hang in there dude - you'll feel great once this pahse is over - trust me. the most awesome thing would be if you could then get to the stage where you can go on and off smoking without it being a big deal - that way you get to enjoy smoking without serious risk to your health and it not having control over you.

i think it's mainly a psychological thing rather than the nicotine addiction - it's important to try not to think of cigarettes as any big deal

Try telling that to me when I dont feel like someone is wringing my neck with two hands whilst his buddy is driving a truck over my chest.  I might be a little more receptive to your hunch then  Afro

I think it depends on how mature & developed your nicotine receptors are.  If you dont smoke much, I doubt your addicted

Anyhow, todays the fourth day and still hanging in there (by a whisker).  The thought of having a cigarette while sitting on the park bench in the garden, seems like heaven.  Wish I enjoyed cigs that much when I was a smoker.

So BD, how you getting on?  Have you cracked yet or still going strong?

    BlackDog:

I told this to a smoker and it freaked her out so much she tried quitting; so I'll tell you.

Cigarette smoke contains known carcinogens.  Carcinogens are substances that MUTATE your DNA.

If you get a mutation in, for example, a gene that helps regulate cellular reproduction, and the cell starts reproducing indefinitely, you have cancer.

Inside your airways sticky mucous is secreted that absorbs foreign particles.  There are little hair like growths that are driven by motor proteins that help move the mucous up your airways.  Nicotine causes these hair like growths to stop functioning so that your airways can no longer function normally in removing any foreign substances.

Just because there are old smokers doesn't mean that even these survivors have not suffered serious consequences to their health through smoking.  Most smokers do suffer, chances are you'll be one of them if you continue.  However, there are genetic factors involved, and lifestyle factors such as exercise, nutrition, etc.

At the end of the day you should need no other reason to quit than it is haram and Allah will punish you if you do not desist  Snap out of it

I could use a cigarette right about now Grin But I'm still holding on. Good work Islame. Let's celebrate it with a drink. We'll just trade addictions.

I kinda quit a month ago. I think going to the gym has helped as I am getting better at the treadmill and smoking would be counter productive.  Also the thought of taking an early exit and missing my girl's weddings and grandkids being born seems unfair to them so I try and keep that in mind.

Well I can make acceptions. There are some people who I see that I just have to smoke with. It's a social thing. I just got back from a beach vacation we took with another family. The guy is a recovering alcoholic and smoking is his one guilty pleasure. I felt obligated to have one with him every now and then.

actually scary stories would be good

    ok

    1. One of my old relatives has smoked for years and years and quit about 2 decades ago. His lungs are permanently damaged, and his lungs cannot tolerate cold or even cool temperatures. His bedroom is always hot and humid. He also has to use some weird inhaler device once or twice a day.
    2. Another old relative smoked just as much and quit around the same time too. Only he had to get surgery and use one of his veins from his legs to fix his heart.
    3. A friend of mine tried to quit cold turkey, and fainted.

I don't know if that sounds scary to you. To me it's not scary, but more metal! eddie grin12

Aw man, so next time we're hanging out at a non-smoking bar that means you aren't gonna duck outside with me for a smoke? That's unfair to ME! Fuck your kids and future grandkids.

My Grandfather died of Lung cancer, but he smoked a pack a day for over fifty years. He died at 76 (not bad actually). I never smoked more than 5 a day. Last year was 3 a day. Now I have officially quit (with acceptions) Q-Man you fall into the acception category.

It almost seems as if there are more smokers here than amongst a random average collection of people. I wonder what that says about being an ex-muslim and a forum addict...

Should add this to the smoking thread.

This is fucked up.  I read this (can't remember when) and thought it was terrible then too.  My child could scream and scream and I still woudn't give them a smoke.

They try to get sweets and coca cola the same way, but they know it won't happen.  I;m strict.
