  • Question: What is your position on smoking bans?
  • -Outlaw smoking and tobacco production - 4 (15.4%)
  • -Ban smoking in ALL places except private residence - 2 (7.7%)
  • -Ban smoking in enclosed public places and work places (status quo in the UK) - 4 (15.4%)
  • -Introduce a system of quotas in which every town council allocates a number of permits for smoking bars, restaurants, and coffee shops - 5 (19.2%)
  • -Ban smoking only in enclosed public areas. Allow private institutions (restaurants, bars, shopping centres..etc) to do as they wish - 9 (34.6%)
  • -Lift all smoking bans except in hospitals - 0 (0%)

    I'm just angry because I can't light up in any bar or pub in the UK  finmad (except in freezing Beer Gardens of course)

    I picked option 4. In fact I thought it all up. I wonder if anybody has thought of this brilliant idea  cool2

    However, my heart is with option 5 as I believe the government has no right dictating what private establishments can do within their premises.
    Besides, in a free market, consumer choice determines what suppliers of any service will do. Thus, with time there's gonna be a ratio of smoking to non-smoking establishments that meets the demands of the consumers.

    Looking forward to reading your opinions.


    EDIT: I've changed my mind. I'm going with 5.

    They should ban it everywhere except private areas or special designated areas of course. I hate smoking vomit

    What do you mean by "private areas"?

    If I buy a piece of land and build a bar on it, would it be considered a private area?

    Ohhh. Maybe I used the wrong word. I meant like houses, apartments etc. Like smoking at home is fine.

    It should be banned in all enclosed areas except private businesses and institutions that apply for a permit. So #4.

    Another option is to have well ventilated ares for smoking in pubs, restaurants, trains etc.. But, unfortunately, that's not the idea... It'll be smoking licenses next.  Angry

    My parents have both been smoking for thirty years and are both very healthy people, I have no problem with it and can tolerate it but I personally don't smoke.

    I voted for...

    -Ban smoking only in enclosed public areas. Allow private institutions (restaurants, bars, shopping centres..etc) to do as they wish

    Keep it banned in public enclosed areas, let private institutions decide for themselves and from there customers can decide where they go. Seems like a fair balance.

    Other-- Establish stronger workplace indoor air quality standards. Nothing specific about tobacco smoke. If these standards can be achieved while allowing smoking (say through good ventilation/air filtration systems) then no problem. Failing that, I would support a total repeal of all smoking bans.

    Option 4.  I remember hearing one story in which a pub owner, who had a pub that had 2 sides to it, with solid doors between etc, turned one side into smoking, and one side into non smoking, the smoking section had smoking staff, and yet the pub owner still got done for it.  Madness.  Roll Eyes

    Even though I'm not a smoker, it just doesn't feel the same going to the pub without the smell of smoke and nicotine in the air, cigarette stubs in the urinal when you go to take a leak, and an ashtray peppered with ash in the middle of your table as you sup your pint. Its just not the same anymore.

    Perhaps they were thinking of the poor lung patient having a ciggie break for relief during stressful surgery. He would even need to exhale, smoke would be billowing out of his body.

    I voted for:

    I smoke occasionally and at times find the smell of cigarette smoke nauseating but I still feel it's a person's right to smoke if the want to although I do agree that in certain places, like hospitals for instance smoking should not be allowed.

    This whole craze of trying ban smoking everywhere and enforcing a healthy lifestyle on everyone is just too Orwellian for my liking.  I've had enough of the health nazis from living in California for nearly 15 years.

    I don't know Q-Man, just sounds impracticable. I mean how would that work? will the government force private business to meet these standards?
    It also sounds expensive.

    You do realize it means private premises as in premises that are privately owned, but may still be places that are open to the public, such as coffee shops, restaurants? If you did realize that when you wrote what you did, then does that mean you believe that you should be able to allow murder on your private premises? The similarity being that murder and smoking in public harms people other than the person doing the action.

    If a coffee shop labels itself as a smoking institution then everybody entering into that place is complicit in the understanding that there will be second hand smoke around, and that's exactly how a free world should operate. Nobody will be forced inside the coffee shop.
