The Italians were always too hard for the Muslim invaders.  They just told them to GTFO  finmad

Hard? Italians?  Cheesy  Italians did not exist during those times either...  They were a whole pandemonium of small city states, constantly fighting with each other and with other countries.

A mere 200 years in their long, long history and it wasn't exactly the Italians but the Sicilians and us with them.

Well, yeah, especially since "Italy" is a fairly recent political invention ^_^

It always amuses me how most people, anywhere in the world, seems to think there is some sort of "Italianness" that has always been uniting Italy.

It's proof of some quite successful propaganda during the unification.

    Lol, I don't give a shit.
I think Italy was doomed the moment it was created.

They forced a bunch of different cultures together, trying to wipe out centuries of historical, economical and cultural differences. And the result is a bunch of people who do not give a shit about their own civilization ^_^

Maybe I need to brush up on my history but I don't think Italy was ever occupied by Muslims. Only sicily was.

Well truth be told the Ottomans did hold Otranto in Southern Italy for a while. Then the sultan died and they could not get re-reinforcements and so they had to retreat.

Well, funny story is, that a quite similar discussion was going on on rd.net two years ago. Only that it was meant seriously.

Someone argued that honour killings originated from Islam and don't exist outside the muslim world. So I pointed to some examples of honour killings in Italy and the reply actually was that these were "caused by Islam because Italy had been occupied by Islam for some time"...

Is there any racism against the Southerners in the North? what about the Lega Norde? does their rhetoric contain racist connotations?

L'ho imparato a scuola. Ma' abbiamo molti canali Italiani sulla TV come RAI, Italia 1, Canale 5..  Lo rendono il processo più facile.   Mi piace pratticare pero',  L'Italiano e' una bella lingua.

Yep from the Lega Nord types.  They are separatists....  If I'm not mistaken the Southern Italians and Sicilians especially are called Terrani or something..  which is a derogatory term meaning farmer or rural person.

Ah, you are asking the right man ;P

Yeah there is quite some racism between Northerners and Southerners, everywhere.
Mostly it stays at just teasing level, nothing more than making fun of each other.
But sometimes it goes beyond that, especially when politics are concerned.

Lega Nord in the 90s used this intra-national racism a lot, now it's just using xenophobia against the non-Italians (especially since a lot of Southerners living in the North are now voting for Lega Nord).

What sucks is that I like the secessionist and reformist ideas of Lega Nord, but I am completely against their stupid xenophobic rhetorics. So I am very torn on where I stand politically.
Same for when it comes to the Italian right wing parties.

I very much agree with their ideas of economic liberalism, but I cannot stand them when it comes to social issues such as religion, scientific research, marriages, euthanasia, liberalization of drugs and prostitution... cause they are conservative about all those points.

On the other hand, the Italian left has NO ideas. All their political program is "Berlusconi wants to own the country, and we need to change something to improve things... (but they do not say what should be changed or how)" :S

    Not exactly.
Such racism is present in the non-separatist Italians as well.
And it's also present in Southerners towards Northerners.

I see that same attitude when I look at the whole Europe itself though: North vs South Europe.
The same thing is recreated inside Italy as well.

    Lol yes.

I think the "most noticeable foreign groups" in Italy are, in order: Romanians, Asians, North Africans.
But, most Romanians are almost unable to tell apart from Italians at a first glance.
So that means Asians totally stand out.

But, tbh, I think most Italians are not much bothered by Asians because they tend to mix with the population slowly and quietly.
What bothers them the most about Asians is that they are fierce competitors in the job market.

    I totally LOVE Asian immigrants.

I do not want to sound racist and shit, but they are generally wonderful and respectful towards the culture they immigrate into.
Unlike, for example, Italians who emigrate elsewhere and whine about how it's not like their beloved Italy *sad violin*.

Yes I read that after unification the Italian government actively encourage emigration of Southerners to America, Brazil...etc because they regarded them as an economic burden.

But sometimes it goes beyond that, especially when politics are concerned.

What do you mean by "beyond that"?
If I understand correctly, Lega Norde's main policy is to let the North keep more of its tax returns as opposed to distributing them according to population. Right?

I guess I just learnt something new. Never knew Italy was a major immigrant destination for asians.

Thats true everywhere. Asians are the quickest to integrate and even as a distinct ethnic minority they are generally very law-abiding and polite. Except for old asian people on buses, they just yell like its downtown beijing.

By "asians" I mean east asians , ie chinese, japanese, koreans, vietnamese etc. AKA small eyes.

    What kind of reformist ideas?

    Beyond that as in...
Sometimes the Northerners just cannot deal with the general lack of civic sense that's typical of Southerners.
And sometimes the Southerners cannot deal with the lack of chilled attitude that's typical of Northerners.

The main policy of Lega Nord WAS secession.
It's just a dream, though. But they like to aim high.
Their currently more realistic goal is to turn Italy into a federal country, so that each region-state could use part of its own taxes directly as they see fit, to deal with their own problems without having to go through the central government. That's the reform I am talking about.

Currently, tax money is not exactly divided according to population, because the South is, unfortunately, a huge money sink due to the special funds for the South that have been going on for decades and that get wasted into nothingness thanks to the extremely high degree of corruption and organized crime down there.

Unfortunately, that lame poster about immigrants having "more rights" is partially true.

As in, technically, if you are some poor immigrant (even illegal, in many cases) institutions do give you an advantage over tax paying locals when it comes to dealing with the bureaucracy.

But, in practice, that is totally eclipsed by the fact that dealing with the Italian bureaucracy is a total hell especially if you are not used to it and are not a fluent speaker.

I had some first hand experience with all this when I helped a Korean friend of mine (who is here for study) deal with the public health system in order to get an abortion.
Real awful story, I really have no idea how she could have managed that if she had not known a local, because I had to almost fight with the institutions to get past the huge bureaucratic wall needed to get a legal abortion.
And, luckily, we had some special help from certain non-profit organizations because of her immigrant status.
