     Wow. That cannot be hygienic. Also those are mosques that I wouldn't mind being segregated in.

    Most of the "scholars" of Yemen don't consider khat to be haraam. It would be like making coffee haraam in America, or bad teeth haraam in Britain.  grin12

    Oh, I wasn't comparing the drug itself to coffee, I was just saying the practice is so widespread there, anyone looking to ban it without indisputable evidence would have a fat chance of anyone taking heed. I've never tried it, though. I don't think it does anything some good Kush and alcohol couldn't do.

    Actually khat doesn't sound that much different to caffeine. Both are simple alkaloids. Both can result in mild psychological dependence and physical symptoms. Main difference is coffee wont wreck your undies.

    I always understood a completely opposite, lenient view of sex. The Salafi women's group I was involved in was allll about sex. They loved talking about it, and were of the strong opinion that between a husband and wife sex was meant to be ENJOYED. And fully, damnit.

    Everyone likes to vilify verse 2:223 ("Your wives are as a tilth unto you; so approach your tilth when or how ye will.") as treating women like property. But that wasn't the point at all. Rather, it's meant to say there are no strict rules on how and when to have sex. There are only two restrictions: no period sex and no anal sex. Beyond that, anything is fair game, so enjoy yourselves!

    As for oral sex, here is an anecdote I heard third hand from a friend of a sheikh's wife. A man came to the sheikh asking about oral sex, but he was too shy to ask outright so he instead tried a euphemism:

    Man: Is it ok to eat my wife's... apple?
    Sheikh: Yes, brother, apples are halal.
    Man: No, I mean can I eat her apple?
    Sheikh: Yes, of course, all fruit is halal!
    Man: No I don't mean an apple, I mean my wife's apple.  Wink
    Sheikh: Yes, if she wants to give you an apple you can eat it!

    He wasn't getting it so finally the man spelled it out for him. The sheikh was a little dumbfounded, but after considering for a moment he said, yes I don't see why not.

    He later told his wife about the strange request, and she confirmed it was a pretty normal thing. So he said, WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME? Cheesy

    There are different attitudes towards sex. I think that every type of perspective on sex can be "supported" by Islamic teachings. You have salafis like you mentioned, and they you have other salafis and their shuyookh who are very strict and rigid when it comes to sexuality. You can always white wash texts, or you can be very critical of them (for example the "tilth" verse). =)

    I think that there is a sort of disconnect between the attitudes of many conservative scholars towards sex and the prohibitions found in the text. I was always of the opinion that Islamic texts allow for a great deal of flexibility when it comes to sex, with the only two forbidden acts being anal sex and period sex.

    As I’ve said before, a great deal of fiqh classes have to do with the topics of sex and ritual purification, so I was often in the position to ask for clarification regarding specific acts. I can say that most Saudi scholars, at least, were not nearly as imaginative in that department as most westerner’s tend to be. One issue I was unsure of, for example, was whether or not a woman would need to take a ghusl after manual or oral stimulation from her spouse. I thought it was a legitimate, necessary question to ask. When I asked the shaikh about it, though, he went off on a tangent about how those were “ugly” acts that should never be done. Grin I still didn’t listen to him. Grin

    I also remember once in the prophet’s mosque a questioner asked the scholar regarding the permissibility of a woman swallowing semen. I was interested to hear the answer because many schools of thought do not consider semen to be najas, as it is the fluid from which human beings are created and it does not stand to reason that human beings would be created from something impure. The shaikh went on a rant about how there was “no benefit” in oral sex sense it did not lead to procreation, and that “only animals” do this sort of thing. He berated the questioner for a good couple of minutes about having the audacity to ask such a question.

    That said, there are many more ahadith that lead me to think that Muhammad was a bit more liberal in bed. There are hadith that say he would “place his head between” his wives legs. I’m not sure what good that would do  if it is not a euphemism for oral sex. There is also a hadith in which he ordered his followers to do “everything apart from entering” women on their periods. Again, I always took that advice at face value. A carte blanche, if you will.

    I think that westerners who adopt a salafi interpretation won’t find much in the text that would limit their sexuality. Most of the restrictions seem to come from the less than imaginative scholars.

    Agree, I think it has to do what attitude you have about "honor" and what kind of acts are "befitting" for the believers. Personally, just as you say, I never payed any attention to those scholars who had a very frigid attitude towards sex. But that just shows how you can never have religion without culture, they are closely interconnected.

    By that logic, period blood shouldn't be impure, since it is nothing more than the shedding of an unused endometrium: the direct source of nutrients and oxygen for the fetus.

    Still, that would be a modern apologist excuse as I'm pretty sure they didn't know what the fuck a period actually was. Far as I know at least.

    Yeah. There isn't a lot of logic involved in determining what is najas and what is not. I remember thinking even back then how strange it is that the saliva of a dog is considered najas although it is relatively harmless, while the saliva of a komodo dragon, which is teeming with parasites and can actually kill you, would ostensibly be considered tahir.

    I think Islam's general fear of everything that comes out of the female body is primarily at play here. It calls to mind the fact that the urine of a nursing boy is considered pure, while the urine of a nursing girl is considered impure. I remember a shaikh gave the explanation that the penis serves to "filter" the pee to make it pure. (I remember this because he Arabicized the word filter in a way I'd never heard - "yufaltiru" Grin)

    As with most rulings in Islam though, Muhammad did things that completely contradicted what he taught. For example, there was a well in Madinah called the well of Budhaa', if my memory serves me correctly, that was used as a sort of dumping ground for trash, animal carcasses, and the rags women would use from their periods. Muhammad would make wudhu in this well and when his followers asked him about it, he said "if water is more than two qulla, nothing can make it impure." Of course, there are about a million different interpretations as to exactly what a qulla is, but it shows Muhammad really did not understand much about germ theory and the spread of disease.

    It's all about combing through these random, obscure utterances attributed to the prophet and trying to make some sort of sense out of them all. It really is a complete mess. Muhammad was reported to have done all sorts of contradictory things as well, so it becomes impossible to have a firm ruling. So many examples come to mind. Muhammad would tell his followers "Don't face the Qibla while taking a dump." Then, one of his wives would come along with another narration and say, "I once walked in on the prophet taking a dump and he was facing the qibla." So, now you have to combine the two into some profound, ad hoc lesson. "This shows us that it is generally disliked to face the Qibla while taking a dump. But if one is in a situation where he is not sure of the direction of the Qibla, or if he forgets, then there is no harm upon him." And so on. There are many, many examples like that.

    And it's usually Muhammad's wives that got him into trouble with his double speak. Muhammad would say "don't bathe in leftover bathwater that another person has used." Then his wife Maimuna came along and told the world that he would bathe in her leftover bath water.

    Muhammad would tell people not to sleep after sex without taking a bath, then Aisha would come along and say that he went to sleep after sex without touching water.

    Of course, we can trust the ahadith about as much as we can trust any other 200 year long rumor, but when people talk about Islamic law being so "perfect" and "comprehensive," I can't help but sigh because even at its most basic, mundane level, it is anything but.

    Now I want to track down all these contradictory hadiths you mentioned and put them all on one thread to show muslims how silly they actually are.

    Once my dad told me to take something for when i was sick because it was mentioned in hadith and then i made a comment about how I don't see doctor recommending that and then he went into a rage about how I dared to question the authenticity and reliability of the hadiths.  Roll Eyes

    Or that the contradictory hadiths must be read together so that we can understand that there are exceptions or that the "forbidden" part was in fact only "discouraged".
