I have a friend who claims this is the only verse is the whole Quran where "daraba" has been translated to mean "beat" and it should mean "leave" as in divorce.

Is he correct?

Is "daraba" in 4;34 or has it been altered from another word like zaik does with egg for the shape of the earth?

It seems your friend is not sure what word is being used for 'beat them'. The word used for 'beat them' is 'waidriboohunna' not 'daraba'. It is also used in other places in the Qur'an and all translated as beat/strike/scourge.

4:34 Alrrijalu qawwamoona AAala alnnisai bima faddala Allahu baAAdahum AAala baAAdin wabima anfaqoo min amwalihim faalssalihatu qanitatun hafithatun lilghaybi bima hafitha Allahu waallatee takhafoona nushoozahunna faAAithoohunna waohjuroohunna fee almadajiAAi waidriboohunna fain ataAAnakum fala tabghoo AAalayhinna sabeelan inna Allaha kana AAaliyyan kabeeran

If we take 8:12 the word 'faidriboo', 'waidriboo' is used and translated as 'strike' as in strike off their heads, strike off the very tips of their fingers.

4:34 says 'admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them;' It does say leave them, but not in the divorce sense of the word. More in the confinement in their rooms to contemplate their punishment.

Of course our Arabic speakers would be able to shine more light on this.

If it really means "leave", then you have to ask the question...

Why would 99% of Muslim translators translate it as "beat"? How can they all get it wrong?

Why would so many Muslim translators translate a Quranic verse to make it sound WORSE?

Just tell your friend that it means beat, it has always meant beat, and it will always mean beat.

Not beat "lightly" either. There is no mention of "lightly".

It means BEAT. Full stop.

And thats the bottom line. It is just so obviously suspect when a word has been translated as "BEAT" for nearly 1400 years by all the greatest and wisest scholars, yet now suddenly you have these western Muslims poppin out of nowhere claiming otherwise. I mean give me a furkin break.

The Quran commands you to beat your wife. Deal with it.

One resource that is very helpful for those with little Arabic:

With this website, it's extraordinarily easy to look up all the uses of a word, all the different translations of a verse, and all the related words stemming from the same root. For example, take 4:34:

And the word used:

We can see that there is a strong alternative meaning for the root, in many forms, but that it is to "set forth," not to leave. This is used in many other contexts, and it means to "set forth," not leave. So the "leave" interpretation is both contextually and linguistically unlikely, I think.
