  • Are you a vegetarian? Update-What about Pets, do you own any?
     OP - July 27, 2009, 12:28 PM

Hello people, I am just new here, am frequenting often since I joined the discussions.

I think when you belong to some "faith" its sometimes not easy to practice  your own personal choices related to what you eat or how you go about with endless rituals or customs. How about pets, are you allowed to have pets in Islam? I have never seen many muslims with pets so I dont know how much liberal they are on that one.

Now, they say dead meat is forbidden, arent all animals dead when they get slaughtered, they say blood is forbidden, but at the same time no meat can be obtained without shredding atleast a drop of blood.  In my opinion a slaughter is a slaughter, no matter HOW the animal is killed.

This is what I keep hearing from them

"Islam enjoys mercy and compassion for all living creatures. At the same time Islam maintains that Allah has created the earth and its wondrous flora and fauna for the benefit of mankind. It is upto mankind to use every resource in this world judiciously, as a niyamat (Divine blessing) and amanat (trust) from Allah"

In my opinion there is nothing compassionate about animal slaughter. But this 14th century argument certain does not apply in today's world. They eat meat because they like to eat bloody flesh and want to use the excuse "God said I can" to defend their indefensible position.

Some say you can be good muslim being a vegetarian as well, which part of the quaran they intend to follow. The part that says you must be compassionate to all creatures or the part that tells you it is OK to to slit  the throat and slaughter innocent animals.

What value is there to an advancing human being looking for God to take to religious practices that are devoid of compassion?

More intensive farming also results in the destruction of natural habitats, deforestation, inefficient land-use, animal disease, waste, increased water consumption, water pollution, global climate change and more fossil fuel consumption
A lot of people find it particularly upsetting to view images or even to read about the average life experience of a farmed animal.

With the growing awareness about the cruelty involved and learning more of the importance of healthy food, many people  go vegetarian.

How many of you here are,or trying to become vegetarians? Do you have pets? Would you readily give them away for slaughtering the same way your food was prepared?

I'm  not a veggie and I don't see the point.

If I did ever become one it  would be for fiscal reasons purely, IE meat is quite expensive in the UK and you can grow vegetables, thats the only reason I could do it for.

I dont care too much about animal welfare to be honest, I mean, it saddens me to hear shocking stories and we shoulld have some standards but apart from that you gotta do what you gotta do

I'll duck for now in preparation for the amount of abuse from you for not caring. Sorry, but I dont really see the need.

I'm somewhere between vegetarian and vegan, but I don't want to be. God created meat...and he sanctified it for our eating. I feel bad that I don't want to eat it.

Same as cheetah, used to be one, but then a bacon sandwich tempted me out of it.

Yes I own pets, and yes, I would hate to, but if it came down to a matter of survival because of some kind of major global disaster and I had no choice, I would eat my pets too.

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

VegetarianSoul - Its cultural norms that are in your way, not religion.  Take a look at every country in the world, regardless of religion, and you will see the same meat-eating behaviour.

I was going against the religion when I opted to be a vegetarian, it's turning your nose up at allahs gift, the gift of meat that he sent to replace abrahams son in the sacrifice.

All bullshit, but that's what I was told anyway.

That is the reason I'm thinking of eating meat. I just haven't been able to bring myself to do it.

I don't think I could do it. I think I could kill a random person on the street in order to survive a lot easier than I could kill my cat. This may sound like a total pussy thing to say (or incredibly callous, paradoxically), but my cat is part of my family, and the only people who rank above him are close friends/coworkers/union brothers and sisters, and human family. A choice between 100 random people I don't know in Philadelphia dropping dead tomorrow or my cat, I wouldn't hesitate to choose them over my cat. I guess it's just selfish actually. But I do really love the guy.

    fuck you

This is true, but lying down to be rubbed with mango sauce is probably not the same as being martyred for the faith.  Wink
