  • What's so bad about pork?
     OP - November 19, 2009, 08:22 PM
    I was wondering whether there is any reasonable justification to ban pork? Does anyone know why Judaism banned eating it? Is it really that harmful to eat by primitive societies (cause of tapeworms, etc)? Are other meats safer for them? Can anyone shed some light on this issue?

    For me it became clear during a trip to a village in India.  Imagine a rural village, no flush toilets, poo just goes down a shoot, and gos to the side of the house/shack.

    As soon as this happens you often see the pigs in the neighbourhood squealing with delight as they nestle their snouts in human dung and begin to scoff it.

    Imagine if you existed 3000 years ago, would you consider this meat clean, perhaps an outbreak of ancient swine flu might have cemented the deal. Thats why I think it was made haram

    The common explanation I've heard is that due to a pigs tendency to root up vegetation, they aren't good to have tooling about in desert environments where arable land is rare and precious.

    While we're on this subject, anyone know why circumcision came about in Judaism, and therefore Islam?

    Hitchens has a chapter called "A short digression on the pig war or why heaven hates ham?". There is an interesting part in it, which is his own theory. For those of you who have this book, the chapter makes an interesting read.

    That was a covenant between Abraham and God. Can't remember why though!

    I don't have the book on this PC, If you have still got the book take a look. I think it was something about cannibalism and how the pigs squeals reminded the iron age tribes of the sqeals from human sacrifice.

    Circumcision pre-dates Judaism.

    It was an ancient Egyptian rite.

    How exactly did they do circumcisions back then? Nowadays it's done with the help of local anesthesia. Surely it must hurt a lot without it!

    It irritates me when Muslims try to rationalise the ban on pork with health and medical justifications.

    The arguments they use, such as the worm, or health benefits can be applied to most types of commonly farmed meat.

    Pork also goes bad quickly in conditions such as those in the middle east...

    I beg to differ. The reason pork is the most popular meat in the world is because it can be kept for so long through curing.

    Not if you are living in rural Pakistan, India or Bangladesh! they still have  bearded men with knives coming to take your foreskin off ;-)

    I read it, was a bit of a disappointment tbh. As far as I know (according to be boyfriend who's read some reports) humans actually taste like chicken, not pork wacko

    There was nothing about squeals, just cannibalism. Hitchens also said pigs were for the well-off.

    Pork is haram because its so good. What's a breakfast without bacon? Or a sandwhich without ham? Of course its haram, its so good.

    Then again, considering where Islam came from, would you want a drunk Muslim? a sober Muslim is already too much to handle as it is.

    Pleasurable things and nonpleasurable things that lead to Muhammad or whoever is king not controling is subjects is what is Haram, I am only referring to the pleasurable haram as good.  Smiley

    This means both breeding close relatives together to produce and enhance characteristics, whilst killing those who are too inbred (causing inbreeding depression and poor functioning of organisms (paralysis etc.)). Dogs and cats breed with their mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers, I don't remember cats being seen as impure in Islamic doctrine. Neither are rabbits as far as I know, these definitely breed within families and are eaten as a source of food as well. Your mothers point is moot!  

    Goats eat everything and I remember them being a primary source of food in Arabia and Arabic speaking nations; if I remember correctly. Heck, chickens will eat dead chicken flesh if given it, they are allowed!

    The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)  said: "The Prophet Ibrahim circumcised himself when he was eighty years old and he circumcised himself with an axe." (Related by Bukhari, Muslim & Ahmad.)

    I get the impression that the rules in this religion are actually if it is good for you it isn't allowed, and if it is bad for you it is allowed!

    But why is it so binary and digital?  Where is the analogue, little taste of beer or bacon, little flutter on the geegees, the little loan with interest to a neighbour?

    Pigs were massively important as a food source in Northern Europe. This, apparently, is the reason that Christians are allowed to eat it. "if you ain't gonna let us eat pig, we ain't gonna join your religion".

    The best explanation for not eating pigs that I've seen is snobbery. Poor people tended to eat them. Therefore, rich people avoided them. This developed into a taboo.

    Incidentally, did you know that cabbage was thought to be poisonous in medieval England?
