  • Can you attend "The Big Question" Sunday Morn Birmingham?
     OP - June 24, 2010, 11:06 AM

I have had a request from a BBC researcher to recommend someone to present the ex-Muslim view on the Ad Campaign by a Muslim organistation - to improve the image of Islam - that will be discussed on the show.

If you can attend please PM me urgently.

Wow, great. I hope someone stands up and goes for it, this sort of thing needs an ex-Muslim voice.  Afro

Not me, but do you know if they offerring a fee as that might incentivise somebody else to attend?

If someone is not sure about going, and they're cash strapped, then an extra ?300 cash might make the difference between them going or not going.

It might also make the difference between them getting their heads blown off by a sawn-off shotgun, but thats a separate story and I dont want to put anyone off  grin12.

In fairness though the gay atheist and the hindu woman did give a semi-balanced outlook on the question.

While I hold Gita Saghal in very high regard, I don't think she was the appropriate opposing voice to this "Big Question". She's against fundamentalism, and she debates from that standpoint very well. However, this wasn't about fundamentalism, but about Islam and the worthiness of portreying a positive image. The standpoint of the debate should have been about Islam, and that potreying a positive image is essentially dishonest.

But I guess I can hardly talk, since I didn;t volunteer to go and debate from this standpoint, so my post is pretty hypocritical

What a load of bollocks! That woman behind this PR thing must be a liar or ignoramus.

Has she ever read the books ahadith, exegesis or fiqh?

And Mehdi Hasan finally said something that I agree with. That is, that some Muslims actually do bear responsibility for Islam's bad image, contrary to what that woman seems to say.

These kinds of discussions are far too complex to have in 15 mins. I don't know why they don't devote more time to them.

And I saw Rationalizer with his hand up the whole time. Shame they didn't let him speak. Might have heard something fairly sensible by comparison to the rest of the speakers.

To be honest, I found her very similar to my parents (who are liberal sufi converts). Sad as it is to say of one's parents, but they are by and large totally ignorant (even after 40 years of having the opportunity to dig into what they claim to believe)

Why didn't anyone make the very simple - and obvious - point:

Instead of trying to convince non-Muslims that Islam is a religion of Peace they should be trying to convince Muslims!

Was this what Gita Saghal trying to get to in a very roundabout way?

If so she did a poor job of it.

Maryam Namazie was invited but couldn't make it (and asked if I could go, but I couldn't make it either.)

I'm not necessarily saying that her interpretation is wrong, but she seems to say that her comparatively liberal interpretation is the main one, and that 'extreme' interpretations are the esoteric ones.

Orthodox Islamic jurisprudence is certainly 'extreme' in some respects, but it isn't by any means accepted by only a few, fringe Muslims.

How could you not see him Islame? He was sitting next to the guy who's son converted. He's even visible in the second screenshot of the youtube video (IE, the picture you see before it starts playing) with his hand right up. 2nd/3rd row up, second from last on the right stand? Grey tshirt, glasses? Hand up the whole 40 minutes of the first and last questions? Gosh.

Be careful she may be an ex-Muslim member here before too long - and could read that comment!

I thought Mehid Hassan was a really slippery character.
