a film now!! Anyway, it's a book about people who are Muslim by default, but I don't see it as a religious book per se. 

    Anywhoo, I watched "Be Like Others" on HBO today. Very very good. I forgot how much I like Persians. I highly recommend it.

    I agree with you regarding "Trembling" and "Jihad."  JFL could have been SO much better.  For one, I thought it was too male centered.  Although I suppose it could have happened that way for understandable reasons.

    "Arranged" is a small indie film from America about a friendship between an Orthodox Jewish teacher and a Muslim one.  It's actually pretty good, although the whole time I was just dying thinking "No real Muslimah would wear her hijab like that!"  It's based on the life story of the producer.

    "Saved!" which is sort of a satire, but also kind of brings up some of the realities /  problems of the evangelical culture (hypocrisy, sexuality)

    "Kadosh", which is a window into the world of ultra-Orthodox women in Jerusalem.

    "Me and the Mosque" which is a documentary about women in the masjid in North America, but it did leave me very angry and feeling more alienated from Muslims.

    "Baran" about Afghan refugees in Iran (not a documentary).  Another Iranian  movie, "Leila" which deals with polygamy. 

    I actually did not like "East is East" when I saw it years ago. I might feel differently today but at the time I was quite offended by it.  I also had a stick up my ass though.  I was really offended that the one kid who is sort of faithful and trying to 'strive in the deen' was also the weak one who got beat up a lot by the dad.  I felt the filmmakers were drawing a correlation between being religious, as a Muslim, and being a weakling who can't stand up for oneself.  I might see it differently now though.

    TV - I think 'Big Love' is really good, and I saw 'Sleeper Cell', thought it was okay. 

    I can't really think of anything that showed Muslims that was in any way interesting or positive or real to life other than these and also a movie that came out last year -- with Don Cheadle, where he plays a Muslim NSA agent or something who infiltrates a terror cell.  I mean, even beyond a lot of the Arabs or Muslims being just mindless bad guys in most movies, they also get a lot of stuff wrong.

    I liked Sleeper Cell. As Awais said, you may roll your eyes a lot when you watch it, but when I was a Muslim, I loved it. I still like it, but the series is really based on a lot of wishful thinking. Any Islamic reformist will love the series in my opinion.

    In that third clip of yours the Imam get's murked by the terrorist right after they cut off that scene Grin. The Imam character is based off a real guy in Yemen trying to reform terrorists with his brand of Islam (which I believed in).

    ' Osama' and 'Kaddosh 'are great films . There was a lot I liked about 'Yasmin 'but i was disappointeds that she retreated into orthodox islam at the end and the film seemed to be endorsing this  ( incidentally I read a feature on the film that said in the scene where Yasmin is verbally abused they had trouble shooting it because passers by kept intervening , offering support to the asian woman , until Archie Panjabi suggested they leave it in , so respect to Archie ...)

    Wow, I haven't watched any of these films.  It's time to remedy that.  wacko

    The only religious film I have seen is "the message" which was never inspiring to me.

    I'm going to watch some of the movies off of this list.

    I like Big Love, and I agree that 'Kadosh' was good (even though I suspect it was written by reformist Jews who are not fond of the Frum). I liked Saved! a lot as well. "Of course Jesus was white!". Priceless.

    All they managed to do was stain a popular phrase we'd been using for ages before the film arrived. I cant say "Singh is King" anymore without ppl thinking Im on about the film. Bollywood bastards.

    Yeah I think it is clear that 'Kadosh' was written and produced by non-Orthodox Israelis.  When I went to see it, though, there were quite a few modern Orthodox in the audience.  But there is a big difference between a modern Orthodox and a haredi and the film is about haredis.  All of them frum, but still a big gap between them and more than a little animosity.

    True, Fading. I wonder how many people know the difference though. It's like if you make a movie about Salafi - most people aren't going to be able to separate them from other approaches to Islam.

    Has anyone here seen Hell's Ground?

    Supposed to be Pakistan's first slasher flick but if you watch it it's pretty obvious that the underlying message is that good, pious little Muslims who don't go our drinking and joyriding whilst listening to loud music and flirting with girls won't end up on somebody's dinner table tonight!
