I thought the exact scientific term was "shaped like an ostrich egg".  Roll Eyes

Hassan do you know what the correct translation is: the quran says the earth is spherical, or ostrich egg shaped?

    Whats the chapter/verse?

I think that verse was trying to imply the earth is flat. Ask Baal about it (or Hassan if you know the verse number).

Daha means 'to spread out/flatten.' All the scholars and mufassirun have always said this.

I find the very notion that God should have hidden in the Qur'an words with meanings that contradict the Arabic language - so that a few idiots 1400 years later would "discover" Roll Eyes it's dubious reference to the science of the day - utterly absurd!

And for what purpose? To shore up the flagging faith of some Muslims browsing Youtube?

This is what http://quranicteachings.co.uk/earth-shape.htm have to say about the same thing.  P.S I am not making this up ..

    Quote
The key word in the above verse is ?dahaha?. In Arabic, there is a phrase, ?iza dahaha? which means ?when he throws the stones over the ground to the hole?. The hole is called ?Udhiyatun?. ?Almadahi? signify round stones according to the size of which a hole is dug in the ground in which the stones are thrown in a game. ?Almadahi? also signify a round thing made of lead by the throwing of which persons contend together. So there is a signification of ROUNDNESS in the root of the word ?dahaha?. According to some etymologists, the word for the ?egg of an ostrich? also has the same root as ?dahaha?. They also take from this that the earth is of the shape of the egg of an ostrich. Latest science findings confirm that the earth is not exactly spherical but the earth is an ellipsoid, i.e. flattened by its poles,[ just like the shape of an egg of an ostrich].

The Arabic words for ?flat? or ?level? or ?straight shaped? are ?sawi? and ?almustavi?. There is not a single place in Quran where there is any indication of the earth being ?flat? or ?straight shaped?. The word ?faraash? in 2:22, 51:48; the word ?wasia? in 4:97, 29:56, 30:10; the word ?mahd? in 20:53, 43:10, 78:6; the word ?basaat? in 71:19; the word ?suttihat? in 88:20; and the word ?tahaaha? in 91:6, all may mean, ?to spread?, ?to expand? or ?to extend? with slight differences in their connotations but none signify the earth being straight-shaped or flat.

Os - is it difficult to enable the COEM interface to recognise the characters ' & " so that they do not automatically show as a '?' when they are cut & pasted from another article over to here?

No idea. I think I might have to overwrite all files with clean ones to sort it and frankly I've been thinking of doing that.

ETA: I've also been thinking of ditching and reinstalling the portal as some of the tables for that have different collation to the rest of the database.

I hope you get more subscribers.

I took it down - I didn't like the way some ppl poked fun at me and it was posted on the Malaysian FFI site by some bigot who was saying the most filthy things about Islam - just made me sick - so I removed it and deleted it.

    I don't have it anymore.

I know I shouldn't let bigots wind me up - but they do.

I have been keeping an eye on youtube 'views' figures, and you are indeed right, your videos dont get as many views as they should and I dont get it  Huh?

I made an average home video that has been on youtube for 3 months and has got 1000 views, so it does not make any sense?

Hassan don't worry, your up there with the giants like NonStampCollector, Mrs.BettyBowers,  and the like.
Also, I think you should make more videos like AronRa or Thunderf00t do. Ya know, with verse numbers and statistics, facts and arguments and the such. Later you can take down their replies and rebuttles.(Sciencey  Afro)
You do a great job man, cheer up! I know from personal experience that when muslims see anything that speaks positively about islam, its an instant subscribtion for them  (I used to do it  whistling2).
Maybe this explains 8000 subs on that other guy. I think religious people are insecure and whenever they see something that props up their faith, they have to support it.

I have recently started making a note of things like "Subscribers" - "Views" etc... and the thing that really shocks me is that idiots get absolutely insane number of subs and views - that guy Converted2Islam for example has about 8,000 Subscribers - WTF? Some idiots get about 10,000 views in a day!???

It just made me a bit pissed off since I put a great deal of thought and effort into my videos and I have about 745 Subscribers (which is good - but compared to some - it's nothing).

Anyhoooo I thought I would make an effort to raise my profile.

I posted this on Richard Dawkins forum.

If you can help by posting links to my Channel elsewhere I would be grateful - thanks  Afro

    ------------------------------------------------

    Hi Everyone,

My name is Hassan - many of you know me. I have a Youtube Channel here:

    http://www.youtube.com/user/discussislam

I make videos critiquing religion - and Islam in particular!

I am making an effort to make my videos more visible so I can get my message across better. I think you will agree that there is far too much religious bullshit out there that gets a crazy number of views - yet the sane and more rational channels really don't get half as much as they should.

If you know my channel and like the videos - then please support it by subscribing.

If you don't know it, then please take a quick look - if you like it, then again I urge you to Subscribe.

The more subscribers, views and reps I get - the more visible they will be.

    Thanks and Best wishes,

    Hassan

PS also if you know of others who might be interested in my videos please let them know too - thanx

Hass, your channel is the dogs nads! Coherent and to the point. No sophistry of any kind. My own favourite is "Hit them" makes me laugh everytime I watch it.  Cheesy Cheesy
