     OP - January 21, 2010, 01:49 PM

    Hello, people.

I'll keep this introduction brief and vague, for reasons most of you understand, I'm sure.

I'm a woman in my mid-twenties, born and living in a North-African country, muslim by birth and 'choice' until very recently. Actually I'm not sure if I qualify as an ex-muslim since I have not come out to anyone around me, and I don't yet feel up to doing it, but let's say that I no longer feel that Islam is my thing. Later I will try to give a detailed description of the process that led to where I currently am, in that blog and bios section.

Other than that, I'm a dedicated heavy metal fan, and my other great passion is books.

I have been a lurker of this forum for a few weeks, and I'm looking forward to interesting exchanges with its members.

    Cheers!

What's your opinion of religions in general now? Do you still believe in supernatural beings or are you becoming a naturalist? A naturalist is somebody who thinks that only the physical world exists.

    Welcome Naerys.

I don't think proclamations to the outside world are what make an ex muslim, I think it comes in that personal moment when you admit to yourself.   Smiley

I do like Slayer quite a bit (mostly the first four albums), though I can't say I listen to them that much these days. I'm more into traditional heavy metal (Sabbath, Maiden, Priest, Manilla Road, Brocas Helm) and doom metal (Candlemass, Reverend Bizarre, Pagan Altar, Witchfinder General...) as well as thrash and some death metal. I also listen to lots of non-metal stuff, mostly folk (English and Irish) and classical.

That's a good one. I believe religions are man-made (more convinced of that with each passing day) and that they are a tool for keeping people under control(intentionally or not).  At times I really feel silly for believing in it all those years. If God exists, then he certainly isn't the god of Mohammed, Jesus or Moses. For now I'd say I'm still trying to figure it all out.

Well, if that's the general consensus, then I suppose I am an ex-muslim (though one who still prays and fasts, but that's for... practical reasons  Wink )

I am not one of them, but I wonder if this is true & why this is so?

I love Iron Maiden! They are the best. Not a death metal or thrash fan, but like heavy guitars with lots of distortion but there must be some melody for me to like. Scorpions are excelent too.

Best guitarists: Steve Vai, Malmesteen, Eddi Van Halen, and last but not least Mark Knophler Afro

    Greetings and salutations, Naerys.

You have great taste in music!  Iron Maiden & Black Sabbath (only the original tho) are two of my most favourite metal bands.  I even got to see Sabbath live TWICE when the original members had their reunion around 10 years ago.

From what I've seen of North African (well... Morocco anyway) and S. Asian cultures (Pakistan) I think you are better off being North African as I noticed that women in Morocco seem to have more autonomy than women in Pakistan.  Plus, all the Arab/N. African women I have known will not take bullshit from men the way that many South Asian women do.

Welcome Naerys, let us know how you came to find this forum.  Also is it just me, or is there an over-representation of heavy metal fans on this site.

I am not one of them, but I wonder if this is true & why this is so?

Several months ago, when I was very confused about what was happening to me, spiritually, I ran a google search about "Quran's scientific miracles debunked" (or something like that). Because I was always hearing people using the argument of "scientific miracles" as proof that Islam is the one true religion. Well, after reading a few articles I stumbled upon a very interesting thread on this very forum regarding that subject. When I saw the forum's title, though, I thought "woah, wait a minute! I'm not ready for that ex-muslim label!" and I fled. But a few months after that I came back and started reading it regularly and here I am Smiley

As for the heavy metal thing, I'd say that the very core of the music is anti-'establishment' and anti-religious. I don't just mean the satanist, evil corpse-paint wearing black metal bands. It's the essence of the music ever since its beginning. The message happens to be anti-christian because the bands come from a christian background. For ten years I used to just brush it aside, saying it didn't concern me and I just love the music, but it really make you think. I'd say that it has had a great impact on me and what I have become (though that could be indirectly, but I'll explain that later). I think it's rather funny yet tragic that metalheads where I live support this ideology thinking it's purely aesthetics, and yet claim to be good muslims in spite of it. But hey, I've been there...

All are amazing, to various degrees. I can't believe I omitted Mercyful Fate/King Diamond from my favorite bands list because they should be up there. Celtic Frost are classic and so is Cathedral though i admit, I haven't listened much to the latter.
