But perhaps it is an opportunity for discussion with someone who sees herself as a relatively open minded Arab.

    http://www.rebelliousarabgirl.net/2009/08/25/why-are-muslims-turning-atheists/

I don't know if you are familiar with this girl's blog.  It's quite popular with the English speaking youth who are into blogging in the Middle East.

But to me, the reasoning about why she thinks "some Muslims turn atheist" wasn't reasoning at all.  It was a classic example of the lack of critical thought in the Arab educational systems, and the tendency of both Arabs and Muslims to blame outside influence for what they perceive as shortcomings (I don't see Muslims becoming atheist as a shortcoming, but she does).  Sometimes I am disheartened when I see the young generation exhibiting this same lack of reasoning and thought skills as the generation before.

Anyway, her post on her cousins converting to Christianity was more offensive to me, LOL, and I think about as highly of that religion as I do of Islam.

Islam for honour, Islam for tribe, Islam for identity - but not for thinking and pondering upon it.

From what I've read, I don't think of her as very open minded....in fact, I'm trying not to get anoyed or angry at her posts.

Btw I love how she wrote this at the end of her Muslims turning atheist post:

NOTE! Please, if you want to reply to this post, avoid talking about science, evolution, or the story of Adam & Eve. I don?t have time for never ending debates, and stick to the point of this article. Muslims that turned Atheists, or people who lack faith in their religion. Thank you.

    Talk about evasive.

Oh she's not.  She *thinks* she is.

Just finished reading but was glad see the comments posted by someone called 'Maria' (go to pg.1). Very articulate in knocking over many of the Islamic claims.

Knowing Islam is the only true religion we do not allow propagation of any other religion. How can we allow building of churches and temples when their religion is wrong? Thus we will not allow such wrong things in our countries. - Zakir Naik
