Now I'm really f'ing pissed off. My missus was on the phone to her sister in Pakistan and they were talking about fasting. My sis-in-law is religious and she asked my missus about who's fasting etc. She asked about me, my missus said that my reason for not fasting is because of my diabetes! (which is true) I shouted across that I'm an atheist and don't believe in it so why should I fast? My mum-in-law said "don't say that!. It'll have a bad impression on the kids and it's not a good thing to say". My sis-in-law asked what all the commotion is about. My missus just said that "mum and me are just arguing amongst themselves over something". This is the f'ing shite I gotta put up with from now on. My missus said that if I wanna broadcast my atheism then I should go ahead, but isn't in any hurry to tell them if they ask. I asked my missus if she was ashamed of my atheism and there was silence........ finmad

Ouch! That really sucks. Don't know how you too are able to have a relationship! Have you shown her the reasons for your apostasy? What does she think?

I sent her the hadith you put together. She has read some of them and said that she's in no hurry to get through all of them. She just said it's the same stuff over and over again. I think she's just ignoring the obvious to be honest. I might get a whole load together ready to fire off. BTW my mum rang after 20 mins ago and asked me to put on some islamic channel for my son to watch. I told her bluntly that I wasn't interested because I'm an atheist. She said since when? I told her that I'd mentioned it to her a few months ago. I can just see a whole load of questions and phone calls coming from my sisters. In that case I'll have my questions ready. I might dig through the sources on here for them.

Sounds like you are at that difficult in between stage.  Be prepared (but I must admit I enjoyed the whole process  on the whole - finally being able to tell people who I was and what I really felt).  Once people accept your atheism most wont bother with you and will try to avoid the subject, a few will keep trying to convince you (and I dont leave them alone either!).

You might want to focus on deism vs Islam, rather than atheism vs. Islam - otherwise it could too much too soon, like teaching a newbie rock climber to go up a vertical cliff-face on their first outing.

Hang in there 20yearstoolong. Could it be that your missus, is more afraid of losing family honor? It sounds like she is fine that you are atheist, just doesn't want her family to know. Quite honestly, my rents are somewhat more afraid of my extended family finding out more than just plainly what my beliefs are.

It always seems to be about honour. My mum wouldn't shut up about what our cousins might think if they found out!

I need to sort through my hadiths at some point and catagorise them properly. I've been saying this for a while now, I really should act on it at some point Tongue

the family honor thing is a toughie, but that depends on tolerance levels. relationships can be destroyed on account of faith differences. still there are many that can survive and even thrive if people agree to leave that part alone. we're all different in many ways, faith is just one angle. there is a good mixture in my own family and most seem to get along ok. in fact faith is rarely, if ever, discussed.

it gets a bit more complicated when it comes to teaching children. imo, the best approach is to give them all options and then allow them to choose freely. in the end you may have to agree to disagree without getting too emotional and hurling insults.

I'm on the same boat as you. My parents know I'm an apostate, but doesn't want my extended family to find out.

That's usually the case with most nominal muslims. The only time when the shit hits the fan is when your partner starts becoming a fundie. I think if they remain nominal and non practising it's harmless. They really are more concerned with the whole extended family thing. All it takes is a fundie in an extended family to start explaining all the "fiqh of marriage" to your partner for the whole thing to potentially spiral out. Once a third person starts telling them that the "nikkah" is void, then the focus is shifted to the partner, they don't like the feeling of having eyes focused on them.

Gosh. I hope your wife takes time to take in your views. Good luck with that.

The only option that's apparent in my extended family is to just be the breadwinner and stay quiet in not practicing Islam (unless there is a special, public occasion). The extended family might know it as an open secret, but at least the family honor is in tact and the fundi's don't have something to spend time on.

I remember this science mag article (the one below comes close) explaining that if REM sleep is deprived, then the mind is deprived of learning.

I think waking up early in the morning purely to pray in itself is a good indoctrinating mechanism.

Yeah I was thinking about this recently. The whole arrangement of Islam seems tailored to keeping an army of bandits busy enough and bribed enough to do whatever you want them to do. I wonder why. Thinking hard

    Events of today:
    - mum tries to wake me up in the morning: I complain I got to bed at 1am and am not hungry by 3am anyway.
    - mum's annoyed I don't read extra Surah's/Quran like all the good boys do in my family (she's great at exaggerating).
    - aunt from LA calls up and asks if I'm fasting (they're everywhere!)
    - mum has been asking me why I don't drive to the nearest Mosque with my younger brother every night for Terabi namaz which last about 1.5 hours. I complain I'm doing a certification. (Well I am, to be honest.)
    - drinking water and chewing on a cereal bar until it gets to 8pm.
    - mum's gotten into watching Zakir Naik on Peace TV in the evenings, arrgh.

I think Islam works on South Asian housewives well: they don't have much purpose especially when the kids have grown up, so the only commitment there is left is Islam - which can get horribly addictive.

All that said, she does cook the most excellent food Smiley

Good to hear she has calmed down. Perhaps when she realizes that it hasn't changed you practically, she'll be okay with it. Btw, nice avator, interesting person. Afro

My Dad usually listens to radio news or Mohd Rafi in his car, or he just drives in silence.

BUT... today we went for a drive and he put on a CD with an Islamic lecture on!  banghead

I dunno who the lecture was by.  It was in urdu and it sounded like Junaid Jamshed, but trust me he was talking so much nonsense and coming out with the stupidest analogies.

He said something along the lines of:

"You know how you make a chapatti?  You can't make it without the ingredients can you?  Without all the ingredients, the flour, the water, and the time, the effort, you will never accomplish the finished product will you?

Then how can you become accomplished in your deen if you don't put in the time and effort too?  You already have all the ingredients in the Quran and the sunnah.  So why don't you utalise the ingredients and your time and effort to accomplish what you were created to do by Allah subhanawatallah?"

Then in the background you heard a faint... "Subhannallah"... from the listeners.  Roll Eyes

My Dad was sat their listening (bless him) but I just wanted to take the CD out and snap it in half!

I bet he is really ashamed of stuff like "sanwali salooni si mehbooba" now! Does he ever say anything about his past career with vital signs?
